1、Text OneThe Call of the Wildby Jack London1. Buck, a large dog, used to live in the south. But this was 1897, whe n men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. Buck was stole n and take n to the n orth, which was entirely new to him, being so close to the dangerous wilder ness.

When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, i but Buck was too quic
10、k for him and he bit the mans hand hard. Then the rope was pulled aga in and Buck- had to let go.I6. That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Fran cisco. He took off Bucks rope and pushed him into a woode n box. The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway stati on
11、 and put on a train to the no rth. For two days and ni ghts the train traveled n orth, and for two days and ni ghts Buck n either ate nor dra nk. For two days and nights Buck got angrier and hungrier and thirstier. His eyes grew red and he bit anything- that moved.6. 当天晚上,那个人将巴克带到旧金山一间酒吧的里屋中,解下巴克身上的

In Seattle four men took Buck to a small, high-walled back garde n, where a fat man in an old red coat was waiting. Buck was now very angry in deed and he jumped and bit at the si
13、des of his box. The fat man smiled and went to get an ax and a club. As the fat man hit the box with his ax, Buck jumped at the sides, growling and biting, pull ing with his teeth at the pieces of broke n wood. After a few mi nu tes there was a hole big eno ugh for Buck to get out.7. 到了西雅图之后,四个男子把巴克

It was i the first time anyone had hit him with a club and he did not un dersta nd. He stood up, and jumped aga in. Aga in the club hit him and he crashed
16、to the ground. There was blood on his nose and mouth and ears. Then the fat man walked up and hit him aga in, very hard, on the no se. The pain was terrible. Aga in, Buck jumped at the man and aga in he was hit to the gro und. At last whe n he jumped, the man kno cked him dow n and he did not move.8

19、ough Buck was angry in side, he did not move. The soft, white thing was also falli ng through the air, and it fell onto him. He tried to smell it, and the n caught som
29、e on his tongue. It bit like fire, and then disappeared. Thirty or forty more dogs ran up and made a circle around the fight, watching silently. Curly tried to attack the dog who had bitten her; helbit her a sec ond time , and j
33、umped away. Whe n she- attacked him aga in, he kno cked her backwards, and she fell on the ground. She n ever stood up aga in, becausethis was what the other dogs were waiting for. I n a mome nt she was un der a crowd of dogs.23 . It was all very sudden. Buck saw Spitz run out from the crowd with hi
34、s ton gue out of his mouth, laughing. Then he saw Franois with an ax, and two or three other men with clubs jump in among the dogs. Two minutes later the last of the dogs was chased away. But Curly lay dead in the snow , her body torn almost to pieces. Curlys death often came back to Buck in his dre
35、ams. He understood that once a dog was down on the ground, he was dead. 37、 watch ing them. He also learnt to stop and turn when Franois shouted.25 . Those three are very good dogs, Franois told Perrault.
