2、 are many achievements in english teaching and learning. in the last two decades, with the introduction of computer technology into education, call has become more and more popular in english teaching of middle school in china. the work presented in this paper focus on the problems which exist in ca

3、ll through the questionnaire. based on the teaching principles and missions of call, it aims to promote the effective use of multimedia in the application of english teaching.simply stated, computer assisted language learning (call) can be defined as “the search for and study of applications of the

4、computer in language teaching and learning” from a researchers perspective (levy, 1997). actually, america is the earliest country which studies how to use the computer technology into education. in 1981, ibm pc came out which contributed to the usage of cai. then in 1991, people in massachusetts in

5、stitute of technology exploited athena (an independent package which is used to deal with data), and this opened a new era of cai. later, call came to the school in 1980(xu, 2010).huang (2001) listed most of the important dates of call in china from 1984 to late 1990s, including the birth of callnet

6、, some important symposiums, conferences, activities, etc. and its potential. since tim johns of birmingham university conducted a call workshop in china in the year 1984, call has been discussed for over 20 years and explored in different fields in applied linguistics. at the early stage, literatur

7、e covers a variety of translations or quotations from oversea academic publications; from 1994 to 2004, call seems to be growing up very rapidly and many scholars have pioneered in different fields such as the application of computer in listening, speaking, reading, writing, distance learning, machi

8、ne translation, corpus linguistics, language testing and so on (li, 2004); another development is the introduction to the integration of linguistic theories into call study(wang & ning 2002). moreover, as a result of long-term exploration and thinking in fields of cai and call, some chinese scholars

9、, in the light of the ancient chinese philosophical thinking, raised a theory, which promote a more understandable concept in chinese way. furthermore, recent years have witnessed great efforts made by researchers in china to improve the effectiveness of cael. most of them focused on the technical a

10、spects of software design, for it is the foundation of cael. li haiying (2007) holds that software for efl (english as a foreign language) teaching and learning is limited in quantity. whats worse, the content of efl courseware is not all satisfactory. in addition, zhang yan (2009) holds that as the

11、 development of call starts from higher education, call software in china is mainly developed for college and university students. also, liu fengxiang (2005) mentioned that because of short history of call development in china, call software is still somewhat in shortage. higgins (1998) held that ca

12、el requires computers and software as well as other equipment all of which are expensive. once computer laboratories are established, it is not possible to re-equip them for several years. there are many limitations of equipment and facilities, and many teachers may not be able to do what they want

13、to do. with no doubt, computer software plays an important part in the application of call. therefore, many researchers hope designers can pay more attention to it, and develop the software which is more suitable to english learners. 这里增加一个过渡段,“there are some empirical studies in this area.”whats mo

14、re, yang na (2008) makes a questionnaire among the middle school students in english listening class. from the results of the experiments and questionnaire, she finds that call makes most students interested in english to some extent. however, she also believes that there exist many problems to be s

15、olved in the course of using call. zhang dimei (1998) holds that the multimedia courseware is the key link affecting the courseware quality and teaching results. however, the course wares made by the teachers are not quite good. it is suitable for both teachers and students. therefore, it lacks spec

16、ific guidance. whats worse, teachers evolution of thoughts and idea cant keep up with the pace of development of information technology. whats more, english teachers are arts graduate, they lack the concept of using the medium teaching, and they get used to the traditional teaching. though many teac

17、hers are trying to use it, they dont have suitable multimedia material (wang, 2006). so it is difficult to achieve the purpose of the optimization effect. besides, some teachers will list plenty of information on the computer, no matter it is important or not, which makes their students confused, no

18、t knowing which information is the most important knowledge. therefore, the students lose the confidence, and this which makes them get tired of learning(chen,2005). students do not agree that computer can replace the teacher, but they do agree call is more interesting and motivating. however, stude

21、hanghai, it is hoped to find the right methods make the teachers of middle school make full use of cael. the study may provide references for english learning with the empirical experiences after the analysis.2、 研究目标与主要内容(含论文提纲) firstly, this paper is to focus on the problems which exist in cael thr
