Within the company, people tend to spend hours making analysis of what has happened at department or company level, most of which you are informed already, and anyway everythings the stereotype of state-owned enterprises so you cant change it! That sounds rather critical, but some meetings are m

There was fortunately a wealth of discussion from everyonevery harmonious by and large. At the end, however, the Ma

、naging Director persisted in going through what wed committed to and checking our understanding of our contributions. It took another half an hour, though I felt this was worthy of being recreated in future as it could avoid potential mix-ups. Speaker 2 F: Last Friday, we made for an autonomous city

But I have to say our aim for the day was to figure out by concerted efforts some more desirable conditions on the bid wed put in to develop a large site for them. We didnt exactly take off empty-handed but we accepte

、d tighter deadlines reluctantly than wed like. Anyway, from my viewpoint it was quite an instructive meeting for some of our personnel on what to beware of in future work. I admit that I dont agree with the organizers actually. They kept allowing people to putting forward questions that had nothing

、to do with the issue in hand and this made us lose focus, even though we kept bringing the discussion back to the main agenda. That really should have been avoided I suppose. Speaker 3 M: A new line manager was appointed in my department and its so scary going to a meeting with him. Well, routinely

、the board gathers to review remuneration and plan expenditure at the end of the financial year, and its also the period when we have our individual achievements and failures examined and receive feedback. Im not against this in principle honestly. Its just the way its handled. But at times I make a

、contrast between my last boss and the new one. My last boss used to arrive out of breath, shuffle through papers, which he was clearly looking at for the first time, and make some vague remarks about my job, without allowing any interventions or explanations. Now, though, the new manager had drawn a

、 comprehensive chart of my sales performance. So the meeting was clear and helpful and I left feeling positive. Thats absolutely the way to continue. Speaker 4 F: It was such a boring and suffering night. Id been staying at the office all afternoon seeking to make a decision with five other people f

、rom the department. It wasnt as easy as expected so we did take time to evaluate the different options. What Im saying is that its pretty tricky to find the right person to appoint at a position in that you have to consider how the candidate hits it off with the rest of the team and thats particular

、ly critical in a small operation like ours. Anyway, that was what irritates me. I really back up our line manager, but shes not a flawless head. I cant criticize the ground work she does before meetings or the documents she draws up. Its just that she fails to make up her mind so a couple of people

、tend to take over. I wouldnt allow that, because it can unbalance a meeting. Speaker 5 M: Frankly, Im not enthusiastic about round-the-clock meetings at Head Office. Theres plenty of matters to talk over so time is extended, even a whole day sometimes, but its difficult to keep concentrating, especi

、ally in the afternoon! I struggled to stay focused during the last one though. So I decided that it was the way it had been organizeda host of short sessions which needed active participation right after lunch, why the more complex affairs had been discussed fully first thing. I must remember to do

、that. These meetings where we explore the strengths and weaknesses of possible additions to our range are very important. An added bonus is that we occasionally gain a chance to observe how junior staff are shaping up, because they sometimes give short presentations on the proposed models. Thats rea

、e a promising industry and very profitable. C. He hates to depend on oil supplies from the Middle East. 答案:B解析 23-30F: Mr. Carlos Ghosn, thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview you. As the CEO of Renault and Nissan, you have thrown your corporate reputation into the post-gasoline car. C

、an I ask you what your opinion is about the electric ear?M: To be honest, I am quite optimistic when discussing a future where zero-emissions vehicles are embraced, not out of altruism towards Mother Earth or hostility towards the oil-rich Middle East, but just because they are good business. It is

、real and it is here.F: We all know that many people held the same opinion in the past, but they were wrong. So why now? What makes you believe now is the time?M: The electric ear appeared at the beginning of the century, then disappeared, appeared in the 1950s, then disappeared, appeared in the 1970

、s, then disappeared. But a lot of things have changed. We are putting our chips and we are putting our investment and we are putting our efforts behind this belief that now is the time.F: OK. Can you further explain what external or physical conditions have changed?M: Well, one critical element was

、technological progress. The battery of today is capable of doing things that the battery of 10 years ago was not capable of. Supplying enough energy for a cars wildly varying power needs was once impractical. It is available today at reasonable prices. The second element is the price of oil. I asked

、 the audience whether anyone thought the price would go down. No hands went up. With the U. S. , China, Brazil, Indonesia, Eastern Europe and Western Europe all growing, imagine what the price of oil will be if we dont change the consumption.F: Do you think developing countries have any relationship

、 with the coming of the electric car?M: The coming boom in car ownership in developing economies will likely increase this perception. I predict a spike from 700 million cars today to some 1.5 billion globally. If youre going to let developing countries have as many cars as they wantand theyre going

、 to have as many cars as they want one way or anotherthere is no absolute alternative but to go for zero emissions. Therefore, the only zero-emission vehicle available today is electric. So we decided now is the time.F: Then the next question will be how you can make electric cars a practical realit

、y.M: Our strategy is to make it a consumer favorite. Driving an electric car is pure pleasure. Im sure that when the car is on the market in the U. S. and people start to drive it, it will totally change the image of an electric car. Starting next year, Nissan and Renault plan to offer a wide range

、of such vehicles. We want the car to be affordable, which means, if you want to buy an electric car, it has to cost the same as regular cars.F: Do you really think that you can do this alone? I mean, do you need any investment from others? It is not an easy job. What is the biggest difficulty in the

、 future?M: You are right. We will require a certain degree of investment from individuals, businesses and perhaps governments. Car buyers with garages at home should be able to upgrade their electric outlets to facilitate an electric cars plug. Electric companies will pay about $1,000 for devices re

、sembling parking meters that can be arranged along curbs to charge the vehicles.F: Thats now an easy job?M: Absolutely not. Drivers in a hurry will have to go to a quick-charge station, which can fill up 80% of a battery in 30 minutes. The equipment isnt cheap: a quick- charge device, costs $ 30,000

、. Thats why governments need to step in and spur the market via regulation. Its not possible unless government supports you.F: I have another question. What is the advantage of your business?M: I think that I would describe my firms multinational character as a plus. In addition to its well-known Fr

、ench and Japanese components, it also owns or partners with automakers in Korea, Romania and Russia. We are a unique combination of different cultures, and it works. Its complicated, it goes against all the advice, but it works. In 2008, the company had more than $100 billion in global revenues.F: W

、ow, great. Thats amazing. OK, finally, I want to know what you have learned from your experience. What you would like to share with our readers?M: The very unpredictability of my own pathlike the technological change my industry is now experiencingoffers a fairly good lesson about managing a career.

、 A career, no matter what, you cant predict, you cant plan. Youre going to be offered much more opportunity than you ever think could happen. The only thing to make sure of is that your mindset is open enough when the opportunity comes.2. Why does Carlos Ghosn think that the era of the electric car is coming now? A. The electric car has appeared and disappeared twice in history. B. The electric car has changed this time. C. The condition of technology is different from that of the pa
