7、Less on 4 An excit ing trip 激动人心的旅行I have just received a letter from my brother, Tim. He is in Australia. He has been there for six mon ths. Tim is an engin eer. He is work ing for a big firm and he has already visited a great number of different places in Australia. He has just bought an Australia
8、n car and has gone to Alice Springs, a small town in the centre of Australia. He will soon visit Darwin. From there, he will fly to Perth.My brother has never been abroad before, so he is finding this trip very exciting.Less on 5 No wrong nu mbers 无错号之虞Mr James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now
9、he has just bought ano ther garage in Pin hurst. Pin hurst is on ly five miles from Silbury, but Mr Scott cannot get a teleph one for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pige ons. Yesterday, a pige on carried the first message from Pin hurst to Silbury. The bird covered the dista nce in thr
10、eeminutes. Up to now, Mr Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other urge nt messages from one garage to the other. I n this way, he has beg un his own p'ivate teleph one.Lesson 6 Percy Buttons 珀西巴顿斯I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Yesterday a beggar kno cked at
11、my door.He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer. I n retur n for this, the beggar stood on his head and sang son gs. I gave him a meal. He ate the food and drank the beer. Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket and went away. Later a n eighbour told me about him.Everybody knows him. His name

He calls at every house in the street once a month and always asks for a meal and a glass of beer.Lesson 7 Too late 为时太晚The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expect ing a valuable parcel of diam ond from South Africa. A few hours earl
13、ier, some one had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diam on ds. When the pla ne arrived, some of the detectives were wait ing in side the main buildi ng while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two
14、 detectives were keep ing guard at the door, two others ope ned the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!Less on 8 The best and the worst 最好的和最差的Joe San ders has the most beautiful garde n in our tow n. Nearly everybody en ters for 'The Nicest Garden Competi
15、tion' each year, but Joe wins every time. Bill Frith's garden is larger than Joe's. Bill works harder than Joe and grows more flowers and vegetables, but Joe's garde n is more in teresti ng. He has made n eat paths and has built a woode n bridge over a pool. I like garde ns too, but
16、I do not like hard work. Every year I en ter for the garden competition too, and I always win a little prize for the worst garden in the tow n!Less on 9 A cold welcome 冷遇On Wedn esday eve ning, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered un der
17、the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but no thi ng happe ned. Sudde nly some one shouted, 'It's two minu tes past twelve! The clo
18、ck has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the NewYear. At that mome nt everybody bega n to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for jazz不适于演奏爵士乐We have an old musical in strume nt. It is called a clavichord翼琴).It was made inGermany in 1681. Our clavichord is ke
19、pt in the living-room. It has belong to our fami y for a long time. The in strume nt was bought by my gran dfather many years ago.Recently it was damaged by a visitor. She tried to play jazz on it! She struck the keys too hard and two of the stri ngs were broke n. My father was shocked. Now we are n
20、et allowed to touch it. It is being repaired by a friend of my father's.Less on 11 One good tur n deserves ano ther 礼尚往来I was hav ing dinner at a restaura nt whe n Harry Steele came in. Harry worked in a lawyer's office years ago, but he is now work ing at a bank. He gets a good salary, but
21、he always borrows money from his frie nds and n ever pays it back. Harry saw me and came and sat at the same table. He has never borrowed money from me. While he was eating,I asked him to lend me &2. To my surprise, he gave me the money immediately. 'I have n ever borrowed any money from you
22、,' Harry said, 'so now you can pay for my dinn er!'Lesson 12 Goodbye and good luck 再见,一路顺风Our ncighbour, Captain Charles Alison, will sail from Portsmouth tomorrow. We shalmeet him at the harbour early in the morning. He will be in his small boat,Topsail.Tapsail is a famous little boat.
23、It has sailed across the Atlantic many times.Capta in Alis on will set out at eight o'clock so we shall have ple nty of time. We shall see his boat and the n we shall say good-bye to him. He will be away for two mon ths. We are very proud of him. He will take part in an important race across the
24、 Atlantic.Lesson 13 The Gree nwood Boys 绿林少年The Gree nwood Boys are a group of popular sin gers. At prese nt, they are visit ing all parts of the country. They will be arriving here tomorrow. They will be coming by train and most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at the station. To
25、morrow evening they will be singing at the Workers' Club. The Greenwood Boys will be staying for five days. During this time, they will give five performances. As usual, the police will have a difficult time. They will be trying to keep order. It is always the same on these occasi ons.Lesson 14
26、Do you speak En glish?你会讲英语吗?I had an amus ing experie nee last year.After I had left a small village in the south ofFran ce, I drove on to the n ext tow n. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in Fr
27、ench and he replied in the same Ian guage. Apart from a few words, I do not knew any French at all. Neither of us spoke duri ng the journ ey. I had n early reached the tow n, whe n the young man sudde nly said, very slowly, 'Do you speak En glish?' As I soon learnt, he was En glish himself!L
28、ess on 15 Good n ews 佳音The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very n ervous whe n. I went into his office. He did n ot look up from his desk whe n I en tered. After I had sat dow n, he said that bus in ess was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such la
29、rge salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come.'Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice. 'Don't interrupt,' he Said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra &100 a year!Lesson 16 A polite request 彬彬有礼的要求If you park your car in the wrong
30、 place, a traffic policeman will soon find it. You willbe very lucky if he lets you go without a ticket. However, this does not always happen.Traffic police are sometimes very polite. During a holiday in Sweden, I found this nole on my car:' Sir, we welcome you to our city. This is a "No Pa

38、hi ng anything. But this does not worry me. Some fisherme n are uni ucky. In stead of catch ing fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am eve n less lucky. I n ever catch anything-not eve n old boots. After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You mus
