2、conversationsin it, 'andwhat is the useof abook,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversation?'So shewasconsidering in her own mind (aswell asshecould, for the hot day madeherfeel very sleepyand stupid), whetherthe pleasureof making a daisy-chain would beworth the trouble of gett
3、ing up and picking thedaisies,when suddenlyaWhite Rabbit with pink eyesran closeby her. There was nothing so VERY remarkablein that; nor did Alice think it so VERY much out of the way to hearthe Rabbitsayto itself, 'Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall belate!' (when shethought it over afterwards,it oc
4、curredto herthatsheoughtto havewondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOATPOCKET, andlooked at it, andthenhurried on, Alice startedto her feet, for it flashedacrossher mind that shehad never beforeseena rabbit with ei
5、ther awaistcoat-pocket, or a watch to takeout of it, andburning with curiosity, sheran acrossthe field after it, andfortunately was just in time to seeit pop down a large rabbit-hole underthe hedge.In anothermoment down went Alice after it, neveronceconsideringhow in the world shewasto get out again
6、.The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for someway, andthen dippedsuddenlydown, so suddenlythat Alice had not a momentto think aboutstopping herself before shefound herself falling down a very deepwell.Either the well was very deep,or shefell very slowly, for she had plenty of time asshewen
7、tdown to look about her and to wonder what was going to happennext. First, shetried to look down and make out what shewas coming to, but it wastoo dark to seeanything; then shelooked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboardsand book-shelves; hereand there she saw map
8、sand pictureshung upon pegs.Shetook down ajar from oneof theshelvesasshepassed; it was labelled 'ORANGE MARMALADE', but to hergreatdisappointmentit was empty: shedid not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody,so managedto put it into oneof the cupboards as shefell pastit.'Well
9、!' thoughtAlice to herself,'after sucha fall asthis, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How bravethey'll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't sayanything aboutit, even if I fell off the top of the house!' (Which was very likely true.)Down, down, down. Would the fall
10、NEVER cometo an end! 'I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time?' shesaidaloud. 'I must begetting somewherenearthecentreof the earth.Let me see: that would be four thousandmiles down, I think-' (for, you see,Alice had learnt severalthings of this sort in herlessonsin thesc
11、hoolroom, andthoughthis wasnota VERY good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, astherewas no oneto listen to her,still it wasgood practice to sayit over) '-yes,that'saboutthe right distance-but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I've got to?' (Alice had no ideawhat Latitu
12、de was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.)Presentlyshebeganagain. 'I wonder if I shall fall right THROUGH the earth! How funny it'll seemto comeoutamongthe peoplethat walk with their headsdownward! The Antipathies, I think-' (shewas rather glad thereWAS
13、no one listening, this time, asit didn't soundatall the right word) '-but I shall haveto askthem what the name of the country is, you know. Please,Ma'am, is this New Zealand or Australia?' (and shetried to curtseyasshespoke-fancy CURTSEYING as you're falling through the air! Do y
14、outhink you could manageit?) 'And what an ignorant little girl she'll think me for asking! No, it'll never do to ask: perhapsI shall seeit written up somewhere.' Down, down, down. Therewasnothing elseto do, soAlice soonbegantalking again.'Dinah'll miss me very much to-night,
15、I should think!' (Dinah was the cat.) 'I hope they'll rememberher saucerof milk at tea-time. Dinah my dear! I wish you were down herewith me! There areno mice in the air, I'm afraid, but you might catch a bat, andthat'svery like amouse,you know. But do cats eat bats,I wonder?'
16、;And hereAlice beganto get rathersleepy,andwent on sayingto herself, in a dreamy sort of way, 'Do catseat bats?Do catseatbats?'andsometimes,'Do batseat cats?'for, you see,asshecouldn't answereitherquestion,it didn't much matterwhich way sheput it. Shefelt that shewasdozing of
17、f, and hadjust begunto dream that shewas walking handin handwith Dinah, andsayingto her very earnestly,'Now, Dinah, tell me the truth: did you evereata bat?' when suddenly,thump! thump! down shecameupona heapof sticks anddry leaves,andthefall was over.Alice wasnotabit hurt, andshejumped upon
18、 to her feet in a moment: shelooked up, but it was all dark overhead;before her was anotherlong passage,and the White Rabbit was still in sight, hurrying down it. Therewasnotamomentto be lost: away went Alice like the wind, and wasjust in time to hearit say,asit turned a corner,'Oh my earsand wh
19、iskers, how late it's getting!' She was close behind it when sheturnedthe corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to beseen:she found herself in a long, low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hangingfrom the roof.There were doorsall round the hall, but they were all locked; and when Alice
20、 hadbeenall theway down onesideand up the other,trying every door, shewalked sadly down the middle, wondering how shewaseverto get out again.Suddenly shecameupon a little three-leggedtable, all madeof solid glass;therewas nothing on it except a tiny golden key, andAlice's first thought was that
21、it might belong to one of the doors of the hall; but, alas! eitherthe locks were too large, or the key was too small, but at any rate it would not openany of them. However,on the secondtime round, shecameupon a low curtain shehad not noticed before,and behind it wasa little door about fifteen inches
22、 high: shetried the little golden key in the lock, andto hergreatdelight it fitted!Alice openedthe doorandfound that it led into a small passagenot much larger than a rat-hole: sheknelt down andlooked alongthe passagento the loveliest gardenyou eversaw.How she longed to getout of that dark hall, and
23、 wander aboutamong thosebedsof bright flowers andthose cool fountains, but shecould not even get her headthough the doorway; 'and even if my head would go through,'thought poor Alice, 'it would beof very little usewithout my shoulders.Oh, how I wish I could shut up like atelescope!I thin
24、k I could, if I only know how to begin.' For, you see,somany out-of-the-way things had happenedlately, that Alice had begunto think that very few things indeedwere really impossible.There seemedto be no use in waiting by the little door, so shewent backto the table,half hoping she might find ano
25、therkey on it, or at any rate a book of rules for shutting people up like telescopes:this time shefound a little bottle on it, ('which certainly was not here before,' said Alice,) and round the neckof the bottle wasa paperlabel, with the words 'DRINK ME' beautifully printed on it in
26、large letters.It wasall very well to say'Drink me,'but the wise little Alice wasnot going to do THAT in a hurry. 'No, I'll look first,' shesaid, 'andseewhether it's marked "poison" or not' for shehad read severalnice little histories about children who hadgo
27、t burnt, andeatenup by wild beastsandother unpleasantthings, all becausethey WOULD not rememberthe simple rules their friends had taught them: suchas,that a red-hot poker will burn you if you hold it too long; and that if you cut your finger VERY deeplywith a knife, it usually bleeds;and shehad neve
28、rforgotten that, if you drink much from a bottle marked'poison,' it is almost certain to disagreewith you, sooneror later.However, this bottle was NOT marked'poison,'soAlice venturedto tasteit, andfinding it very nice, (it had,in fact, a sort of mixed flavour of cherry-tart, custard,
29、pine-apple, roastturkey, toffee, and hot butteredtoast,) shevery soon finished it off.*'What a curious feeling!' saidAlice; 'I mustbe shutting up like a telescope.'And soit was indeed: shewas now only tenincheshigh, and herface brightened up at thethought that shewas now the right si
30、ze for going through the little door into that lovely garden.First, however, shewaited for a few minutes to seeif shewas going to shrink any further: shefelt a little nervousaboutthis; 'for it might end, you know,' saidAlice to herself, 'in my going out altogether, like a candle. I wonde
31、r what I should belike then?'And shetried to fancy what the flame of a candleis like after the candleis blown out, for shecould not remembereverhaving seensucha thing.After awhile, finding that nothing more happenedshedecidedon going into thegardenat once; but, alasfor poor Alice! when shegot to
32、 the door, shefound shehad forgotten the little golden key, andwhenshewent back to the table for it, shefound shecould not possibly reach it: she could seeit quite plainly through the glass, and shetried herbestto climb up one of the legs of the table, but it wastoo slippery; and when shehadtired he
33、rself out with trying, the poor little thing sat down and cried.'Come, there'sno usein crying like that!' saidAlice to herself, rather sharply; 'I adviseyou to leave off this minute!' Shegenerally gave herself very good advice, (though shevery seldom followed it), andsometimesshe
34、scoldedherselfso severelyasto bring tearsinto her eyes;and once sherememberedtrying to box her own earsfor having cheatedherselfin agameof croquet shewas playing againstherself, for this curious child was very fond of pretendingto betwo people.'But it's no usenow,'thought poor Alice,
35、9;to pretendto betwo people! Why, there'shardly enoughof me left to makeONE respectableperson!'Soon hereyefell on a little glassbox that was lying underthe table: sheopenedit, andfound in it a very small cake,on which the words 'EAT ME' were beautifully markedin currants.'Well, I
36、'll eat it,' saidAlice, 'andif it makesmegrow larger, I can reachthe key; and if it makesmegrow smaller, I can creepunderthe door; so either way I'll get into the garden,and I don't carewhich happens!'Sheatea little bit, and said anxiously to herself, 'Which way? Which wa
37、y?',holding herhandon the top of herheadto feel which way it was growing, and shewasquite surprisedto find that she remainedthesamesize: to be sure,this generally happenswhen oneeatscake,but Alice hadgot so much into the way of expectingnothing but out-of-the-way things to happen,that it seemedq
38、uite dull andstupidfor life to go on in the common way.So shesetto work, andvery soon finished off the cake.*CHAPTER IIThe Pool of Tears'Curiouserandcuriouser!' cried Alice (shewas so much surprised,that for the moment shequite forgot how to speakgood English); 'now I'm opening out l
39、ike the largesttelescopethat everwas! Good-bye,feet!' (for when shelooked down at her feet, they seemedto bealmostout of sight, they were getting so far off). 'Oh, my poor little feet, I wonder who will put on your shoesand stockings for you now, dears?I'm sureI shan't beable! I shal
40、l be a greatdeal too far off to trouble myself aboutyou: you mustmanagethe bestway you can;-but I must bekind to them,'thought Alice, 'or perhapsthey won't walk the way I want to go! Let mesee:I'll give them a new pair of bootsevery Christmas.'And shewent on planning to herselfho
41、w shewould manageit. 'They must go by the carrier,'she thought; 'and how funny it'll seem,sendingpresentsto one'sown feet! And how odd the directions will look!ALICE'S RIGHT FOOT, ESQ. HEARTHRUG, NEAR THE FENDER, (WITH ALICE'S LOVE).Oh dear,what nonsenseI'm talking!
42、39;Justthen her headstruck againstthe roof of the hall: in fact she wasnow more than nine feet high, andsheatoncetook up the little goldenkey andhurried off to the gardendoor.Poor Alice! It wasasmuch asshecould do,lying down on oneside, to look through into the gardenwith one eye; but to get through
43、 was more hopelessthan ever: shesat down and beganto cry again.'You ought to beashamedof yourself,'said Alice, 'a great girl like you,' (shemight well saythis), 'to go on crying in this way! Stop this moment, I tell you!' But shewent on all the same,shedding gallons of tears,
44、until therewasa large pool all round her, aboutfour inchesdeepand reachinghalf down the hall.After a time shehearda little pattering of feet in the distance,andshehastily dried her eyesto see what was coming. It was theWhite Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed with a pair of white kid gloves in one
45、 handand a largefan in the other: hecametrotting along in agreathurry, muttering to himself ashecame,'Oh! the Duchess,the Duchess! Oh! won't shebesavageif I've kept her waiting!' Alice felt so desperatethat shewas readyto askhelp of any one;so, when the Rabbit camenearher,shebegan,in
46、 alow, timid voice, 'If you please,sir-' The Rabbit startedviolently, droppedthe white kid gloves andthe fan, andskurried away into the darknessashard ashecould go.Alice took up the fan andgloves, and,asthe hall wasvery hot, shekept fanning herselfall the time shewent on talking: 'Dear,d
47、ear! How queereverything is to-day! And yesterdaythings went on just asusual.I wonder if I've beenchangedin the night? Let methink: was I the samewhen I got up this morning? I almost think I can rememberfeeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the wor

53、39;I must be Mabel after all, andI shall have to go and live in that poky little house,and have next to no toys to play with, andoh! ever so many lessonsto learn! No, I've madeup my mind about it; if I'm Mabel, I'll stay down here! It'll be no usetheir putting their headsdown and say

56、l again.'Shegot up and went to the table to measureherselfby it, and found that,as nearly asshecould guess,shewas now abouttwo feet high, and was going on shrinking rapidly: shesoonfound out that the causeof this wasthe fan shewas holding, and she dropped it hastily, just in time to avoid shrink
57、ing away altogether.'That WAS anarrow escape!'said Alice, a good dealfrightened at the suddenchange,but very glad to find herself still in existence;'andnow for the garden!'andsheran with all speedbackto the little door: but, alas! the little doorwas shutagain, andthe little goldenke
