1、Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games began at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeu

2、s. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash. This was the only event until 724 BC .In 708 the pentathlon was added . Anc

3、ient Olympic Games This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included. The ancient Greeks were highly competitive and believed strongly in the concept of competitio

4、n or contest. The ultimate Greek goal was to be the best. All aspects of life, especially athletics, were centered around this concept. It was therefore considered one of the greatest honors to win a victory at Olympia. The athletes competed for honor, not for material goods. The victors of these ea

5、rly games were crowned with wreaths from a sacred olive tree that grew behind the temple of Zeus. They marched around the grove to the accompaniment of a flute while admirers chanted songs written by a prominent poet. Ancient Olympic Games Athletics were of prime importance to the Greeks. The educat

6、ion of boys concentrated on athletics and music as well as academic subjects such as philosophy. Education took place in the gymnasion and the palaistra as well as the academy. The Games were held every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD, when they were abolished by the Roman Emperor. The ancient Olym

7、pic Games lasted for 1170 years.It was not until 1896 that the first Olympics of modern times were held in Athens. The Olympics have become the worlds most important athletic events and a symbol of friendship of all the people of the world.Origin of Basketball Basketball. The worlds greatest sport e

8、ver. But of course, it hasnt been around since the world began. No, somebody had to have invented it. And that somebody would be James Naismith. Born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada, this Canadian Gym Teacher and Physician would soon be the founder of basketball. It all started in December of 1891. Nais

9、mith was teaching in Springfield, Massachusetts and was asked by Luther H. Gulick, the Headmaster of the school for Christian Works to make a new sport. Origin of Basketball The main idea of the sport was mainly to be played inside when it was too cold to go outside. The new sport also had to keep a

10、thletes in their top conditions between the baseball and football season. Naismith began to work. The first game-ball was a soccer ball. The first baskets were peach baskets that Naismith cleverly thought of hanging on the wall. From there, the legacy of basketball began. Originally, there was 9 men

11、 to each team, but the objective was still the same; to pass the ball to other players on your team and put the ball in the opposing teams net, or basket back then. From there, basketball caught on like a wildfire Origin of Basketball During 1885 high schools and colleges began to adopt the game, an

12、d by 1898, the first professional league was founded. After the first game played, Naismith drafted 13 rules and regulations, but many more were yet to come.
