apartyforhiminmyhomeinNewYork,butnoneofourfamilycouldjoinusbecausetravel

wasdifficultandtheywerestillreckoningwiththesheerterrorthedisasterhadbrought.Icalled

onmyfaithfulfriendstohelpmakeitamerryandfestiveoccasion,ignoringthefactthatmostof

yearlythree-dayregionalretreat,andspendatleastthreetimesayearinworkshops,

discussiongroupsandseminarsatBath.ParentsofMainestudentshaveanattendancerateof

95%inthemanysessions.JoeandMalcolmGauldbothsaychildrentendtodotheirutmost

whentheyseetheirparentsmakingsimilarefforts.Thebiggestobstacleformanyparents,

traditionallywatchedanimalsandplantsforwarningsignsofearthquakes.Forexample,the

Chinesehavenotedthatbeforeanearthquake,hens'behaviorchanges—theyrefusetoenter

theircagesatnight.Theyhavealsonoticedthatsnakescomeoutofthegroundtofreezeto

deathandthatdogsbarkalot,evennormallyquietdogs.BeforetheHanshinearthquakein

Japan,therewerereportsoflargeschoolsoffishswimmingnearthesurfaceofthewater.

Certainbirds,likepigeons,alsoseemedtobeespeciallynoisyandwerereportedtobeflying

inunusualpatternsbeforetheearthquake.Perhapsmostinteresting,andmosteasily

measured,isachemicalchangeingroundwaterbeforeaquake.Experimentaldataseemto

indicatethattheamountofradon(Rn)inthewaterunderthesurfaceoftheEarthwaxesbefore

anearthquake.

Peoplewouldalsoliketobeabletopreventthegreatdestructionofpropertycausedby

earthquakes.Afterall,mostofthepeoplewhodieinearthquakesarekilledbyfalling

buildings.Therefore,buildingstructuresthatcanwithstandthepowerofearthquakesisa

majorconcern.Steelseemstobethebestmaterial,butnotifitisweldedtoformarigid

Keepafireextinguisherhandy.Youshouldhaveoneathome,atwork,andinyourcar(ifyou

haveone).Thefireextinguishershouldbeabletoputoutanytypeoffire.Havetheproper

toolstoturnoffgasandwaterlinesifnecessary.Arrangeanauxiliarycookingandheating

sourcethatcanbeusedoutside.Onealternativeisaportablecampstovewithsmallcansof

familymemberstocommunicateifthereisanearthquake.Ifanearthquakehappensina

largecityzmanyofthetelephonelineswithinthecityarelikelytobedown.Thefewremaining

workinglineswillbebusywiththecallsthatnaturallyoccurafteradisasteranditwillbe

difficulttocallfromonepartofthecitytoanother.Itmight,however,bepossibletocall

outsidethecity.Asensiblearrangementistohaveallofthemembersofthefamilycallto

checkinwithafriendorrelativewholivesmorethanahundredmilesaway.

Althoughscientistsstillcannotpredictearthquakes,theyarelearningagreatdealabouthow
