InChaucersCanterburyTales(1392),theNunsPriestsTaleissetSynMarchbiganthrittydayesandtwo.Chaucerprobablymeant32daysafterMarch,i.e.May2,theanniversaryoftheengagementofKingRichardIIofEnglandtoAnneofBohemia,whichtookplacein1381.However,readersapparently3misunderstoodthislinetomeanMarch32,i.e.April1InChaucerstale,thevaincockChauntecleeristrickedbyafo*.

In1509,aFrenchpoetreferredtoapoissond’avril(Aprilfool,literally4Aprilfish),apossiblereferencetotheholiday.[4]In1539,FlemishpoetEduarddeDenewroteofanoblemanwhosenthisservantsonfoolisherrandsonApril1.In1686,JohnAubreyreferredtotheholidayasFoolesholyday,thefirstBritishreference.OnApril1,1698,severalpeopleweretrickedintogoingtotheTowerofLondontoseetheLionswashed.ThenameAprilFoolsechoesthatoftheFeastofFools,aMedievalholidayheldonDecember28.

IntheMiddleAges,NewYearsDaywascelebratedonMarch25inmostEuropeantowns.InsomeareasofFrance,NewYearswasaweek-longholidayendingonApril1.SoitispossiblethatAprilFoolsoriginatedbecausethosewhocelebratedonJanuary1madefunofthosewhocelebratedonotherdates.[8]TheuseofJanuary1asNewYearsDaywascommoninFrancebythemid-si*teenthcentury,andthisdatewasadoptedofficiallyin1564bytheEdictofRoussillon.
