NumericalControl(NC)isanymachiningprocessinwhichtheoperationsareexecutedautomaticallyinsequencesasspecifiedbytheprogramthatcontainstheinformationforthetoolmovements.TheNCconceptwasproposedinthelate1940sbyJohnParsonsofTraverseCity,Michigan.Parsonsrecommendedamethodofautomaticmachinecontrolthatwouldguideamillingcuttertoproducea“thru-axiscurve”inordertogeneratesmoothprofilesonworkpieces.

In1949,TheU.S.AirForceawardedParsonsacontracttodevelopanewtypeofmachinetoolthatwouldbeabletospeedupproductionmethods.
