Atthesametime,theearth’sabilitytoabsorbcarbondioxidehasgreatlydecreased.Absorptionofcarbondioxideoccursmainlyinareasofthickforest.Thoseareasarerapidlydisappearingasmoreandmoreforestsarecutdown.

ﻩ Theresultoftheincreaseofcarbondioxideintheatmosphereistheso-called“greenhouseeffect.”Thecarbondioxideactslikeaglassscreen,makingthesun’sheatmoreintense.Therearealreadysignsofglobalwarming,saymanyscientists.Overthenextcentury,averagetemperaturescouldrisebyasmuchasfourdegreescentigrade.

Suchatemperaturechangecouldbedisastrous.Vastareas,suchasthewholecentralUnitedStates,couldbecometohotanddryforagriculture.Becauseofthemeltingofpolarice,thewaterleveloftheoceanswouldriseandmanylowcoastalareaswoulddisappear.Forexample,largepartsoftheNetherlands,Bangladesh,andthestateofFloridawouldbeunderwater.

Inmostoftheindustrializedcountries,therearenowlawsthatlimitcarbondioxidereleasedintotheair.However,inmanyothercountries,suchasIndia,therearenosuchlaws.Thesecountriesplan,infact,todoubleortripletheamountofcoaltheyburn.Theycannotaffordtochangetootherkindsoffuelthatpollutetheairless.Andso,theywillbereleasingevenmorecarbondioxideintotheair.

Thus,lawspassedintheindustrializedcountrieswillhavelittleeffectontheworldwidesituation.Ourplanetislikelytocontinuetowarmupunlesstheless-developedcountriesmakesomechanges,too.

Aglobaldisastercanonlybeavoidedbyaglobalsolution.Theindustrializednationsneedto“thinkglobally.”Theyneedtolookbeyondtheirownbordersattheneedsoftheearthasawhole.Theymustputsomeoftheirwealthandtechnologytoworkinpoorercountries.Thismay
