changeditsnametoImperialCollegeoftheCommerceMinistrythe

nextyear.In1906,thecollegewastakenoveragainbytheMinistry

ofPostsandCommunications,andchangeditsnametoShanghai

IndustrialCollegeoftheMinistryofPostsandCommunications.

WhentheRepublicofChinawasfounded,thecollegewasrunby

theMinistryofCommunications,andchangeditsnameonceagain

toGovernmentInstituteofTechnologyoftheCommunications

Ministry.In1918,theSchoolofManagementwasfoundedinthis

institute,anditbecameoneoftheoldestacademicinstitutes

foundedbytheChinesegovernment.

In1920,theinstitutewascombinedwithsomeothercollegesand

changeditsnametoNanYangCollegeofChiaoTung.In1928,the

namewaschangedtoFrstChiaoTungUniversityofthe

CommunicationsMinistry.In1938,theMinistryofBiucationtook

overtheuniversityanditwasrenamedNationalChiaoTung

University(theseparateinstitutionofNationalChiaoTung

WiththeendoftheChineseQvilWarin1949,thenewCommunist

universitywereincludedintootherfaculties.Atthesametime,

engineeringfacultiesfromotheruniversitieswerebroughttogether

tocreateaspecialistengineeringuniversity.Thenamewaschanged

toShanghaiJiaotongUniversity.

ShanghaiJiaotongUniversityandShanghaiSecondMedical

UniversitywerecombinedonJuly18,2005.

Present

ShanghaiJiaotongUniversityisusuallyregardedasoneofthetwo

bestuniversitiesinShanghai,theotherbeingFudanUniversity.

BothareconsistentlyrankedinthetopfiveuniversitiesinChinain

variouslists.

Theuniversityrecentlyreceivedattentionduetothewell-known

ShanghaiJiaotongUniversityrankingproject,whichisanongoing

large-scaleprojecttoprovideindependentrankingsofuniversities

Xi'anJiaotongUniversity

Xi'anJiaotongUniversityisauniversityinXi'an,China.Itwas

establishedin1896,underthenameNanYangCollege,andbecame

JiaotongUniversityin1921,aftercomingtogetherwithseveral

otherinstitutes.Between1955and1959,theuniversitywassplit

into4partslocatedin4cities.TheXi'ancampusbecameXi'an

JiaotongUniversity.Itisoneofthemostimportantuniversitiesin

TheuniversityisanationalkeyuniversitydirectlyundertheMinistry

ofBjucationanditscampusislocatedintheareaofXizhimenin

BeijingintheHaidianDistrict.TheuniversitysitsnearBeijing

NormalUniversity.

History

TheearliesthistoryofBeijingJiaotongUniversitygoesbacktothe

ShanhaiguanBeiyangRailwaySchoolandNanyangPublicSchool,

bothfoundedbythegovernmentoftheQingin1896.

Onthisbasis,theDepartmentofTelecommunicationoftheQing

governmentfoundedtheBeijingRailwayManagementSchooland

BeijingTelecommunicationSchoolinSeptember1909.In1921,the

twoschoolscametogetherwithtwotechnicalschoolsinShanghai

andTangshantoformJiaotongUniversity,whichhadthree

campusesinBeijing,ShanghaiandTangshan,respectively.The

BeijingcampuswasnamedBeijingSchoolofJiaotongUniversity.

AfterthefoundationofthePeople'sRepublicofChinain1949,the

governmentseparatedtheBeijingcampusfromJiaotongUniversity

andnameditNorthernJiaotongUniversity.MaoZedongappointed

MaoYisheng(norelation),atopexpertonbridgedesign,asthe

presidentoftheuniversity.In1951,MaoZedongmanuallywrote

thenameoftheuniversityinChinesecharactersintheChinese

writingtradition,andthecharacterswrittenassuchweremeantto

beusedonthesignontopofthegateofthecampusandinthe

officialsymboloftheuniversity.AccordingtotheChinesetradition,

itisaspecialhonortogetthehandwrittennameofone'sinstituteor

organizationfromahigh-rankinggovernmentleader.In1981,the

universitystartedtooffermasterandPh.D.programs.

InApril2000,NorthernJiaotongUniversityjoinedtogetherwiththe

BeijingAdvancedBectricPowerTechnicalSchoolandcameunder

thedirectadministrationoftheMinistryofEducation.

InSeptember2003,theuniversitywasrenamedBeijingJiaotong

Universitytomaketherelationshipbetweentheuniversityandthe

citymorepronounced.

Altogether,theuniversityhas22researchinstitutesandresearch

centers,and39laboratorieswhichincludethetransportation
