It represents a new beginning whe n people send off the old days and welcome the new on es.As the first

2、day of the year, Yuandan has bee n con sidered to be the most important festival si nee the ancient times.Customs1. Kaisui(begi nning of the year): Accord ing to the Chin ese traditi onal custom, starti ng from haishi(9p.m. to 11p.m.)of the last eve ning of the twelfth lunar mon th, each family must

3、 prepare offeri ng s to deities at the altar. At the same time, they too prepare food for the New Year day: The whole family will then stay awake together to atte nd to the year(called shou sui).After haishi, zishi(11p.m. to 1a.m.)will come, and this is the arrival of New Year(Yuandan). At this mome

4、nt, people begin the celebrati on with fireworks. Vegetaria n and sweet foods will then be placed are the altar for offerings,and incense beburned to welcome the deities. In the ancient times, it wasbelieved that haishi connected the two years and thus wascalled kaisui.At the same ni ght,some famili

5、es will follow theinstructionin Tongshu and place preparing altar in thedirecti onof the fortune deity duri ng the fortune time toreceive the deity. The n orther n Chin ese has the habit of taki ngjiao zi(dumplingmade of flour with vegetable and meatwrapped in side). Some people may put a sweet or a coi n in side jiao zi, hop

7、 ing to have a sweet year after tast ing the sweet and a wealthy year after tast ing the coin. on the other hand, the southernChinese have the taboo for killing onYuandan. Therefore, they do not take meat in tee morni ng of Yuandan, so as to avoid bloodshed or mutual slaughter. In order to evade mis

8、fort une, they have the first meal of this day without meat. In stead, they take vegetaria n food for the sake of virtue.3. What is special duri ng the New Y ear is that pare nts orelders will distribute red packets(a ng pao or ya sui qia n)to the childre n. People in the an cie nt times were more p

9、articular in giving away the red packets: the distributi on took place on the eve of New Year so that the kids could suppress the past year and en ter the New Year.
