1、中国高校名称的汉英译范式探微姜光辉( 南京农业大学工学 院，南京，210031,摘要 : 随着中外教育交流的更加频繁，我国各高校都与国外高校和科研机构建立了友好关 系。于是各校有必要将本校的汉语名称译成外语， 尤其是英语。根据翻译原则和标准， 专有 名称的翻译要科学、 要简洁、 要准确和约定俗成。 首先确认本校的大学地位或学院地位或大 专学校定位，然后明确本校的研究型或综合型或专业型，最后选择英文词语排列结构。关键词 : 校名 ; 英译 ; 范式 ; 探微A Probe into Chinese Universities English Version ParadigmAbstract: Th

Three processes are put forward in order to obtain ideal destination.Key Words: Chinese Universities; English Version; Translation Formula、尸 、-前言内地的大专院校在走向现代化、 国际化的进程中有许多问题需要解决科探索。 给学校更名、译名就是重要的环节。由于各个大专院校的传统名称难以翻译或者管理高层不太重视报刊、 电视台、 网络等媒体出现大量外文名称古怪的译文和外文名称欠妥的译法。 既然学校 有起外文

4、名称的意愿， 那么它们就必须遵照国际大学的命名范式， 不亦另外搞一套， 显得不 伦不类。1.校名翻译的借鉴范式1.1. 综合大学的英文名称有两种常见范式 其一，城市（州、省、国等）名称或人物名称及其他专有名称 + University ，例如 London University ，New York State University ，Hong Kong University（ Pearsal , 2001:946）；中国内地许多大学如此排列外文校名， 如 Nanjing University ，Hubei University 等。 其二，城市、 省区、州等置于 of 之后。Universit

5、y of California , University of Chicago ,University of Utach , 这是州名称后省去了普通名词 state or city 。如采取第一种范式， 则 state 通常要保留。 第二 种范式在内地没有发现例证， 在中国香港也只有 City University of Hong Kong （香港城市大 学）。综合大学的第三种范式是用方位词 + University ，如美国路易斯安纳州的 Southern University ，俄克拉何马州的 Northwestern State University 和 Northeastern Sta

6、te University 以及 Central State University ， 德克萨 斯有 Midwestern University ， 华盛 顿特区 有 Southeastern University ，华盛顿州又 Western Washington University 等等。结论这样得 出：方位词的形容词形式 +州（市） +University 是第一种常见范式。第三种是方位词名词形 式+ （州、市） + University, 然而其用法比较少见，仅仅找出 3 例：新泽西州的 West-East University, 美国一览译为西东大学 （ 沈明德 ,2002:240

7、） ,德克萨斯州的 West TexasState University 和 East Texas State University （东德克萨斯州大学） 。这第二种范式罕见 的原因大致是方位词修饰名词时多用其形容词形式。 值得指出的是美国这些大学的东西南北 等位置几乎都是相对于本州或特区内的方位，而非在全美的方位。中国内地的几所大学也有方为词，但均指其在全国的相对位置。东南大学的英文名称为 Southeast University（ 顾冠群 ,2003 :1 ）, 西北大学译为 Northwest University（ 顾建 新,2004 ： 16 ），东北大学为 Northeast Un

8、iversity 。西北大学有人将其译为 Northwestern University（ 张岂之 ,2003:8） 。内地有第三种选择就是让方位词失去了方位概念，将其看作专有名称，于是有了汉语拼音法 ,“高校全英语教学模式探析”一文中将华中科技大学译为Huazhong University of Science and Technology（张千帆 ,2003:6 ） 。1.2有专业方向或特色的大学名称及翻译策略 这类大学的名称较长，排列起来颇有讲究，不亦随心所欲地堆砌。美国的这种大学有 两类名称范式。其一，州、市等名称 + University （ Institute 或 College

9、或 Academy ） + of + 专业特色。例如 Massachusetts Institute of Technology （ 麻州理工学院） ，College of the Holy Cross （圣十字学院） ， Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science（费城药科学院） ，Mannes College of Music （曼内斯音乐学院） ， Corcoran School of Art （科客伦艺术学院） 。 其二，州、市名称 +专业特色（形容词） + University （ Institute ，College ，Academy

10、，School ）。 例如 Texas Technological University ，Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University（得州农机大学）。这时 Technological 可以缩写成 tech 。而 Agricultural and Mechanical 则常常 缩写成 A&M 。第三种范式极为稀缺，如 University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences（阿肯色医科大学） 。其结构链为大学 +介词 of +地名+介词 for +专业特色。 如此复杂的结构导致 了极为罕见的使用例证。 内地大学在翻译时

11、有前两种形式。 第一类译法的大学如南京工业大 学译为 Nanjing University of Technology ，西安科技大学译为 Xian University of Science and Technology 。使用第二译法的大学中有南京农业大学译成（陈友松， 2004:3 ） Nanjing Agricultural University 。使用第三译法的高校在中国暂且未找到实例。而使用第四译法 （ Cheng Dongfeng ， 2004:2 ） 仅有中国科技大学（ University of Science and Technology of China ），其与众不同的

12、地方是把地名置于专业特色之后,再用 of 连接。1.3私立或民办大学或学院的翻译策略英美私立大学的名称通常为人名或赞助人名+ 大学（ University ）或学院（ Institute ，College 等）。那些不一人名命名的私立大学与公办大学名称格式相同，故在此不予重复。Harvard University 是私立大学的最好例证。新罕布什尔州有个Frankling Pierce College 。+ University中国内地尚未发现以个人名字命名的私立大学或民办大学，主要采用企业名称 或 College 的形式如陕西有 505 大学，译为 505 University ，宁波有一个万

13、里学院译为 Wanli College ( University )。2.常见及专业特色型高校名称翻译2.1. 工业类高校名称翻译工业大学译为 University of Technology 或 Polytechnic University ；工业学院或工学院 译为 Institute of Technology 。钢铁学院译为 (江建名， 1985 ：26 )Institute of Iron and Steel Engineering 。石油学院译为 Petroleum Institute 或 Institute of Petroleum Industry 。化工学 院译为 Instit

14、ute of Chemical Engineering 。矿业大学译为 University of Mining 。地质学院译 为 Geological Institute 。水电学 院译 为 Institute of Hydraulic Power Technology 或 engineering 。机械学院译为 Mechanical Institute 或 Institute of Machinery 。轻工业学院译 为 Institute of Light Industry 。纺织学院译为 Institute of Textile Industry 或 Technology 。建 材学院

17、High Executive Officials 。2.4. 医疗卫生类高校名称翻译医科大学 University of Medical Science 。医学院译为 Medical College 。中医药大学译 为 University of the Traditional Chinese Medicine 简称 the TCM 。针灸学院 School of Acupuncture 。药科大学可以译为 University of Medicine 或 Pharmacy Engineering 或 Technology 或 science 。卫生专科学校译为 Academy of Publ

18、ic Health 。2.5. 交通运输高校名称翻译交通大学译为 Communication University 或 Jiaotong University 前者表示专业特色， 后者表示学校已失去特色迈入综合大学。运输学院译为 College 或 Institute of Traffic and Transportation 。交通职业学院译为 College of Communication Vocation 。航空学院译为 Institute of Aeronautical Engineering 。航空航天大学译为 University of Aeronautics and Astro

19、nomy 铁路运输学院译成 College of Railway 或 Railroad Transportation 。海运学院译 为 Ocean Shipping Academy 或 College ，旧的译法 Mercantile Marine Institute 已罕见。2.6. 师范类高校名称翻译师范大学译为 Normal University ，而师范学院译为 Normal College 或 Teachers College 。教育学院译为 Educational College 或 Institute of Education 。教师进修学院译为 Teachers Trainin

20、g College 。师资培训中心为 Center 或 School of Teacher Training 。师范 专科学校 School of Teachers 或 Teachers College 。2.7. 文化艺术高校名称翻译美术学院译为 Academy of Fine Arts 。艺术学院译为 Academy of Artists 。音乐学院译 为 Conservatory of Music 。戏剧学院为 Theatrical Institute 或 School of Drama 。电影学院为 Academy of Cinema Technology或 Movie Institu

21、te 。舞蹈学院为 College of Dancers 或Dancing 。2.8. 语言类高校名称翻译外语大学译为 University of Foreign Study 或 International Study University ，往日的 Foreign Languages Institute 的译法已废弃了。 语言大学译为 Languages Study University ， 其中 Study 也可以译为 Studies 。2.9. 涉外类高校名称翻译国际关系学院译为 College of International Relations ，外交学院为 College of F

22、oreign Affairs 或 Diplomatic Academy 。外贸学院译为 College of Foreign Trade 或 College of International Affairs 或 International Study University 。翻译学院译为 College of Translators and Interpreters 。2.10. 财经审计类高校名称翻译审计学院译为 College of Finance Audit 或 Auditing Academy 。财经大学译为 University of Finance and Economics 。统

23、计学院译为 College of Statistics 。经贸学院为 College of International Business and Economics。商贸学院译为 College of Trade and Business 。2.11. 其他高校名称翻译军事院校译为 Academy of Military 或 Air Force 或 Marine Corps 或 Navy 。船舶学院译 为 Marine 或 Maritime Engineering Institute 。人口学院译为 College of Demography 。气象 学院应译为 Meteorological

24、College 或 College of Meteorology 。神学院译为 School of Christ 或 God 。佛教学院译为 School of Buddhism 或 Buddhist School ，这里的 School 寓意双关 既指学院（美国英语） ，又指宗教流派。残疾（盲聋哑等）学院译为 School of Special Education 。 广播电 视大学 译为 Radio and Television University 或 Air EducationalUniversity 或者 Open University 。体育大学 University of Physical Culture or Education职工大学译为 School of Staff-training 或 Corporate Vocation 。业余大学译为 Part-time Reeducation School 。夜大译为 Evening Courses School 。自修大学译成 Self-e
