EvolutionandEthicsThomasHenryHuxley(赫胥黎1825—1895)wasanEnglishbiologistandnaturalist﹙博物学家﹚,knownas"Darwin'sBulldog"forhisadvocacyofCharlesDarwin'stheoryofevolution.

天演论YangreatlymodifiedHuxley’soriginalessaystoadvocatesocialDarwinisminChina.Hebelievesthattheprincipleofevolutionappliestoboththenaturalandhumanworld.

ToYan,human,justasotherorganisms,issubjecttothelawofnaturalselection.Soforanationalitytosurvive,itmustpositivelyadapttothesurroundingenvironmentandtokeepprogressing.ReasonsPersonalbackgroundHistorybackgroundApieceItmaybesafelyassumedthat,twothousandyearsago,beforeCaesarsetfootinsouthernBritain,thewholecountry-sidevisiblefromthewindowsoftheroominwhichIwrite,wasinwhatiscalled"thestateofnature."
