DoctorsinBoston,Massachusettsstudiedmorethan1,100childrenbetween
theagesoffiveandnine.Themothersofsomeofthechildrensmoked;
theothermothersdidnot.Doctorstestedthechildrenonceayearfor
fiveyearstoseehowfasttheirlungsweregrowing.Thetestmeasured
theamountofairthechildrencouldblowoutoftheirlungsinonesecond.
Childrenshouldbeabletoblowoutmoreaireachyearbecausetheirlung
powerincreasesastheirlungsdevelop.Butthedoctorsfoundthatthe
lungsofthechildrenwhosemotherssmokedhadnotdevelopedasfastas
theyshould.Infacttheywere7%lessdevelopedthanthelungsofchildren
whosemothersdidnotsmoke.Doctorsarenotsurewhenthemothers,smoking
affectedthechildren,slungs.Theysayitcouldhavehappenedbefore
birthbecausethemotherssmokedduringpregnancy,oritcouldhave
happenedlaterwhenthechildrenbreathedsmokefilledairat
home.Doctorsalsoarenotsureifreducedlunggrowthwillaffect
thechildren,soverallhealthwhentheyareadults.Buttheydoknowthat
childrenwhosemotherssmokeddeveloped20%morecolds,influenzaand
otherrespiratoryinfectionsthanotherchildren.Sodoctorsfeelthere
isagreaterdangerthatsuchchildrenwilldevelopseriouslungand
breathingdiseaseslaterinlife.Themostcommonbreathingdiseases
bronchitisandemphysemacausemorethan50,000deathseachyearinthe
UnitedStates.About20%ofthepeoplewhosmokeheavilydevelopthese
breathingproblems.Doctorswillnowtrytolearnifthisismorelikely
tohappentoasmokerifhisorhermothersmoked.Anotherrecentstudy
foundthatsmokershaveagreaterchanceofdevelopinglungcancerif
theirmotherssmoked.Thatstudyfoundthatthedangeroflungcancer
increasedonlyforsonsandnotfordaughters.Anditfoundthatfather's
smokingdidnotaffectaperson'schancesofdevelopinglungcancer.
