TheMississippiRiveritselfcompletelychangedcharacter,developingsuddenrapidsandwhirlpools.Severaltimesitchangeditscourse,andonce,accordingtosomeobservers,itactuallyappearedtorunbackwards.FewpeoplewerekilledintheNewMaridearthquakes,probablysimplybecausefewpeoplelivedintheareain1811;buttheseverityoftheearthquakesareshownbythefactthattheshockwavesrangbellsinchurchtowersinCharleston,SouthCarolina,onthecoast.BuildingsshookinNewYorkCity,andclockswerstoppedinWashington,D.C.ScientistsnowknowthatAmerica'stwomajorfaultsareessentiallydifferent.TheSanAndreasisahorizontalboundarybetweentwomajorlandmassesthatareslowlymovinginoppositedirections.Californiaearthquakesresultwhenthemovementofthesetwomassessuddenlylurches(倾斜)forward.

ﻫTheNewMadridfault,ontheotherhand,isaverticalfault;atsomepoints,possiblyhundredsofmillionsofyearsago,rockwaspusheduptowardthesurface,probablybyvolcanoesunderthesurface.Suddenly,thevolcanoescooledandtherockcollapsed,leavinghugecracks.Evennow,therockcontinuestosettledownwards,andsuddensinkingmotionstrigger(触发)earthquakesintheregion.Thefaultitself,alargecrackinthislayerofrock,withdozensofothercracksthatsplitofffromit,extendsfromnortheastArkansasthroughMissouriandintosouthernlllinois.ﻫ

Myanswertothatwouldbe,“Yes.”And“Canyoustateinsomanywordswhatthemeaningis?”Myanswertothatwouldbe,“No.”Thereinliesthedifficulty.Simple-mindedsoulswillneverbesatisfiedwiththeanswertothesecondofthesequestions.Theyalwayswantmusictohaveameaning,andthemoreconcreteitisthebettertheylikeit.Themorethemusicremindsthemofatrain,astorm,afuneral,oranyotherfamiliarconceptionthemoreexpressiveitappearstobetothem.Thispopularideaofmusic’smeaning,stimulatedandabettedbytheusualrunofmusicalcommentator,shouldbediscouragedwhereverandwheneveritismet.Musicexpresses,atdifferentmoments,serenityorexuberance,regretortriumph,furyordelight.Itexpresseseachofthesemoods,andmanyothers,inanumberlessvarietyofsubtleshadingsanddifferences.Itmayevenexpressastateofmeaningforwhichthereexistsnoadequatewordinanylanguage.Inthatcase,musiciansoftenliketosaythatithasonlyapurelymusicalmeaning.Whilelistening,eachlistenerfeelsforhimselfthespecificexpressivequalityofathemeor,similarly,anentirepieceofmusic.Andifitisagreatworkofart,don’texpectittomeanexactlythesamethingtoyoueachtimeyoureturntoit.Themesorpiecesneednotexpressonlyoneemotion,ofcourse.TakesuchathemeasthefirstmainoneoftheNinthSymphony,forexample.Itisclearlymadeupofdifferentelements.Itdoesnotsayonlyonething.Now,perhaps,thereaderwillknowbetterwhatImeanwhenIsaythatmusicdoeshaveanexpressivemeaningbutthatwecannotsayinsomanywordswhatthatmeaningis.Thethirdplaneonwhichmusicexistsisthesheerlymusicalplane.Besidesthepleasurablesoundofmusicandtheexpressivefeelingthatitgivesoff,musicdoesexistintermsofthenotesthemselvesandoftheirmanipulation.Mostlistenersarenotsufficientlyconsciousofthisthirdplane.Itisveryimportantforallofustobecomemorealivetomusiconitssheerlymusicalplane.Afterall,anactualmusicalmaterialisbeingused.Theintelligentlistenermustbepreparedtoincreasehisawarenessofthemusicalmaterialandwhathappenstoit.Hemusthearthemelodies,therhythms,theharmonies,thetonecolorsinamoreconsciousfashion.Butaboveallhemust,inordertofollowthelineofthecomposer’sthought,knowsomethingoftheprinciplesofmusicalform.Listeningtoalloftheseelementsislisteningonthesheerlymusicalplane.Ihavesplitupmechanicallythethreehypothetical,separateplanesonwhichwelistenmerelyforthesakeofgreaterclarity.Actually,weneverlistenononeortheotherofthethreeplanes.Whatwedoistocorrelatethem---listeninginallthreewaysatthesametime.Ittakesnomentaleffort,forwedoitinstinctively.Inasense,theideallistenerisbothinsideandoutsidethemusicatthesamemoment,judgingitandenjoyingit,wishingitwouldgoonewayandwatchingitgoanother---almostlikethecomposeratthemomenthecomposesit;becauseinordertowritehismusic,thecomposermustalsobeinsideandoutsidehismusic,carriedawaybyitandyetcoldlycriticalofit.Asubjectiveattitudeisimpliedinbothcreatingandlisteningtomusic.Whatthelistenershouldstrivefor,thenisamoreactivekindoflistening.WhetheryoulistentoMozartorDukeEllington,youcandeepenyourunderstandingofmusiconlybybeingamoreconsciousandawarelistener--notso
