CeeoteeroeroPhotosharing,videocalling,onlinegamingandlivestreamingarejustafewoftheconnectedbehavioursthathavebecomeubiquitousoverthelastdecade.Behindsuchactions,thereisahiddenmatrixofbillionsofpiecesofequipment:servers,cables,antennas,boxes,datacentres,smartphones,personalcomputers,captors,sensorsandcameras.Thisisbecomingthelargestinfrastructureeverbuiltbyhumanity,withtheassociatedenvironmentalimpacts.Themobileindustrymadeasignificantfirststepinaddressingtheseenvironmentalimpactsin2019theBoardoftheGSMA,representingthelargestmobilecompaniesglobally,agreedonanambitiontomovethemobileindustrytonet-zerocarbonemissionsby2050atthelatest.Sincethen,themajorityoftheindustrybyrevenuehascommittedtocarbonreductiontargetsinlinewiththiscommitment.Asmostemissionsofthemobileindustrylieinitssupplychain,itisimportanttoaddresstheissueofresourcere-usewithsuppliersofequipment.Themajorityofemissionsthroughoutthewholemobilesectorvaluechainarefromenergyuseandassociatedcarbonemissions.Mobilenetworkoperatorsandsuppliersaresignificantinvestmentsinrenewableelectricitytoreducetheseimpacts,butcarbonemissionsarenottheonlyimportantmetricand,asanindustry,wemustconsiderrawmaterialextractionandotherenvironmentalpollutantsthataregenerated.
