Anewstudyshowsthatthemorepeoplereadanykindoffiction,thebettertheirlanguageskillsare

Asleisurereadingdeclinesasapastimeforyoungeradultsespecially,Martin-Changsaysemphasizing

thefunaspectofitcandrawthembacktonovelswhileatthesametimeimprovingtheirverbalabilities.

Martin-ChangandKozakusedascalecalledthePredictorsofLeisureReading(PoLR)toinvestigate

readingbehavior(motivations,obstacles,attitudesandinterests).TheythenexaminedhowwellthePoLR

predictedthelanguageskillsof200undergraduatestudents,withalldatagatheredatYorkUniversity.The

researchersnotethattheagerangeofthesubjectsinthestudyisofkeyinterest.Inearlyadulthood,reading

becomesself-directedratherthanimposedbyothers,whichmakesthisakeytimetodevelopone'sown

readinghabits.Thispopulationisalsoratherunderstudied,withmostexistingresearchfocusingfarmoreon

Theresearchersadministeredaseriesofmeasuresovertwoseparatehalf-hoursessions.First,the

volunteerscompletedthe48-questionPoLRscalemeasuringvariousreadingfactors.Theywerethengiven

languagetestssimilartothosefoundintheSATandameasureofreadinghabitscalledtheAuthor

RecognitionTest.Thosewhoscoredhigherreadmoreandhavebetterverbalabilitiesthanthosewho

scoredlower.Afteranalyzingthedata,theresearchersconcludedthatreadingenjoyment,positiveattitudes

anddeeplyestablishedinterestspredictedbetterverbalabilitiesandthattheyweremorestrongly

associatedwithexposuretofictionthannon-fiction.

Besideshavingbetterverbalabilities,lifelongreadersareknowntobemoreunderstanding,more
