Verrazano

Bridge,

which

was

designed

byOthmar

Ammann,

joins

Brooklyn

to

Staten

Island.It

has

a

span

of

4260

feet.

The

bridge

is

so

longthat

the

shape

of

the

earth

had

to

be

taken

intoaccount

by

its

designer.

Two

great

towerssupport

four

huge

cables.

The

towers

are

built

onimmense

underwater

platforms

made

of

steeland

concrete.The

platforms

extend

to

a

depth

of

over

100

feetunder

the

sea.

These

alone

took

sixteen

monthsto

build.

Above

the

surface

of

the

water,

thetowers

rise

to

a

height

of

nearly

700

feet.

Theysupport

the

cables

from

which

the

bridge

hasbeen

suspended.

Each

of

the

four

cables

contains26,108

lengths

of

wire.It

has

been

estimated

that

if

the

bridge

werepacked

with

cars,

it

would

still

only

be

carrying

athird

of

its

total

capacity.

However,

size

andstrength

are

not

the

only

important

things

aboutthis

bridge.

its

immensity,

it

is

bothsimple

and

elegant,

fulfilling

its

designer's
