NetworksFlexiBaseStation(BTS),theentirelifecyclefromproductiontodeploymenttousephasetoendoflifehasbeenconsidered.NokiaNetworkshasminimizedtheenvironmentalimpactoftheFlexiBTSinallfourphases.Atproductionandendoflife,theenvironmentalimpactoftheFlexiBTSisminimizedashazardoussubstancesareavoidedandthetotalamountofrawmaterialneededissignificantlylowerthanthatofconventionalcabinet-typebasestations.Nokia Networksiscommittedtoenergy-efficientmanufacturingandtofullcompliancetoEuropeanUnion’sdirectivesontheRestrictionofHazardousSubstances(RoHS)andWasteElectricalandElectronicEquipment(WEEE).ThecompactsizeandweightoftheFlexiBTSmodules(volumeofroughly25liters,weight<25kg)hasdoublepositiveimpactforthedeployment:First,alllogisticsoftransportingandinstallingtheBTSareoptimized.Smallervehiclescanbeusedormorebasestationstransportedinthesamecontainer.Nocranesareneededforinstallation.Second,owingtothemodular,outdoor-capableandcompactdesign,theFlexiBTScanbedeployedatsitesthatareoptimumfromtheradionetworkplanning,butwereunattainablewithconventionalcabinet-typebasestations.Intotal,NokiaNetworksestimatesthatthelogisticsfootprintisreducedby80%.ysisoftheCO2footprintofthefourphasesrevealedthattheusephaseisdominant.ThereforemeasureshavebeentakentoextendtheusephaseinaCO2neutralway.Nokia Networkscanlookbackonasuccessfultrackrecordinprovidingbasestationcapabilityandcapacitybymeansofsoftwareupgradesratherthanhardwareexchange.TheFlexiBTSprovidesforsoftwareupgradewithintheradiotechnologies,e.g.fromWCDMAtoHSDPAtoHSUPAtoHSPAevolutionorfromGSMtoEDGEevolution,butalsoforsoftwareupgradetoLTE.Indeed,Nokia NetworksistheonlycompanythathasstartedshipmentofLTEcapablehardwarealreadyinthethirdquarterofThetotalCO2footprintofabasestationduringtheusephaseisbasicallydefinedbytheproductofdurationofthetotalusephaseandthepowerconsumption.Seechapter4.2ProductusephaseCO2footprintformoreinformation.LeadingglobalCSPsconfirmthattheFlexiBTSfeaturesbest-in-classpowerconsumptionthatenablesenergysavingsofupto70%forbasestationsites.Thisisachievedbytherevolutionary,modularandoutdoor-capabledesignandthehighlyefficienttechnologywithinthemodules,inparticularintheRFModule,asthepoweramplifierarethepartwiththehighestpowerconsumptionwithinabasestation.Seechapter4.1Productenergyconsumptionformoreinformation.Onbasestationsitelevel,theFlexiBTSenablesfurtherenergysavings,asnoauxiliaryequipmentfortransport(backhaul)orairconditioningisneeded.SiteefficiencycanbefurtherincreasedbyavoidingthefeederlossbetweentheRFModuleandtheantennas.TheFlexiBTSsupportstwotypesoftheso-calledfeederlesssites:Inthedistributedbasestationarchitecture,onlytheRFModule(orRemoteRadioHead)ismountedclosetotheantennaswhiletheSystemModuleisplacedsomewhereelse.ThealternativeschemeistomounttheRFModuleandSystemModuleclosetotheantennas,whichispossibleonlythankstothecompactandoutdoor-capabledesignoftheFlexiBTS.Forruralsiteswithhightowersthisalternativeschemeofferstheadditionalbenefitthatnoadditionalmaterial,e.g.fencesorvandalismprotection,isneededatthebottomofthetower.ProductTypeoftheProduct
