thoughtaboutmyfamily.Itoldmyself,overandover,thatIwasdoingitforthem.

Thattriptookalmostallofmymoney.AllofthemoneyIhadsavedinEcuador(厄

瓜多尔).Theboatmenleftusonabeachinthemiddleofthenight.Welostsightof

thembutwecouldstillheartheirsmallengineacrossthewaves.Sixofusstarted

walkinginlandbuttheotherswaitedforthecontacts,thefriendsoftheboatmen,

astheyhadbeentold.

Wewerelucky:wemetPaulo.Wefoundthetownandwaiteduntilthefirstbar

opened;Iwentinalonewhiletheothershidintheorchardnearby.WhenIasked

foracupofcoffee,theyoungbarman(侍者)lookedatmeandnodded.Hemadethe

coffee,thendisappearedintothebackroom.Coldandwithoutstrength,I

wrappedmyhandsaroundthewarmcup,notcaringwhetherthebarmanhad

calledthepolice,notcaringaboutthenextmoment,justaboutthepresent.

ButthemanhadcalledPaulo,whocameandhelpedus.Paulowasalways

smiling,alwayshappy.HewasfromSeville(塞维利亚),abusycityofmanypeople,

andheknewmanypeople.Paulofoundworkforus.Imadegoodmoneyonthe

farms.Ipickedcabbages,beans,cucumbersandpeas.Ipickedgreatround

yellowsquashes(南瓜)thatsmelledofrichperfumewhenyoubrokethem.The

farmershiredusbytheday,andwerecontent.Thelocalpeoplewouldneverwork

forthewageswearepaid.Butthereweremanyfarms,andmanycropstobe

picked.Wewerewelcomed.

Isharedasmallcleanhouseinthetownwithsevenotherworkers.Wehad

journeyedfromEcuador,Colombia(哥伦比亚),Venezuela(委内瑞拉),even

Argentina(阿根廷).Paulofoundthehouseforus-heknewthelandlordand

arrangedagoodprice.Welivedwell,withenoughfoodandsometimeswine.I

earnedmoreinaweekthanIcouldinthreemonthsbackhomeiftherehadbeen

worktodothere.Isentmostofthemoneythatwaslefttomywifeandparents,

weneededworkpermits.

Iqueuedwithhundredsofotherworkers,waitingfortheapplicationforms.

Wesatonthestonebenchesbeneaththetreesandreadtheforms.Someofthe

otherworkersarefromsmallv川agesandtowns,andcannotreadaswellasIcan,

soIexplainedtothemthatthegovernmentwantedourbirthcertificates,driving

licenses,passportsandmanyotherdocuments.Manyoftheworkershad

perhapsoneortwoofthesedocuments,butmosthadnone.Ihelpedtheothers

completetheformsandwegavethemtotheclerk.Helookedatourdocuments,

stampedtheformsmanytimesandtoldusthattheywouldbesenttoMadrid(马

德里),andourpermitswouldbereturnedintwoorthreemonthsiftheformswere

approved.

Wehadtowait.EvenPauloandhisfriendscouldnothelpus.

Thefirstmonthwasnottoobadasmostofthefarmerscontinuedtouseus;

theircropswererich,waitingtobepicked.ThensomemenfromMadridvisitedall

ofthefarms,andmaybehalfofthefarmersstoppedusingus.Thefarmerstoldus

thattheyweresorry,andweunderstoodthem.

Sothesecondmonthwasworse:onlyafewofthefarmerswoulduseus,and

thosethatdidpayverypoorwages.Wesharedwhatwehad,andateonceaday:

rice,porridge(粥),bread,cheapfoodthatwouldfillourstomachs.Webeganto

stareateachother,andwonderwhichofuswouldfindwork.Therewerefightsin

themorning,betweendifferentgroupsofworkers,whenthefarms'supervisors(管

理人,监工)cametochoosewhowouldworkthatday.Butstillwehadsomehope.

Welostthehouseinthethirdmonth,aswehadnomoneyforrent.Wewere

abletogetsomefoodfromthecharitykitchensaroundthetown,andthechurch,

butwefoundalwaysalongqueueandverylittlefood.Wetookourbagsand

blanketsandsleptinthefields.Thentheweatherbecamecoldandwesleptwhere

wecould,huddledtogether,inoldforgottenbuildingsandalleys(4、巷).

picturesinthecabinetandsomeofthepicturesgowaybacktothe1890's.The

womendressedwithsuchdignityandhadstylebackthen.MyDadwould

lingeraroundhispreciousboxofphotographsandtellmestoriesabouteach

photoandveryone.Itwasoneofthosemomentsthatyoucouldnotreally

appreciatewhenyouwereyoung.ItisonlyafterhewaslonggonethatIcan

lookbackandsaythanksfortakingthetimetoshowmeatinywindowintothe

worldofpeoplewhoreallydidknowhowtolive.

IfoundafewofmyauntsintheirfashionableoutfitsbyanoldCadillac(卡

迪拉克,汽车名)pretendingtodrinkwhisky.Manyofthephotographsweretaken

inConeyIsland(科尼岛)andCapeCod(科德角).Iespeciallylovethephotographs

abeautifulcabinonaprimespotonMousamLake.Iwasnotherewhenthis

photowastakenandithangsinthelivingroomofthecabin.Manyvisitors

commentonitandthinkitisquiteamazingtohaveahouseforsolong.

Thehistoryofthehouseisinterestingtoviewfromphotographs.Around
