Introduction

Englishasasecondlanguagehasbecomeacriticalsubjectformost,ifnotall,childrenaroundtheworld.Astheworldbecomesglobalized,manyparentsareoptingtoenrolltheirchildreninEnglishclassesoutsideofschoolhours.So,howcanwedesigneffectivecoursesforyounglearners,giventheirdifferingneeds?Inthisarticle,wewillprovideacomprehensiveoutlineofthecurriculumfortheinformalteachingofEnglishtoprimaryschoolchildren.

Overviewofthecurriculum

Theprimaryobjectivesofthecurriculumforafter-schoolEnglishclassesaretoteachstudentsbasicEnglishvocabulary,grammar,andpronunciation,aswellastoencouragetheircommunicationandcreativity.Thefollowingaretheessentialfocuses:

1.Phonics.

Becauseyounglearners’pronunciationhabitsarenotalreadyfixed,learningphonicsatanearlyagemakesitmucheasierforthemtoacquireaccuratepronunciation.Thecurriculumshouldmovefromletters’soundandtheircombinations,toproperwordpronunciation.

2.Vocabulary.

3.Grammar.

BecauseofthecomplexityofEnglishgrammar,youngchildren,especiallythosewhodonothavealanguage-learningbackground,needtostartwiththebasics.Teachersshouldbeginwithlearningnounsandgraduallyintroduceverbs,adjectives,andpronouns.

4.Communicationskills.

ChildrenatanearlyageareeasilyintimidatedbyEnglishandmayviewspeakingandwritingasintimidating.That’swhythecurriculumshouldincludeactivitiesthatencouragecommunicationincooperation.GamesandactivitiescanalsohelpmakelearningEnglishmoreenjoyableandinteractiveforyounglearners.

5.Creativity.

ArtandcreativityplayanessentialroleingettingchildrenexcitedaboutlearningEnglish.Introducingcreativeactivitiesintothecurriculum,suchasdrawing,storytelling,andpuppetshows,canhelptoincreasechildren’sinterestinthelanguage,whichinturncanhelpthemabsorbthecurriculumcontentmoreeffectively.

Teachingmethods

WefollowthecommunicativeapproachtoEnglishlanguageteaching,whichemphasizestheactiveuseoflanguage,takingreal-lifesituationsintoaccount,andfocusingoncommunicationgoals.Herearesomeexamplesoftechniquesweuse:

Storiesareagreatwaytointroducelanguageincontext,helpingchildrentounderstandhowthelanguageisusedindailylife.Storiescanbeusedtocoverawiderangeoftopics,includinganimals,people,andplaces.

4.Discussionandrole-play.

Discussionandrole-teamworkisagreatwaytoencouragechildrentothinkforthemselves,sharetheirideas,andpracticetheirEnglish,especiallyforhigherlevels.

Assessments

Assessmentisacriticalpartoftheteaching-learningcycle.Itprovidesfeedbacktotheteachers’efficacyandguideseducationaldecisionstakenontheteachingoutcomes.Inafter-schoolEnglishprograms,continuousformalandinformalassessmentsconductedtoidentifychildren’sstrengthsandweaknesses.Theyincludethefollowing:

1.Formativeassessments.

Formativeassessmentsarecontinuousandongoingassessments,exploringthelearningprogressofindividuallearners.Theyincludequizzes,homework,andactivitiescompletedinclass.
