2、ee came as a great beacon light of hope to millio ns of n egro slaves who had beenseared in the flames of withering injustice. it came as a joyousdaybreak to end the long ni ght of their captivity.but one hundred years later, the negro still is notfree. one hun dred years later, the life of the n eg

3、ro is still sadlycrippled by the man acles of segregati on and the cha ins ofdiscrim in ati on. one hun dred years later, the n egro lives ona Ion ely isla nd of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean ofmaterial prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is stilllanguished in the corners of americ

4、an society and findshimself an exile in his own land. and so weve come heretoday to dramatize a shameful con diti on.in a sense weve come to our n ati ons capital tocash a check. whe n the architects of our republic wrote themagnificent words of the constitution and the declaration ofindependence, t

5、hey were signing a promissory note to whichevery american was to fall heir. this note was a promise thatall men, yes, black men as well as white men, would beguaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and thepursuit of happiness. it is obvious today that america hasdefaulted on this promisso

6、ry note, insofar as her citizens ofcolor are concerned. instead of honoring this sacredobligation, america has given the negro people a bad check, acheck which has come back marked insufficient funds.but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice isbankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are in

7、sufficient fundsin the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. and so, wevecome to cash this check, a check that will give us upondemand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.we have also come to this hallowed spot to remindamerica of the fierce urgency of now. this is no time to eng

8、agein the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug ofgradualism. now is the time to make real the promises ofdemocracy. now is the time to rise from the dark and desolatevalley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now isthe time to lift our nation from the quicksands o

9、f racial injusticeto the solid rock of brotherhood. now is the time to makejustice a reality for all of gods children.from every mountainside, let freedom ring andwhen this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we letit ring from every village and every hamlet, from every stateand every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all ofgods children, black men and white men, jews and gentiles,protestants and catho
