NovemberastheofficialThanksgivingDay.

Datingback,itisknownthattheCouncilthoughttoappointandset

apartthe29thdayofJune,asadayofSolemnThanksgivingandpraiseto

GodforhisGoodnessandFavour.TheFirstThanksgivingProclamation

washoweveronJune20,1676.ThegoverningcouncilofCharlestown,

Massachusetts,heldameetingtodeterminehowbesttoexpressthanks

forthegoodfortunethathadseentheircommunitysecurelyestablished.

ByunanimousvotetheyinstructedEdwardRawson,theclerk,to

proclaimJune29asadayofthanksgiving,Itisalsoknownthatthe

PilgrimssetgroundatPlymouthRockonDecember11,1620.Theirfirst

winterwasdevastating.Atthebeginningofthefollowingfall,theyhad

lost46oftheoriginal102whosailedontheMayflower.Buttheharvest

Halloween

homeslessinvitingtothesewaywardspirits,theancientCelts(凯尔特

ThistraditionwaslaterbroughttotheNorthAmericancontinentby

withthem,includingoneofthesymbolsmostcommonlyassociatedwith

Halloween—theJack'OLantern.

AccordingtoIrishfolklore,thereoncelivedamannamedJackwhowas

OnenightJacktrickedthedevilintoclimbingatree,andquicklycarved

animageofacrossonthetrunk,trappingthedevil.Jackthenmadehim

hisrevengeuponJack'sdeath.Becauseofhismischievouswaysinlife,

HotCrossbunsarestillmadealloverEnglandaround

Eastertime.Atonetime,bunswithacrossonthemweremade

allthroughLent.TheywerebannedbyOliverCromwelland

broughtbackagainatthetimeoftheRestoration.Foratime

theywereonlyavailableonGoodFridaybutnowtheycanbe

boughtduringthemonthleadinguptoEaster.Wholemealhot

crossbunsarebecomingmorepopulareachyear.

TheEasterEgg

AswiththeEasterBunnyandtheholidayitself,theEasterEgg

predatestheChristianholidayofEaster.Theexchangeofeggsinthe

springtimeisacustomthatwascenturiesoldwhenEasterwasfirst

celebratedbyChristians.

Fromtheearliesttimes,theeggwasasymbolofrebirthinmost

cultures.Eggswereoftenwrappedingoldleafor,ifyouwereapeasant,

coloredbrightlybyboilingthemwiththeleavesorpetalsofcertain

flowers.

Today,childrenhuntcoloredeggsandplacetheminEasterbasketsalong

withthemodemversionofrealEastereggs—thosemadeofplasticor

chocolatecandy.

kindofdancevariesfromareatoarea.Peoplewearingyukata(summer

kimono)gototheneighborhoodshrine,temple,orparkanddancearound
