Whyistheamendmentneeded?Twenty-threecountries—includingSriLankaandMoldova—havesmallergendergapsineducation,politicsandhealththantheUnitedStates,accordingtotheWorldEconomicForum.Weare68thintheworldinwomen'sparticipationinnationallegislatures.Onaverage,awomanworkingfulltimeandyear-roundstillmakesonly77centstoaman'sdollar.Womenhold98percentofthelow-paying"women's"jobsandfewerthan15percentoftheboardseatsatmajorcorporations.Becausetheirprivatepensions—iftheyhavethematall—arelowerandbecauseSocialSecurityputsworkingwomenatadisadvantageandgrantsnocreditforyearsspentathomecaringforchildrenoragingparents,three-quartersoftheelderlyinpovertyarewomen.AndineverystateexceptMontana,womenstillpayhigherratesthansimilarlysituatedmenforalmostallkindsofinsurance.AllthatcouldchangeifweputequalrightsforwomeninourConstitution.

Genderbiasineducationisaninsidiousproblemthatcausesveryfewpeopletostandupandtakenotice.Thevictimsofthisbiashavebeentrainedthroughyearsofschoolingtobesilentandpassive,andarethereforeunwillingtostandupandmakenoiseabouttheunfairtreatmenttheyarereceiving.Girlsandboystodayarereceivingseparateandunequaleducationsduetothegendersocializationthattakesplaceinourschoolsandduetothesexisthiddencurriculumstudentsarefacedwitheveryday.Unlessteachersaremadeawareofthegender-rolesocializationandthebiasedmessagestheyareunintentionallyimpartingtostudentseveryday,anduntilteachersareprovidedwiththemethodsandresourcesnecessarytoeliminategender-biasintheirclassrooms,girlswillcontinuetoreceiveaninequitableeducation.
