But why were the games held at Olympia?Because Olympic was one of the oldest religious centers in ancient Greece

9、.Since athletic contests were regarded by the ancient Greeks as a way to show their respects to their gods,especially Zeus,they chose Olympia,the site of the major temple,as the venue for the Games.The first Ancient Olympic Games was held in front of the temple of Zeus of Olympia in 776BC.There were

10、 three features of Ancient Olympic Games.First of all,is was a synthetic gathering in Greece.The main purpose was to remember the God.During the gathering there were not only held the competitions,but also scholar, poets,musicians and artists had a chance to show their literary or artistic talent.Be

Second,the Ancient Olympic Games were a part of national culture of Greece.It played an active role in uniting the people from different nations,maintaining unity , decreasing and preventing the war ,which had a close relationship with politics.Finally,because of t

12、he customs and habits,artistic styles and geographical environment of Greece,the Olympic Games had a distinctive feature “naked sports”.So woman were forbidden to watch and take part in the competitions. From the first ancient Olympics in 776 BC to 394 AD,there held 293 Ancient Olympics in the same

13、stadium of Olympia.At first there was only one event in the Ancient Olympic Games dash.It was not 1oom,but 192.27m.Later long distance ,long jump,javelin,discus, wrestle, pentathlon (running race, long jump,javelin,discus and wrestle),boxing,horse racing,cycling race and so on. In 146 BC,however,Rom

14、an Empire invaded Greece,leaving Greek people lost their freedom.The glory of ancient Olympic years came to an end.However,the Games continued to be celebrated until banned in 394 AD by the Roman Emperor for religious reasons. 15、 Games, were held in 776BC in the little town of Olympic in Greece. From then on, for hundreds of years, the Greeks began to hold the celebrations of famous games every four years. Only men were allowed to compete in and watch these early games. Later, women were allowed to watch but they did not co

16、mpete. The modern Olympic Games, which started in Athens in 1896,are the result of the devotion of a French nobleman, Pierre de Coubertin. The games had been held regularly for about 1 200 years. Then, in the year 397 the Olympics were prohibited by the Roman Emperor. It was not u

19、ntil 1896 that the first Olympics of modern times were held in Athens. From then on the games are held every four years regularly. The Olympics have become the worlds most important athletic events and a symbol of sporting friendship of all The Olympic motto is Faster, Higher, Stronger. The Olympic

At least one of those colors appears in the national flag of every country. In 1994,the IOC decided to change the rule of having both the Summer and Winter Games i
