20、degreeglobalseasurfacetemperatureclimatologywasconstructedfromtwointermediateclimatologies:the2-degreeSSTclimatologypresently,usedatNMCanda1-degreeSSTclimatologyderivedfromthenewanalysis.The2-degreeSSTclimatologyuseda30-year1950-79baseperiodbetweenroughly40Sand60Nbasedoninsitu(shipandbuoy)SSTdatasup

21、plementedby4years(1982-85)ofsatelliteSSTretrievals.The1-degreeSSTclimatologywasbasedonmonthlyanalysesusinginsituSSTdata,satelliteSSTretrievals,andsea-icecoveragedataovera12-yearperiod(1982-93).Thefinalclimatologywascombinedfromthesetwoproductssothata1-degreeresolutionwasmaintainedandthebaseperiodwas

22、adjustedtothe1950-79periodwhereverpossible(approximately40Sand60N).Comparedtothe2-degreeclimatology,the1-degreeclimatologyresolvesequatorialupwellingandfrontsmuchbetter.Thisleadstoabettermatchingofthescalesofthenewanalysisandclimatology.Inaddition,becausethemagnitudesoflarge-scalefeaturesareconsiste

23、ntlymaintainedinboththeolder2-degreeandthenew1-degreeclimatologies,climatemonitoringoflarge-scaleanomalieswillbeminimallyaffectedbytheanalysischange.Theuseof12yearsofsatelliteSSTretrievalsmakesthisnewclimatologyusefulformanyadditionalpurposesbecauseitseffectiveresolutionactuallyapproaches1-degreeeverywhereovertheglobaloceanandbecausethemeanSSTvaluesaremoreaccuratesouthof40Sthanclimatologieswithoutthesedata.Reynolds,R.W.andT.M.Smith,1994:Ahighr
