Therere about 40,000 rocks, most of them with six sides. It goes for several hun dred metres on the easter n coast of Norther
3、n Irela nd. Lin gli ng: That sounds great, though I thi nk Victoria Falls in Africa are eve n more fan tastic. Theyre about l, 700 metres wide and 100 metres high. You can hear the loud noise a few kilometers away. Betty: Wow, thats huge! But in my opinion, man-made won ders are more excit ing tha n
4、 n atural on es. Look at the Terracotta Army. Its more tha n 2.000 years old. Daming: I agree with you, Betty. And I think the Three Gorges Dam is fantastic too. Its about 2,300 metres Ion g, 185 metres high and 15 metres wide at the top. It produces electricity for millions of people in China. Bett
5、y: Now, whod like to call first? Unit 2 The Grand Canyon was not just big. A great won der of the n atural worldWhen I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east - the sky was beco ming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There wa
6、s no thi ng to see, but I knew it was there. After about a mile, a stra nger appeared beside the path. Am I going the right way? I asked. He knew where I was going. Yes, ” he replied, “you II get there in five minutes Fin ally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was sile nt
7、 and there was no sig n of it. Sudde nly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose beh ind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and dow n to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world - the Grand Canyon. I looked dow n to the Colorado
8、River, a silver stream n early one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildi ngs in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fiftee n miles away, maybe more. Fin ally, I l
9、ooked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more tha n 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself. Is the Grand Canyon the greatest won der of the n atural world? I certa inly kno
10、w the an swer. What do you think? Module 2 Public Holidays Unit 1 My family always go somewhere interesting as soon as the holiday begins. Tony: The First of October is Chinas National Day, isn t it, Lingling? Lingling: Yes. The Peoples Republic of China was founded on 1st October 1949. People have
11、celebrated the National Day since then. There are flowers and national flags everywhere, and we have a three-day holiday. Tony: Do you have any pla ns for the holiday this year? Lin gli ng: Yes. My pare nts and I are going to visit some frie nds in Shandong Province and will stay there until the end
12、 of the holiday. While were staying with our frien ds, were going to spe nd one day in Qin gdao. When is your n atio nal day, Betty? Betty: Our n ati onal day is called In depe ndence Day. Its on 4th July. Weve celebrated it since 1777. Its a public holiday, but we only have one day off. On that day
13、, there are all kinds of holiday activities. Its the start of the vacati on seas on and most people take a vacati on sometime in July or August. Lin gli ng: And is there anything special on that day? Betty: Well, you can see America n flags everywhere. We usually have a pic nic somewhere ni ce. Kids
14、 have great fun. We also watch bands play music in public parks. Daming: Do you have a n ati onal day in the UK, Tony? Tony: No, we dont - we celebrate Christmas with a two-day holiday. And my family always go somewhere in terest ing as soon as the holiday beg ins. Unit 2 We have celebrated the fest
15、ival since the first pioneers arrived in America. Tha nksgi ving Thanksgiving is an American festival. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for a special dinner among family and friends. People make short speeches and give tha nks for their food. We have celebrated the f
16、estival since the first pion eers from En gla nd arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they Ian ded, their first win ter was worse tha n any En glish win ter. The local people, the Native America ns, taught the pion
17、eers how to grow corn. The follow ing year they celebrated together by eat ing a dinner of the new food. We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is always the most crowded room in our house because we all help prepare the food. We lay the table, and the n before
18、we beg in dinner, my father gives tha nks for the food, so we remember why we celebrate the festival. We usually eat too much, but it is only once a year! We ofte n talk a lot and tell stories after dinner as well. Whe n it is all over, every one helps wash the dishes. The festival is a very busy ti
19、me for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. During the festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macys Than ksgi ving Day Parade. The parade goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macys store. Tha
20、nksgiving is the start of the Christmas seas on, and we start shopp ing for prese nts. Football is also importa nt at Than ksgi ving, with many teams play ing games. Like many America ns, we usually watch the games on televisi on and enjoy ourselves very much. Module 3 Heroes Unit 1 She trained hard
21、, so she became a great player later. Ms Li: Daming, who is your hero? Who have you chose n to tell us about? Daming: Deng Yap ing! Shes my hero because shes one of the best table tennis players in the world and I love playing table tennis. Ms Li: Tell us about her. Daming: Well, she started playing
22、 table tennis when she was five. She trained hard, so she became a great player later. Ms Li: And what competiti ons has she won? Daming: Shes won many world competitions, including four gold medals in the Olympics. She stopped play ing whe n she was twe nty- four. Ms Li: What did she do after that?
23、 Darning: She began to study at Tsinghua University in Beijing and then attended uni versity abroad. Her En glish was nt good eno ugh whe n she bega n. Once aga in she worked hard, and seve n years later, she completed her doctors degree at Cambridge Uni versity. Whatever she does, she n ever gives
24、up! Ms Li: Thats amaz ing! Daming: Yes. Deng says that she isnt cleverer tha n anyone else, but she has a very strong will. Ms Li: I see. Well. I think shes a good stude nt as well as a good player. Daming: Yes, and she helped make the Beijing Olympics a victory for world sport. Shes simply the best
25、! Ms Li: Shes a true hero. Unit 2 There were few doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own. My hero - Dr Norma n Beth une By Wang Lin gli ng Norman Bethune is one of the most famous heroes in China. He was a Canadian doctor. He came to China to help the Chinese people and died for them. Norma
26、n Beth une was born in 1890. He became a doctor in 1916 and went to Spai n in 1936 to treat the wounded soldiers during the war there. He soon realised that many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly eno ugh. Dr Beth une developed new ways of tak ing care of the sick. He inv
27、en ted special medical tools to useoutside hospitals and close to the fighting areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more quickly. His inven ti ons saved many lives. In 1938, Dr Bethu ne came to China and helped treat the woun ded duri ng the An ti- Japanese War. At that time, there were few
28、 doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own. His experie nee of treati ng people in Spain was useful in China. He developed training courses for local doctors and nu rses, and wrote books so that they could lear n about how he treated the sick. Dr Bethune often worked very hard without resting
29、or taking care of himself. Once, he eve n worked for sixty-nine hours without stopp ing and man aged to save over a hun dred lives. One day in 1939, he cut his fin ger duri ng an operati on, but he con ti nued his work without treat ing it. In the end, he died of his wound. Dr Bethunes work for the
30、Chinese people made him a hero in China. There are many books and films about him, and he is still remembered in both China and Can ada today. Module 4 Home alone Unit 1 I can look after myself, although it won t be easy for me Mum: Now, whats our train nu mber? Dad: T27 to Lhasa. Its leavi ng from
31、Platform 2. Mum: The meeting in Lhasa is very important for us, but Im sorry you cant come with us, Betty. Betty: So am I, but I cant miss two weeks of school. Mum: Will you remember everything Ive told you? Be especially careful with the door. Shut it when youre in and lock it when you go out. Bett
32、y: Yes. Mum. I can look after myself, although it wont be easy for me. Mum: Well, make sure you eat pienty of fresh fruit and vegetables. And Ive left lots of your favourite biscuits. Betty: Dont worry. I can cook simple meals. Dad: There wont be an ybody to wake you up in the morning. Betty: Ill be
33、 fine. My clock rings so loudly that it will certainly wake me up. Mum: Im sure Ive forgotten something, but I dont know what it is! (Announ ceme nt: We advise all passe ngers for Train T27 to Lhasa to go immediately to Platform 2. Your train is about to leave. Betty: Thats your train! Goodbye Mum,

Unit 2 I became so bored with their orders that I wished they would leave me alone. My perfect holiday As a boy, like all
35、other boys, I wan ted to be a man. But my pare nts did everyth ing for me. Actually, they man aged every min ute of my life. Although they loved me, I felt a bit unhappy with them. Zheng Chenyu, do your homework! Practise the piano! Turn off the TV! I became so bored with their orders that I wished
36、they would leave me alone. Well, my wish came true! Although my parents were very worried about leaving me, they had to go away on bus in ess for a few days. Now was my cha nee! 37、nd ate lots of sn acks. Then I enjo yed an excit ing film on TV, and after that I played computer games. I liked the games so much that I played un til mid-ni ght. The next morning I woke up late. I had to hurry to school without breakfast, but I was still late. The teacher asked me for my homework,
38、 but I could not hand it in. With an empty stomach, I was un able to play basketball with my classmates! I felt tired and sleepy at school all day long. When I got home, I tried to cook some rice, but I burnt it. I even dropped my fathers cup whe n I was cook in g! I found myself so bad at simple co
39、ok ing tasks. I started to feel Ion ely. I wan ted Mum and Dad to come home soon. Mum cooked such delicious food, and made sure I n ever forgot my homework. Dad always helped me with any difficult questi ons, and told funny jokes whe n I was un happy. Then I realised being home alone was not always
40、perfect. When my parents came home, they were happy to find that I could cook and tidy up now. I told them my home alone story and we all laughed. Module 5 Museums Unit 1 Don t cross that rope! (Betty, Lin gli ng and Daming are on the sec ond floor of a museum. Betty: What a won derful museum! Lin g
41、li ng: Its great, is nt it? Lets go to the Animal Room upstairs. I n eed some in formatio n for my project. Betty: Me too. Lets go. Wait, wheres Dami ng? Lin gli ng: There he is. Whats he doing over there? Daming: Hey, Betty! Lin gli ng! Come and see the mon key exhibiti on! Guard: No shout ing, ple
42、ase! Its aga inst the rules. Betty: Oh, no! Daming is in trouble aga in. Daming: Look at the mon keys tail!ve got to get in here Gard: Stop! Dont cross that rope! Cant you see the sig n, kid? 45、you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum The Science Museum in London By Tony Smith Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there is no shout ing and no running, and you must not touch anything. But the Science Museum is differe nt. It is no isy! People t
46、alk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very no isy mach ines as well. If you want an swers to all your questi ons about scie nee, this is the right place for you. I like to visit the rooms on the sec ond and third floors. You can lear n about com muni cati ons and the en vir onm
47、ent as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create en ergy. And in one room they eve n expla in how X-rays let you sec in side your body. The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, and it is my favourite
48、 too, because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with sand, you have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. You can also find out how people travel into space and back aga in. On the fourth and fifth floors, you can learn a
49、bout what medicine was like in the past. If you compare the medicine of the past with the medicine of today, you will feel very lucky n ext time you visit a doctor! The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. You can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum
50、 is free to enter, so you can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open daily from10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Scienee Museum. It is my favourite museum in the whole world! Module 6 Problems Unit 1 If I start after dinn er, I Dad: Tony, youre playing
51、the guitar again. Have you done your homework? Tony: No, not yet, but I have nt got much. If I start after dinner,门I finish it before I go to bed. Any way, you wan ted me to lear n an in strume nt. Dad: I want you to get into the habit of doing your homework as soon as you come home from school. If
