Anewspaper,inabroadsense,isanunboundpublicationissuedatregularintervalsthatseekstoinform,analyze,influence,andentertain.Anewspapercanbepublishedatvariousintervalsbutusuallyappearsweeklyordaily.ThereareseveralnewspapersintheUnitedStatesthathavehugecirculations(suchastheWallStreetJournalandUSATodaywithabout2millioneach),andthereareverysmallspecializednewspapers(forexample,countryweekliesandcollegenewspapers)withcirculationsofafewthousandatmost.

Beforetherecessionof1990-91morethan11500magazinesandperiodicalswerepublishedintheUnitedStates.Three-quartersoftheUSadultpopulationbuysoneormoremagazinesinthecourseofayear,andincreasingly,readerssubscribe,usuallyforayear’sworthofissues,ratherthanbuysingleissuesastheyarepublished.Advertisersboughtanannual$7billioninmagazineadvertisingintheearly1990s,asumrepresentingmorethan5percentoftotaladvertisingexpenditures.(Incontrast,newspapersreceivedover25percent.)

RadioandTelevisionBroadcasting:

ItisafirmlyestablishedelementofAmericanlife.TheA.C.NielsenCompany,whichmeasuresaudiencesize,reportedin1992that98.2%ofUShomescontainedatleastonetelevisionandthattheaveragesetisturnedonforsevenhoursperday.Morethan60%oftelevisionviewersreceivetheirnewsfromtheirsetsratherthanfromnewspapers,andoverhalfthatnumbertrusttelevisionmorethanthenewspapers.AccordingtotheRadioAdvertisingBureau,in1990only1%ofUShomeshadnoradio,andtheaveragehouseholdownedatleastfiveradios.Allthreetelevisionnetworksemergedfromexistingradionetworks.TheNationalBroadcastingCompany(NBC)ispartofRCA.Inearly1986,RCAwasacquiredbytheGeneralElectricCompany.TheColumbiaBroadcastingSystem(CBS)wasboughtbytheAmericanexecutiveWilliamS.Paleyin1929,whenitwasasmall,strugglingradionetwork.
