This novel focuses on the theme of conflicts and compromise between different races and cultures. When different civilization conflict, if the weak one dont ch

12、ange, dont step forward, means that disappear.Piquette reflects the stereotype of the doomed minority figure. She accumulates an extraordinary number of handicaps, all of which are seen to be indirectly related to her Mtis origins. Piquettes tragedy is that, like the loons, she belongs to a more aut

13、hentic heritage which has been destroyed. Yet, we also see a more tenacious(坚持的,顽强的,固执的)Piquette; in her silence, rejections, and refusals, she is a character who is fighting for her own survival in a world clearly divided along class lines and this tenacity is seen principally in her rejection of V

14、anessas self-satisfaction and sense of superiority.Piquette seeks to fit into the main currents of culture but is marginalized by the white-determinate society. Its the external causes that determines Piquettes firm character and her tragic lot.Causes of Piquettes FatePiquette Tonnerre accumulates t

Piquette had tuberculosis of the bone, and for the good of her health, Vanessas father took her up to Diamond Lake with them that summer. During the two months

17、at Diamond Lake, Piquette seemed to be interested in nothing and refused to play with Vanessa, which makes Vanessa feel that she was mysterious. But four years later, she had changed into an attractive girl and was to get married with a handsome white guy. Another three years later, Piquette had com

18、e back with two babies after divorce. One winter night, the cottage she lived in caught fire and she died with the two babies. In this progress, Piquettes character had great changes, from silent to lively, from plain to slender. Before, she was emotionless and her face was stolid and expressionless. She could not express herself with her own ideas. But later, she changed: her face was fille
