2、milies, and friends who encouraged and supported us as we worked towards our graduate degrees. i wouldespecially like to tha nk my own family, eight members of which are in the audie neetoday. i would also like to tha nk all of the departme nt secretaries and other engin eering school staff members

3、who always seemed to be there whe n con fused graduatestude nts n eeded help. and fin ally i would like to tha nk the washi ngton uni versityfaculty members who served as our in structors, men tors, and frien ds.as i think back on the seven-and-a-half years i spent at washington university, mymi nd

4、is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrati ng, and eve n humorous.toni ght i would like to share with you some of the memories that i take with me asi leave washi ngton uni versity.i take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of lopata hall - the roomat the end of the hallway that

5、was too hot in summer, too cold in win ter, and always toofar away from the wome ns restroom. the window was my offices best feature. were itnot for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view ofthe arch. but in stead i got a view of the roof of the physics build in g

6、. i also had a viewof one corner of the roof of urbauer hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch forvarious species of birds who alter nately won perch ing rights for several weeks at a海量资料分享time. and i had a nice view of the physics courtyard, no teworthy as a good place forwatch ing people run th

7、eir dogs. its amaz ing how fasc in ati ng these views becamethe Ion ger i worked on my dissertati on. but my favorite view was of a n earby oak tree.from my fourth-floor van tage point i had a rather in timate view of the tree and thevarious birds and squirrels that in habit it. occasi on ally a bir

8、d would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startli ng both of us.i take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while i wasa graduate stude nt. anne joh nstone, the only female professor from whom i took acourse in the engineering school, and bob durr, a polit

9、ical science professor and amember of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. i rememberthem fon dly.i take with me the memory of failing the first exam in one of the firstengin eeri ng courses i took as an un dergraduate. i remember thi nking the course wasjust too hard for

10、me and that i would n ever be able to pass it. so i went to talk to theprofessor, ready to drop the class. and he told me not to give up, he told me i couldsucceed in his class. for reas ons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he saidhe had faith in me. and after that my grades in the clas

11、s slowly improved, and i endedthe semester with an a on the final exam. i remember how motivational it was to knowthat some one believed in me.i take with me memories of the midwestern friendliness that so surprised mewhen i arrived in st. louis 8 years ago. since moving to new jersey, i am sad to s

12、ay, nobody has asked me where i went to high school.i take with me the memory of the short-lived computer scie nee graduate stude ntsocial committee lun ches. the idea was that groups of cs grad stude nts were海量资料分享supposed to take tur ns cook ing a mon thly lun ch. but after one grad stude nt prepa

13、reda pot of chicke n that pois oned almost the en tire cs grad stude nt populati on and oneuni ucky faculty member in one fell swoop, there was nt much en thusiasm for hav ingmore lun ches.i take with me the memory of a more successful graduate stude nt effort, theestablishme nt of the associati on

14、of graduate engin eeri ng stude nts, known as ages.started by a han dful of engin eeri ng graduate stude nts because we n eeded a way toelect represe ntatives to a campus-wide graduate stude nt gover nment, ages soongrew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has bee

15、n instrume ntal in address ing a nu mber of engin eeri ng graduate stude nt concerns.i take with me the memory of an engineering and policy department that once hadflourishi ng programs for full-time un dergraduate, masters, and doctoral stude nts.i take with me memories of the 1992 u.s. presidentia

16、l debate. eager to getinvolved in all the excitement i volunteered to help wherever needed. i remember spending several days in the makeshift debate hq giving out-of-tow n reporters directi onsto the athletic complex. i remember being thrilled to get assig ned the job of collect ingfilm from the pho

17、tographers in the debate hall duri ng the debate. and i remember thedisappo in tme nt of draw ing the shortest straw among the stude nt volun teers andbeing the one who had to take the film out of the debate hall and down to the dark roomfive minutes into the debate - with no chance to re-enter the

18、debate hall after i left.i take with me memories of uni versity holidays which n ever seemed to apply tograduate stude nts. i remember spe nding many a fall break and preside nts dayholiday with my fellow grad stude nts in all day meet ings brought to us by the computerscie nee departme nt.海量资料分享i t

19、ake with me memories of exams that seemed desig ned more to test en duranee and persevera nee tha n mastery of the subject matter. i man aged to escape taking any classes that featured infam ous 24-hour-take-home exams, but remember thesufferi ng of my less fortun ate colleagues. and what doctoral s

20、tude nt could forget thepain and sufferi ng one must en dure to survive the qualify ing exams?i take with me the memory of the seve n-minute rule, which always seemed to bean acceptable excuse for being ten minu tes late for anything on campus, but whichdoes nt seem to apply any where else i go.i ta

21、ke with me the memory of friday after noon acm happy hours, known not forkegs of beer, but rather bowls of rain bow sherbet pun ch. over the several years that iatte nded these happy hours they enjo yed vary ing degrees of popularity, ofte nproporti onal to the quality and qua ntity of the accompa n

22、ying refreshme nts - but therewas always the rain bow sherbert pun ch.i take with me memories of purple parking permits, the west campus shuttle,check ing my pen daflex, over-due library books, trying to print from cec, l un ches ondelmar, friends who slept in their offices, miniature golf in lopata hall, the greenway talk,division iii basketball, and trying to convince dean russel that yet another engin eeri ngschool rule should be cha nged.fin ally, i would like to con elude, not with a memory, but with some advice. whatwou
