9thGradeTECHNOLOGYSTAFFACCEPTABLEUSEPOLICYTheTechnologyMissionofCharlotteMecklenburgPublicSchoolSystemistoensureaccesstoappropriatetechnologyinoureducationalcommunitytosupportandenhancestudentlearning,staffinstruction,schoolcommunicationanddatamanagement.TheCharlotteMecklenburgItistheresponsibilityofallCharlottePOLICIESStaffInternetAccessAllstaffwillhaveaccessthroughtheirclassroom,library/mediacenter,orcomputerlabtothefollowinginformationresources:ElectronicmailcommunicationwithpeopleallovertheworldLibraryCollectionsincludingLibraryofCongressPublicdomainsoftwareandgraphicsWorldWideWebNewsandinformationDiscussiongroupAllstaffwillhaveane-mailaccount.UnacceptableUsesTheuseoftheCMSNetworkisprovidedtofacilitateeducation.Inappropriateusewillresultincancellationofcomputer(internet)privileges.Usersshouldnotexpectprivacyinthecontentsofpersonalfilesonthedistrictsystem.RoutinemaintenanceandmonitoringoftheCMSNetworkmayleadtodiscoverythatastaffmemberhasviolatedthisPolicy,orthelaw.Alle-mailisconsideredpublicrecord.TheSuperintendentofSchools,AssistantSuperintendentofCurriculum,TelecommunicationsTechnologySpecialistordesigneeshallhavetherighttoaccesse-mail.Thefollowingunacceptableusesinclude(butarenotlimitedto):IllegalActivitiesa.Transmissionofcopyrightortradeinformation.b.Transmissionofobsceneorthreateningmaterial.c.StaffshallnotattempttogainunauthorizedaccesstotheCMSNetworkortoanyothercomputersystemthroughtheCMSNetworkorgobeyondauthorizedaccess.Thisincludesattemptingtologinthroughanotherperson'saccountoraccessanotherperson'sfiles.Theseactionsconstitutevandalismandareillegal,evenifonlyforthepurposeof"browsing."d.StaffshallnotusetheCMSNetworkforcommercialorpersonalpurposes,whichincludesoffering,providing,orpurchasingproductsorservicesthroughtheCMSNetwork.SystemSecuritya.Staffareresponsiblefortheirindividualfileaccountandshouldtakeallreasonableprecautiontopreventothersfromaccessingtheirfiles.Undernoconditionsshouldstaffprovidetheirpasswordtoanotherperson.b.Staffshallnotdownloadortransferfileswithoutthepropersoftwarelicense.c.StaffshallnotmakedeliberateattemptstodisrupttheCMScomputersystem,orotherdistrictcomputersystemsandnetworks,nordestroydatabyspreadingcomputervirusesorbyanyothermeans.Theseactionsareillegal.TEACHERE-MAILUSEPOLICY•E-mailwillbeusedasanintegralformofcommunicationwithintheCharlotte•Facultye-mailnameswillbefirstname.lastname@cms.k12.nc.us.(forexample:JaniceDoe):Janice.doe@cms.k12.nc.us•Inmanyschools,teachersareexpectedtochecktheire-mailatthebeginningandendofeachschooldaytokeepcurrentwithnews,meetinginformation,andadministrativeupdatesandpolicieswithinthebuilding.STUDENTINTERNETACCEPTABLEUSEPOLICYWestMecklenburgisfortunatetohaveinternetaccessintheclassroom,mediacenterandcomputerlabs.Inordertopromotetheexpectationofappropriateuseofthismediumforeducationalpurposes,allstudentsarerequiredtohaveasignedcopyoftheCharlotteMecklenburgSchoolsAcceptableUsePolicyonfile.CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURGSCHOOLSBEGINNINGTEACHERSUPPORTPROGRAMApplicationCharlotte-MecklenburgSchoolsprovidesaBeginningTeacherSupportProgram(BTSP)forteachersintheirfirst-thirdyearsofpractice.Theinductionprogramprovidesthestructurethatmaximizesbeginningteacherlearninginthecontextofclassroomexperience.Newteacherslearnfromveteranteachers;schoolsincreasethepossibilityofretainingstrong,well-trainededucators;andmostimportant,studentachievementcanbeelevated.StandardsWestMecklenburg’sinductionprogramsshallmeetthefollowingrequirements:•Anorientationforbeginningteacherandallotherincomingteachersorientationprogramforbeginningteachersandallotherincomingteachers•Assignmentofasupportteamthatshallconsistof,butnotbelimitedto,theacademicfacilitatoramentoranadministratorqualifiedtoevaluateteachers,andaleadteacher.•Opportunitiestoparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentandcommonplanning(i.e.:CriticalFriends,Math,Reading,etc.)Theintentoftheinductionprogramistoprovideteacherswithasystematicstructureofsupportthathelpsthembecomefamiliarwiththeirschoolanddistrictrefinetheirpracticeandbetterunderstandtheirprofessionalresponsibilities.Theprogramisanintegralpartofateacher’sfirstyearofteachingandisthebeginningofateacher’sprofessionaldevelopmentactivities.TheinductionprogramisafundamentalpartoftheWestMecklenburg’sProfessionalDevelopmentPlanaswellastheschoolMentoringMentoringprovidesthebeginningteacherwithaoneononerelationshipwithanexperiencedteacher.Thementoringrelationshipcanbeveryrewarding,bothprofessionallyandpersonally,forthebeginningteacherandthementor.Whilethebeginningteacheracquiressupportandapracticalunderstandingofteachingtroughthementoringrelationship,thementorteacherisabletoreflectuponandimprovehis/herownpracticebysharingexperiencesandexpertise.CoreMentoringActivitiesThementoringrelationshipisshapedbytheactivitiesthatamentorandbeginningteacherparticipateintogether.Aspartofthelicensureregulationsincludeclassroomobservationsandothermentoringactivities.TheseactivitiesshouldhelpthebeginningteacherimproveuponpracticeanddevelopanunderstandingoftheProfessionalStandardsforTeachers.Theactivitiesmayinclude:•Meetingfrequentlyduringtheschoolyeartoplancurriculumandlessons•Observingoneanother’sclassroom•Co-teachingthebeginningteacher’sclass•Analyzingandassessingthebeginningteacher’spracticeinrelationtoevaluationcriteriainordertohelpthebeginningteacherimprove.RolesandResponsibilitiesBeginningTeacher:•Playanactiveroleinthementoringrelationship.Abeginningteachercandothisbyofferingcriticalreflectionsonhis(her)ownpracticeandidentifyingareasinwhichassistanceisneeded.•Seekouthelp.Thebeginningteachermustunderstandthatheorshemustseekoutsupportteammembers,beforthrightincommunicatingclassroomissues,andremainopentofeedbackinordertodevelopasaprofessional.•Observeexperienceteachersatwork.Thebeginningteachershouldadheretoascheduleofobservationsofexperiencedteachers.Thebeginningteachercouldkeepalogtorecordandreflectonthediversityoftheirstyles.•Participateregularlyinprogramsorganizedforbeginningteachers.Theseincludepeersupportgroups,professionaldevelopmentseminarsandbeginningteacherworkshops.Mentor:•Ensureastrongstarttotheyear.Mentorscanhelpbeginningteacherslaunchintoaproductiveyearbymakingsuretheyknowwheretoobtainallneededmaterialsandarefamiliarwithroutinesandschedules.•Provideinstructionalsupport.Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto:oRegularobservationofandconferencingwiththebeginningteacher;oSupportinteachingandlearningstandardsofthestatecurriculumframeworks;oRefiningvariousteachingstrategies;oAddressingissuessuchasclassroommanagementandcommunicatingeffectivelywithparents;oRecognizingandaddressingmultiplelearningstylesandindividualstudentneeds.•Provideprofessionalsupport.Beginningteachersneedtobeinformedofschoolpoliciesandprocedures,particularlyregardingstandardsandproceduresforteacherevaluation.PrincipalsandDirectorsaswellasMentorsshouldbearesourceforinformationonevaluationandprofessionalpractice.•Providepersonalsupport.Mentorscanhelprelievethestressonfirsttimeteachersbyintroducingthemtootherfacultymemberandhelpingthebeginningteachertoputproblemsinperspectivewithsupportandencouragement.•Maintainaconfidentialrelationshipwiththebeginningteacher.Itisimportantthatthebeginningteacherbeabletodiscussproblemsopenlywiththementor,sothattheymaybeaddressedinatimelyandinformedmanner.•Serveasaliaison.Thementorshouldhavetheknowledgeandskillstoreferthebeginningteachertoothersteachersandeducationalresources,sothatthebeginningteacherisexposedtoavarietyofperspectivesandinstructionalpractices.•Serveasaresource.Informthebeginningteacherofopportunitiesandsupportsprovidedbyvariousprofessionalassociations.•Attendmentortraining•AttenddistrictwidescheduledmentormeetingsthroughouttheyearPrincipal:Therolesandresponsibilitiesoftheprincipalmayvarybylevel.Theprincipalmaychoosetosharethefollowingresponsibilitieswiththeassistantprincipal,deansoracademicfacilitator.•Establishaschoolculturethatisbuiltoncollegialityandsupportsprofessionalcollaborationamongnewandveteranteachers.•Ensurereasonableworkingconditionsforthebeginningteacher,whichmightincludeschedulemodifications.Forexample,thebeginningteachercouldbeassignedamoderateteachingload,acourseloadwithrelativelyfewpreparations,fewextra-curricularduties,andaschedulethatiscompatiblewiththementor’s.ResourcesforBeginningTeachersandMentors•Thementorandthebeginningteachercanusethefollowingdocumentstostructuretheirwork:oStatecurriculumframeworksandlocallyalignedcurriculamaterialsoSupportmaterialsforstudentassessments,includingCharlotteMecklenburg’sComprehensiveAssessmentSystem)oSchoolImprovementPlanoDistrictProfessionalDevelopmentPlanGettingStarted BasicsyouneedtoknowfromthedistrictandourschoolPROFESSIONALBEHAVIORS/EXPECTATIONSABSENCEIfyouhavetobeoutforanyreason,youmustcalltheSubstituteSmartFindCallinLine(1-800-309-0661).Youmustcallthislinewhetherasubstituteisrequiredornotforyourabsence.Thislineisavailable24hoursaday.Whenyouknowthatyouwillbeabsent,pleasecallassoonaspossible.Youarealsoexpectedtoprovidelessonplansforthesubstitutewhowillbeassignedtocoveryourclass.(Pleaseseesubstitutesectionofthishandbookforadditionalinformation.)COMMUNICATIONEducatingstudentsisateameffortinvolvingthestudent,parent,teacher,andadministrators.Opencommunicationisthekeysuccess.Parentswillwanttoknowthattheteacheriswillingtotalk,listen,andworkcooperatively.Itisimportanttoestablishcontactasearlyaspossibleintheschoolyear,preferablybeforeaproblemescalates.Itisrecommendedthattheteachereithermakeaphonecallorsendhomealetterofintroductionduringthefirstfewdaysofschool.Frequentcontactwillimprovetheeffectivenessofcommunication.Note:Itisadistrictexpectationthatallphonecallsdirectedtoyourattentionbereturnedwithin24hours.CONFIDENTIALITYAsaprofessional,itisexpectedthatyoumaintainasenseofCONFIDENTIALITYwhendealingwithcolleagues,students,andparents.DRESSAlthoughtheCharlotteMecklenburgSchoolsdoesnothaveaformaldresscode,itisimportanttorememberthatasaneducatoryouarealeaderandrolemodelforchildren.Youshouldmakeappropriatedecisionsinyourattire.[Nojeans,tanktops,sweatsuits,flipflops]E-MAILELECTRONICMAILNearlyallcommunicationisdoneintheformofe-mail.Pleasebesuretocheckyoure-mailatleasttwiceaday.EXTRADUTIESTeacherswillberequiredtoserveinmanycapacities,whichmayincludebusduty,hallduty,extra-curricularactivities,lunchroomduty,preandpostbelldutiesetc.FulfillingdutiessuchastheseenablestheteachertocontributetothetotalsuccessoftheschoolGRADINGPROCEDURESE-SISgradebooksareexpectedtobemaintainedweekly.CharlotteMecklenburgSchoolsoperateswithfournine-weeksgradingperiods.Testingandreportcardcalendarsforthe2011-2012schoolyearareavailableontheCMSwebsite.GradingScaleA 93-100B 85-92C 77-84D 70-76F 00-69INCLEMENTWEATHERSchoolclosingsanddelayedopeningsareannouncedonlocaltelevisionandradiostations.YoumayalsoreceiveaConnectEdcallfromyourhomeschool.LEAVINGTHEROOMUNATTENDEDStudentsarethelegalresponsibilityoftheteacher.Leavingtheclassunattendedconstitutesnegligencethisstatementalsoincludessittingstudentsoutsideoftheclassroomforanyreason.LESSONPLANSLessonPlansarerequired.Planningisthefoundationofagoodlesson.Clear,concise,andsequentialplansarenecessary.Effectiveplanningencouragesonetothinkspecificallybeforeteachingalesson.Itbringstofocusthesequenceandcontinuityoflearningandprovidesonewithapointofreferenceduringteaching.Usethecurriculummapasaguide.PUNCTUALITY/SIGN-INPROCESSAllteachersmustsign-inusingyourfingerprint.Bycontract,allteachersareexpectedtoarriveattheirschoolnolaterthan6:45a.m.ItisalsoaRELIGIOUSHOLIDAYSPleasebeconsiderateofstudents/staffcelebratingreligiousholidays.ThelistofreligiousobservancesisonthecalendarissuedbytheSuperintendent’sofficeatthebeginningoftheschoolyear.Notethedatesandplanclasswork,homework,andtest/quizzesaccordingly.RESPONSIBILITYFORASSESSMENTDATATheTestingAccountabilityFacilitatorwillprovidetrainingforstandardizedtestingeachsemester.Youwillbetrainedontestingsecurity,testingprotocolandhandlingtestingmaterials.TECHNOLOGYAllCMSemployeesarerequiredtoadheretotheAcceptableUsePolicy.AtthebeginningofeachschoolyearallCMSemployeeswillberequiredtoreadtheAcceptableUsePolicyandacceptthetermsofthedistrict-providedaccesstoelectronicinformationservicesandnetworks.Theteachermustbefamiliarwiththepoliciesandregulationsforuseofdistrict-providedInternetaccess.VIDEOPOLICYTeachersareexpectedtocarefullyplanandexerciseprofessionaljudgmentanddiscretioninselectingvideostouseforclassroominstruction.Videosshouldbeusedonalimitedbasisintheclassroom.SeeCMSguidelineforfurtherinformation.STUDENTSPECIFICINFORMATIONExtendedDayTutoringSessionsareheldonTuesdayandThursdayfrom2:30pmto4:30pm.TransportationisprovidedforthesesessionspendingCharlotteMecklenburg(CMS)approval.FieldTrips–ALLfieldtripsmustbeapprovedbyCMS.SeetheBarbaraBabbSeniorAdministrativeSecretarytosecuretheappropriateforms4weeksinadvanceoftheplannedtrip.PersonalizedEducationPlans(PEP)Itisdevelopedbyeducators,parentsandcounselorsandaimedataddressingstudents’individualneedsinordertoimproveacademicperformance.TheP.E.Putilizesbestpracticesineducationthoughactivitiesandlessonsthatincorporatenumerousteachingmethodologiesaimedattargetingacademicweaknessestoensureprogress.Ameetingwiththeparent/guardianwilltakeplacetoexplaintheP.E.Pindetailpriortoimplementationfollowedbyperiodicprocesscheckingthroughouttheyeartoinsurealignmentwiththestudentsneeds.SpecialEducationRequirementsandIEPInformation–AllteachersareresponsibleforreviewingtheIndividualizedEducationPlan(IEP)foreachspecialeducationstudentserved.SeetheSpecialEducationDepartmentformoredetailedinformation.StudentDressCodeEnforcement‐Allcertifiedandclassifiedpersonnelwillberesponsibleforconsistentlyreportingviolationsofthedresscodetothesiteadministratororsecurityassociate.RefertotheCMSstudentdresscodeforadditionalguidelines.TransportingStudents–Teachersmaynottransportstudentstoandfromschoolnorschoolsponsored/approvedactivitiesduetoliabilityconstraints.HealthandWellnessServices•Schoolhealthservices•DepartmentofSocialServicesHEALTHSERVICESEMERGENCYCARDS:ItisimperativethateachstudentandallstaffhaveemergencyinformationonfileintheHealthOffice.Homeroomteachersshouldinstructstudentstotaketheemergencyformhomeforcompletionandreturnitonthenextschoolday.HomeroomteachersshouldNOTacceptaformunlessitiscompletelyfilledout.HomeroomteachersshouldalphabetizetheformsandsendthemtotheOffice(oftheirindividualbuildings)withalistofstudentswhohaveNOTreturnedtheinformation.STUDENTMEDICATION:Allstudentstakingprescribedmedicineduringschoolmustseethenurseandbringinproperdocumentationfromtheirdoctorsothatpropermedicationisdispensedandlegalregulationsaremet.ACCIDENTPROCEDUREFORSTUDENTS:Whenastudentisinjuredonschoolpropertyduringtheschoolday,he/shemustreportto,orbetakento,theHealthOfficeimmediately.Anincidentreportmustbecompletedbythewitnessandsubmittedtotheadministrativeoffice.ACCIDENTPROCEDUREFORSTAFF:AllaccidentsorinjuriesthatoccurintheschoolbuildingorontheschoolgroundsmustbereportedtotheHealthOfficeandtheMAINOFFICEimmediately.AnaccidentreportmustbecompletedbytheinjuredstaffmemberandsenttotheSuperintendentviatheMainOfficewithintwenty-four(24)hours.STUDENTABSENTEEISMDUETOILLNESSORACCIDENT:Allstudentsabsentbecauseofillnessoraccidentforfive(5)consecutivedaysorreturningtoschoolfromhospitalizationshouldseethenurseforreadmissiontoschool.Thisisnecessarytoverifytheabsenceandsothatanydoctor’srecommendationmaybecarriedout.CHILDABUSEANDNEGLECT“Childabuse”istheinfliction,byotherthanaccidentalmeans,ofphysicaloremotionalharmuponachild.“Childneglect”isthefailuretoprovidenecessaryfood,care,clothing,shelter,medicalattentionorappropriatesupervisionforachild.TocomplywiththeMandatoryReportingofChildAbuseAct,Chap.1076,thefollowingprocedurewillbefollowed:Anystaffmemb
