GMcropsaretodayveryrareinEurope,strictlabelinglawsandregulationsareinplaceforfood(DNV=Abarcodes),andpublicopiniontowardsthetechnologyremainslargelynegative.SeveralUKgovernmentreportshaveofferedqualifiedsupportforGMcropsandproduce,thoughtheyarguethattheeconomicbenefitsofthetechnologyarecurrentlysmall.SomeAfricannationshavealsoopposedengineeredcrops,eventothepointofrejectinginternationalfoodaidcontainingthem.

GMproducehasbeentakenupwithfarlessfussintheUS(whereitdoesnothavetobelabeled),India,China,Canada,Argentina,Australiaandelsewhere.HowevercontroversyoveratypeofGMcorn--onlyapprovedforanimalfeed--whichturnedupintacoshellsandotherproductsstirredopinionintheUS.

Thehumanracehasmethodicallyimprovedcropplantsthroughselectivebreedingformanythousandsofyears,butgeneticengineeringallowsthattime-consumingprocesstobeacceleratedandexotictraitsfromunrelatedspeciestobeintroduced.Butnoteveryoneagreesthisrepresentsprogress.

Therootofgeneticengineeringincropsliesinthe1997discoverythatsoilbugAgrobacteriumTumefacienscanbeusedasatooltoinjectpotentiallyusefulforeigngenesintoplants.Withthehelpofthatmicrobe,andothergene-implantationtechnologiessuchasgeneguns,geneticistshavedevelopedamultitudeofnewcroptypes.
