ernment---followingRonaldRegan’sideathat“ ernmentisnotthesolutiontoourproblem; ernmentistheproblem.“ofcourse,whenthemarketscamecrashingdownin2007,itdecisiveernmentinterventionthatsavedtheday.Despitefact,manyAmericansarestillstronglyopposedto“bigIfAmericanscouldonlyfreethemselvesfromtheirantiernmentdoctrine,theywouldbegintoseethattheU.S.’sproblemsarenotinsoluble.Afewsensiblefederalmeasurescouldputthecountrybackontherightpath.Asimpleconsumptiontaxof,say,5percentwouldsignificantlyreducetheernmentdeficitwithoutdamagingproductivity.AsmallgasolinetaxwouldhelpfreeAmericafromitsdependenceonoilimportsandcreateincentivesforgreenenergydevelopment.Inthesameway,asignificantreductionofwastefulagriculturalsubsidiescouldalsolowerthedeficit.Butinordertocapitalizeonthesecommon-sensesolutions,Americanswillhavetoputasidetheirownattaenttotheideaofsmallerernmentandlessregulation.AmericanpoliticianswillhavetodevelopthecouragetofollowwhatistaughtinallAmericanpublic-policyschools:thattherearegoodtaxesandbadtaxes.Asiancountrieshaveembracedthiswisdom,andhavebuiltsoundlong-termfiscalpoliciesasaresult.Meanwhile,Europehasfallenpreytoadifferentideologicaltrap:thebeliefthatEuropeanernmentswouldalwayshaveinfiniteresourcesandcouldcontinueborrowingasiftherewerenotomorrow.UnliketheAmericans,whofeltthatthemarketsknewbest,theEuropeansfailedtoanticipatehowthemarketswouldreacttotheirendlessborrowing.Today,theEuropeanUnioniscreatinga$580billionfundtowardoffsovereigncollapse.ThiswillbuytheEUtime,butitwillnotsolvethebloc’s
