RadioandTelevisionBroadcasting:
ItisafirmlyestablishedelementofAmericanlife.TheA.C.NielsenCompany,whichmeasuresaudiencesize,reportedin1992that98.2%ofUShomescontainedatleastonetelevisionandthattheaveragesetisturnedonforsevenhoursperday.Morethan60%oftelevisionviewersreceivetheirnewsfromtheirsetsratherthanfromnewspapers,andoverhalfthatnumbertrusttelevisionmorethanthenewspapers.AccordingtotheRadioAdvertisingBureau,in1990only1%ofUShomeshadnoradio,andtheaveragehouseholdownedatleastfiveradios.Allthreetelevisionnetworksemergedfromexistingradionetworks.TheNationalBroadcastingCompany(NBC)ispartofRCA.Inearly1986,RCAwasacquiredbytheGeneralElectricCompany.TheColumbiaBroadcastingSystem(CBS)wasboughtbytheAmericanexecutiveWilliamS.Paleyin1929,whenitwasasmall,strugglingradionetwork.
