施瓦辛格清华大学《执着于你的梦想》英语演讲稿Someofyourfamiliesmaybedon'tbelieveinyourdreams.Butletmetellyousomething,myyoungfriends.Keepyourdreams.Nomatterwhat,keepyourdreams.Do'ntgiveuponthem,evenwhenyouaretemporarilydefeatedordenied.Keepyourdreams.Well,thankyouverymuch,President.Firstofall,IwanttothankPresidentGuforhavingmehere,andIwanttothankMr.Qizhiforyourkindintroduction.Thankyouverymuch.Itiswonderfultobehereatthisuniversity.Whataspecialplace.Ijustlookedaroundalittlebithere,i'tsagorgeous,gorgeousplace.Iwanttocongratulateyouforgoingtothismagnificentuniversityhere.Now,thelasttimeIwashereinChinawasfiveyearsago,andthenIwaspromotingmymovies.Theyhadamoviefestivalhere,theArnoldSchwarzeneggerMovieFestival.Iremembertheyshowedallmymoviesforaweek—whichwasararity,mayIremindyou—andtheyalsoshowedthemoviesontelevision.ButwealsowereheretopromoteSpecialOlympics,whichisanorganizationthathelpspeoplewithmentaldisabilities,soIwashereforbothreasons.ButthistimeI'mhereasthegovernorofthegreatstateofCalifornia.I'mhererepresentingthepeopleofCalifornia,andwe'rehereonatrademissiontoseehowwecandomorebusinesswithChinaandtohelpeachother,becausebothCaliforniaisaveryfastgrowingstate,andChinaisaveryfastgrowingcountry,andtherearealotofthingsthatwecandoforoneanother.ButIdidn'twanttomisstheopportunitytocomeheretodayandtotalkwiththeyoungpeople;asamatteroffact,tothebrightestyoungpeopleofChina.AndthisiswhyitissogreattobehereattheTsinghuaUniversity,andI'mhonoredthatIwasinvitedhere.Now,IreadalittlebitaboutthehistoryofTsinghua,andIlearnedthatactuallythisschooloriginallypreparedstudentstoattenduniversitiesinAmerica.Now,IalsoknowthatsincetheattackonourWorldTradeCentersithasbecomemoreandmoredifficulttogototheuniversitiesinAmericabecauseyouneedtofilloutallkindsofpaperworknowandyouhavetogetvisas,andit'sverycomplicated,andyouhavetowaitamuchlongerperiodoftimetogooverthere.Butletmetellyou,thingsareimprovingalready.'Iveheardthatit'seasingup,therestrictions,andit'seasiertogetavisa.MyyoungChinesefriends,IwanttotellyouthatincasenoonefromAmericahaseverinvitedyou,letmedothisrightnowpersonally.IwanttowarmlyinviteallofyouheretocometotheUnitedStates,andespeciallytocometoCalifornia,becausethat'sthehappeningplace.Californiaisthebestplace.Pleasecomeandvisitus,wewillwelcomeyou.Iinviteyoualltocomethereandtotravel,tomeettheAmericanpeople,andtocomethereandstudyinouruniversities,andsomedayhopefullyyouwillcomeanddobusinessoverthere,ormaybeyou'llwanttomoveoverthere.Whateveryourgoalis,you'realwayswelcome.America,afterall,let'snotforget,isthelandofopportunity.Andit'snotonlythelandofopportunityforAustrianslikeme,butforChinesepeopleaswell.Rememberthat.Iknowthatbeginningwiththiscentury,Chinaisalsobecomingalandofopportunity.It'safastgrowingplace,andasthestudentsofthisgreatuniversityandthecitizensofarisingChina,Ithinkthatyouhaveagreatfuturealsohereinthiscountry.AndtodayIwanttotalktoyoualittlebitaboutthedreams,aboutthedreamsofyourfuture,anddreamsforthiscountry.Iwanttotalktoyoualittlebitaboutdreams,becauseitseemstomethatI'msomewhatofanexpertindreams,becauseIhadalotofmydreamsbecomeareality.Soletmejustbrieflytellyoumystory,andtellyoualittlebitabouthowIstartedwithmycareer.Ithinkthatthisstorykindofrelatesalittlebitalsotoyou,andalsotoChina.Istartedwaybackasaweightlifter.Ialwayslikedtheideaofliftingweightsandbeingabodybuilder.FromthefirstmomentwhenIgrippedabarbellandhelditaroundthebarandliftedthesteelupovermyhead,Ifeltthisexhilaration,andIknewthenthatthisissomethingthatI'mgoingtodo;thatIwasinlovewiththat,andthisisgoingtobesomethingthatI'mgoingtodo.I'mgoingtopursuethesportofweightliftingandbodybuilding.Now,IrememberthefirstrealworkoutthatIhad.EightmilesawayfrommyhomevillageinAustriatherewasagymnasium,andIrodetothatgymnasiumwithabicycle.AndthereItrainedforhalfanhour,becausetheysaidthatafterhalfanhouryoushouldstopbecauseotherwiseyourbodywillgetreallysore.ButafterhalfanhourIlookedatmybody,andnothinghadhappened.SoIsaid,"I'dbetterworkoutforanotherhalfhour."SoIliftedsomemore.Mystrengthdidn'timprove,Ididn'tseethemusclespopoutoranythinglikethat,soItrainedforanotherhalfanhour.AndthenafteranotherhalfhourItrainedanotherhalfhour,andalltogetherItrainedtwoandahalfhours.Well,letmetellyousomething.Aftertwoandahalfhours—eventhoughtheytoldmethatIshouldn'ttrainthatmuchorIwouldgetreallysore—Ileftthegymnasium,Irodemybicyclehome.AndafterthefirstmileIgotnumb,andIcouldn'tfeelanymorethehandleofthebicycle,andIfelloffthebikeandIfellintotheditchonthesideoftheroad.SoIgotupagainandItrieditagain.Anotherfewyards,Ifelloffthebicycleagain.AndItrieditthree,fourmoretimes,andIjustcouldn'tridemybicyclebecausemybodywassonumbandmylegsfeltlikenoodles.Well,letmetellyousomething.ThenextmorningwhenIgotup,mybodywassosorethatIcould'ntevenliftmyarmstocombmyhair.Ihadtohavemymothercombmyhair,andyouknowhowembarrassingthatis.Butyouknowsomething?Ilearnedaveryimportantlesson,thatpainmeansprogress.Painisprogress.EachtimemymusclesweresorefromaworkoutIknewthattheyweregrowingandtheyweregettingstronger.Ithinkthereisareallifelessoninthat.Aftertwoorthreeyearsofdisciplineanddeterminationandworkingouthard,Iactuallychangedmybody,andIchangedmystrength.Andthattoldmesomething;thatifIcouldchangemybodythatmuch,andifIcouldchangethestrengthofmybodythatmuch,thenIcouldalsochangeanythingelse.Icouldchangemyhabits,Icouldchangemyintelligence,Icouldchangemyattitude,mymind,myfuture,mylife.AndthisisexactlywhatIhavedone.Ithinkthatthatlessonappliestopeople,anditalsoappliestocountries.Youcanchange,Chinacanchange,everyoneintheworldcanchange.Myparents,ofcourse,Ihavetotellyou,didn'tunderstandmydreamsatall.Theywerealwayswondering,theysaid,"Whatishedoing?Whenareyougoingtogetajob,arealjob?Whenareyougoingtomakemoney?"AndallofthosequestionsIgot.Andtheysaid,"Ihopewedidn'traiseabum,someonethatdoesn'tmakemoneyandjustwantstoliveinagymnasiumandthinkabouttheirbodies."Well,Ienduredallofthisnegativethinking,andthemorenegativethethinkinggot,andthemorenegativethequestionsgot,thestrongerandthemorepositiveIbecame,thestrongerIbecameinside.Soofcoursesomeofyourfamiliesmaybethinkthesameway,andthisiswhyI'mmentioningthat.Someofyourfamiliesmaybedon'tbelieveinyourdreams.Butletmetellyousomething,myyoungfriends.Keepyourdreams.Nomatterwhat,keepyourdreams.Don'tgiveuponthem,evenwhenyouaretemporarilydefeatedordenied.Keepyourdreams.IrememberthefirsttimeIwenttotheUnitedStatesandIwascompetinginacompetition,theWorldChampionshipsinBodybuilding.Ilost.Icameinsecond,andIwasdevastated.Iwascrushed.Ifeltlikealoser,amajorloser,letmetellyou.Icried,asamatteroffact,becauseIfeltlikeIdisappointedmyfriendsandIdisappointedmyself.ButthenextdayIgotmyacttogether,Ishiftedgears,andIsaid,"I'mgoingtolearnfromthatlesson.I'mgoingtostayhereinAmerica.I'mnotgoingtogobacktoEurope.I'mgoingtostayinAmericaandI'mgoingtotrainwiththeAmericanchampions,I'mgoingtotraintheAmericanway.I'mgoingtoeattheAmericanfood,I'mgoingtotrainwiththeAmericanmachinesandtheprinciples.Andayearlater,inAmerica,IbecametheWorldChampioninBodybuilding.SoIthinkthisisavery,veryimportantlesson.Andfromthenon,Icontinued.Mycareertookoff,andeverythingthatIwantedtodoIaccomplished.Firstitwastobecomeachampioninbodybuilding.LateronIbecameamoviestar,todoallthegreatmovies,theConanmoviesandtheTerminatormoviesandallthis.ThenIbecamethegovernorofthegreatstateofCalifornia,ofthesixthlargesteconomyintheworld.Allofthishappenedbecauseofmydreams,eventhoughotherpeopletoldmethatthosedreamswerebogusandtheywerecrazy,butIheldontomydreams.Andpeoplewouldalwayssay,nomatterwhat,eveninbodybuildingtheysaidIwouldnevermakeit.Andlateroninthemovies,inHollywoodtheysaidIwouldnotmakeit.Theysaid,"Youwillnevermakeit.YouhaveaGermanaccent.NooneinHollywoodhasevermadeitwithaGermanaccent.Yeah,maybeyoucanplaysomeNazirolesorsomethinglikethat,butyoucannotbecomealeadingstarwithanaccent.Plusyourbody,you'reoverdeveloped,youhaveallthesemuscles.TheydidHerculesmovies20yearsago,that'soutdated.Nowit'sWoodyAllen.WoodyAllenisin,hisbodyisin."Andthosewerethemessages."AndAlPacino,theskinnyguy,heisin.Butnotyourbody,it'stoobig.Andyourname,Schwarzenegger,itwillneverfitonamovieposter.Forgetit.Forgetit,youwillnevermakeit.Gobacktobodybuilding."Well,therestishistory.AfterTerminator3,IbecamethehighestpaidmoviestarinHollywood.Andletmetellyousomething,itcontinuedon.EvenwhenIranforgovernorpeoplesaid,"Arnold,youwillnevermakeit.YouwillneverbecomegovernorofCalifornia.Whatdoyouknowaboutgovernment?"Well,thefactis,IknewexactlyasmuchaboutgovernmentastherestofthepeopleknewinCalifornia,whichisthatgovernmentisoutoftouch,andit'soutofsyncwiththepeople,anditneededashakeup.SoIdidn'tlistentoallthosepeoplethatsaidIwouldnevermakeit.Icontinuedcampaigning,Ilistenedtomydreams,andtherestalsoishistory.Ibecamegovernor.Soalwaysitjustcarriedmeon,thosedreams.Sobodybuildinggavemetheconfidence,moviesgavemethemoney,andpubicserviceandbeingagovernorgavemeapurposelargerthanmyself.Andthatisthebriefstoryofmydreamsandabriefstoryofmyearlylife,andhowmydreamsmademesuccessful.Aperson,ofcourse,shouldnotbestingywiththeirdreams.SoI,ofcourse,don'tjustthinkanddreamaboutmyself,butIalsohavedreamsforyou,anddreamsforChina.Soletmejusttalkalittlebitaboutthat.Chin'aseconomyhasbecomeanengineofhumanprogress,liftingmillionsofpeopleoutofpoverty.ThisisamoralandeconomicgoodforChinaandfortherestoftheworld.IoftenreadthatChina'seconomyislikelytobecomethelargestintheworldoverthenext50years,andIthinkthisisterrific.Thisdoesnotmean,ofcourse,thatAmericawillgetpoorer;itjustmeansthatChinawillgetricher,andtheUnitedStateswillbenefitfromChina'sprogressasmuchastheU.S.benefitedfromtheriseofWesternEuropeafterWorldWarII.SomeinmycountryfearthatChina'sresearchanddevelopmentwillovertakeAmerica's,butIbelievethatAmericaandtheworldwillbenefitfromChina'sscientificandtechnologicaladvances.Ithinkwewillbenefitfromthat.IfChinamakesadvancesinstemcellresearch,therestoftheworldwillbenefitfromthat.IfChinadiscoversanenergybreakthrough,thisisgoodfortherestoftheworld,suchasthebenefitofafreemarket.SomefearthatChinawillbuyupAmericancompanies,butthatfearalsoexistedinthe‘80s,whenAmericafearedthatJapanwasgoingtobuyupAmericancompanies.Sowhat?Itwasjustgood,andtothebenefitofAmerica.WeshouldwelcomeChina'sinvestmentinAmericancompanies,justaswewelcomethebillionsofdollarsthatChinahasinvestedinU.S.treasurybonds.ThisshowsthatChinahasfaithinAmerica,andAmericaninvestmentinChinashowsthatwehavefaithinyou.SoIbelievethatChinaandU.S.economicrelationswillbecomeevencloserintheyearsahead.CertainlyIrealizethatwedonotagreeoneverything,butwhodoes?CertainlyIrealizethatChinahasmajorhurdlestoovercome,butitisnotformetosayhowChinashouldovercomethosehurdlesandachieveitsdreams.ButIcantellyou,however,whathasgivenAmericasuchenergyandstrengthoverthelast200years,andperhapstherearesomeinsightsinthisforChina.Americaisanationthatbelievesinthepoweroftheindividual,andwhattheindividualcanaccomplish,nomatterthecolor,nomatterthereligion,nomattertheethnicbackgroundoftheindividual.Recently,asyouprobablyhaveread,RosaParks,aformerseamstressmarriedtoabarber,marriedtoahairdresser,died,andshelayinhonorintheRotundaoftheU.S.CapitolinWashington.PeoplefromaroundAmericacametosayfarewelltoherandtothankherforchangingourhistoryandforchangingoursociety.Now,whatdidthis92year-oldblackwomandothatdeservedsuchgreathonor?Whatdidshedo?Well,in1955,thedaysofracialsegregation,shehadrefusedtogiveupherseatonthebustoawhiteman.Shehadrefused.Hersimplerefusaltomovetothebackofthebusputintomotioneventsthatledtomycountry'sgreatcivilrightsmovement.Thesmallprotestofawomanthatmaybeweighedlessthan100lbs.broughtdownaracistsystem.Asyoucansee,theindividualcanmakeadifference.Letmetellyouaboutanotherindividual,KenBehring,amillionaireCaliforniabusinessmanwhofoundhispassioningivingwheelchairstopoorandphysicallydisabledpeopleallaroundtheglobe,includingChina.Hesaysthathehasmetpeoplewhohavespentyearsinroomswithnowindow,justlyingthereandstaringupattheceiling,neverseeingtheoutsideworldunlesssomeonewaswillingtopickupthatpersonandtakethemoutsidetoshowthemtheworld.Hesaysthatit'snowondersomanyofthosephysicallydisabledpeopledreamaboutbeingabird.Mr.Behringsaysthatmostofusthinkthatawheelchairwouldbeaconfinement,buttomillionsofpeopleitisnotaconfinement,itisfreedom,freedomtomoveandtogotoschool,freedomtovote,freedomtogetajob,andfreedomforhopeforthefuture.Hehasgivenfreedomandwheelchairsto400,000peoplearoundtheworld.Theindividualcanmakeadifference.Mymother-in-law,EuniceKennedyShriver—Ialwaysliketomentionher,becauseitgetsmeonthegoodsideofher—she,forinstance,startedanorganizationcalledSpecialOlympics.ShestaredSpecialOlympicswhichisforpeoplewithmentaldisabilities.Andofcoursewhenshestartedthatorganizationshewastoldbytheexperts,"Don'tdoit.Youcannottakepeoplewithmentaldisabilitiesoutofmentalinstitutionsandhavethemparticipateinsportsevents.Theywilldrownintheswimmingpools.Theywillkilleachotheroutthere,theywillhurteachother.Don'tdoit."ButEuniceKennedyShriverhadadreamandapassion,andtodaymillionsofpeoplecompeteinSpecialOlympicsaroundtheworld,includingrighthereinChina.ThisiswhyIwasherefiveyearsago.Fiveyearsagoyouhad50,000participantsintheSpecialOlympics.Today,fiveyearslater,youhave500,000participantsinSpecialOlympics.500,000peoplearegettingachancetoparticipateinspo
