As a result, before and after the fifteenth day of the first month, every family hung red lanterns outside their doors and set off firecrackers and firework

Literally meaning clear (Qing) and bright (Ming), this Chinese festival falls in early spring, on the 106th day after the winter solsti

Legend has it that Jie saved his starving lords life by serving a piece of his own leg. When the lord succeeded in becoming th

13、e ruler of a small principality, he invited his faithful follower to join him. However, Jie declined his invitation, preferring to lead a hermits life with his mother in the mountains. Believing that he could force Jie out by burning the mountain, the lord ordered his men to set the forest on fire.

14、To his consternation, Jie chose to remain where he was and was burnt to death. To commemorate Jie, the lord ordered all fires in every home to be put out on the anniversary of Jies death. Thus began the cold food feast, a day when no food could be cooked since no fire could be lit. The cold food fes

15、tival occurs on the eve of Qing Ming and is often considered as part of the Qing Ming festival. As time passes, the Qing Ming festival replaced the cold food festival. Whatever practice is observed,the basic observation of Qing Ming is to remember ones elders by making a special effort to visit thei

16、r graves, ashes or ancestral tablets. His parents died when

24、he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Zhi Nu (Weaver Maid) fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cowhandfarmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wov

25、e at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back. With the help of celestial cattle, the Cowhand flew to heaven with his son and daughter.

26、At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowyriver appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyaltyto love
