3、要内容：喜福会是典型的复调小说。复调性小说的意义在于在不同的世界开展故事情节、对比人物命运、价值观念以及社会地位的独立的意识。旨在把人物、意识分别放在不同的层面进行分析、比较。在文本中强调对话关系，作者与人物之间、人物与人物之间都存在独立并且对立的对话关系，同时又是一种多样性共识共存的一个统一体。其实，这种关系就是多种声音平等对话的关系。因此复调小说有了矛盾性、对话性、开放性以及未完成性的艺术特点。从不同人物、空间下的不同的生活经历以及人性的特点给人们带来启发，不同于传统的“填鸭式”的写作方式，读者不只是一味的接受，而有了自己的辨别力和思考力。 研究的基本要求：1. 充分查阅并收集相关资料，做

8、nent Chinese American writer Amy Tan, The Joy Luck Club is her best famous work. And it caused strong reaction when it was just published. The Joy Luck Club is a typical polyphonic novel. Its significance lies in the independent consciousness in different world to develop the story and contrast the

9、fate of the characters, value concept and social status with the purpose to analyze and contrast the characters and their consciousness in different level. It emphasizes the relation of dialogues in text, which means a independent and opposite relation of dialogues existing between the author and th

10、e characters, as well as among the characters. Meanwhile, it is also a coexisting unity of diversity of consensus. In fact, this relation is an equal dialogue of variety of voices. Therefore, the polyphonic novel has the features of contradiction, dialogue, openness and infiniteness. Polyphonic nove

11、ls inspire people to learn lessons from different life experience and human nature of different character in different space, which are different from the traditional “spoon-fed” writing. Readers no longer passively accept, but have their own ability to discern and think. Dialogue is the cornerstone

12、 of the polyphonic novel theory. “All else is means, dialogue is the end.” Each individual existence is independent and endowed with the unique value, which is the prerequisite of the interpersonally equal dialogue. Based on Bakhtins exposition, the essential artistic features of a polyphonic novel

13、can be summed up as the dialogicality as well as the unfinalizability. Bakhtin have brought significant innovation in a new way to express the novel. This theory greatly enriched the method of literary criticism. These studies have deepened peoples understanding of it and broadened their vision. How

14、ever, this thesis attempts to throw a new light on the understanding of The Joy Luck Club by exploring it as a polyphonic novel. Literature reviewPolyphony is basically “a new theory of authorial point of view” propounded by Bakhtin (Clark and Holquist. Mikhail Bakhtin 3). Polyphony literally means

15、“multi-voicedness” (Clark and Holquist. Mikhail Bakhtin 279). As Bakhtin states: “The objective complexity, contradcitoriness and multi- vociedness of Dostoyevsky's epoch his deep biographical and inner participation in the objective multi-leveledness of life Prepared the soil in which Dostoyevs

16、ky's polyphonic novel was to grow”(Bakhtin, Mikhail. Problems of Dostoyevskys Poetics 30- 31).According to David Lodge, a polyphonic novel is a “novel in which a variety of conflicting ideological positions are given a voice and set in play both between and within individual speaking subjects, w

17、ithout being placed and judged by an authoritative authorial voice”(Lodge, David. After Bakhtin: Essays on Fiction and Criticism 86). The multi-voiced nature of fiction allows different ideological perspectives to enter the novel. Bakhtins theory is sometimes called “dialogics”. Dialogics or dialogi

18、sm, according to Bakhtin, means the process by which meaning is evolved out of interactions among the author, the work and the reader listener. These elements are in turn influenced by the context in which they are placed, i.e. by the social and political forces influencing them. This is what Bakhti

21、vskys Poetics 18) “Polyphony” and “dialogue” to be interchangeable terms and that a polyphonic text should be necessarily use dialogic and vice versa. Bakhtin explains novelistic polyphony in a rather roundabout way. He at first shows the importance of Dostoyevsky as a polyphonic writer. He sees pol

22、yphony to be a special characteristic of the novels of Dostoyevsky. He writes: “We consider Dostoyevsky one of the greatest innovators in the realm of artistic form. He created, in our opinion, a completely new type of artistic thinking, which we have provisionally called polyphonic”(Bakhtin, Mikhai

23、l. Problems of Dostoyevskys Poetics 3). Dostoyevsky according to him originated “a fundamentally new novelistic genre” and succeeded in “constructing a polyphonic world and destroying the established forms of the fundamentally monologic (homophonic) European novel” (Bakhtin, Mikhail. Problems of Dos

24、toyevskys Poetics 8) 1. He also clarifies that Dostoevsky is not an “isolated instance in the history of the novel, nor does it mean that polyphonic novel which he created was without predecessors” (Bakhtin, Mikhail. Problems of Dostoyevskys Poetics 44). Thus Bakhtin asserts the position that all no

25、vels are polyphonic and that Dostoyevskys polyphonic novel had predecessors in the folkloric genres of antiquity. What he does in eulogizing Dostoyevsky to be a polyphonic writer is only to show the readers “what is unique to him,” that is, the “Dostoyevsky in Dostoyevsky and thus to give Dostoyevsk

26、ys novels a unique place in the milieu of novelistic polyphony” (Bakhtin, Mikhail. Problems of Dostoyevskys Poetics 44). This is the position asserted in this dissertation. In analyzing the traits of polyphony in Ulysses, a representative novel of its age that has exerted tremendous influence on lat

27、er novelists, we are pointing to the twin facts that Joyce is a successor of the polyphonic writers as well as that fiction as a genre belongs to the domain of polyphonic narration. Bakhtin often associates the name of Dostoyevsky with polyphonic writing and Dostoyevskys novels have now become a syn

28、onym for the polyphonic novel. The “Dostoyevskian” novel, therefore, for all practical purposes means the polyphonic novel. Key points The term “polyphonic novel” indicates a huge and complicated system of literary critical theory and this paper is based on some of its basic ideas. Certainly, it is

29、impossible to exhaust all the viewpoints of the polyphonic novel theory, this introduction will be limited to some aspects of Bakhtinian polyphonic novel theory that are necessary for the further discussion of this paper.
