3、t rewarding experiences of my life. Although at times, learning a language was frustrating, it was well worth the effort. My experience with a foreign language began in junior middle school, when I took my first English class. I had a kind and patient teacher who often praised all of the students. B
4、ecause of this positive method, I eagerly answered all the questions I could, never worrying much about making mistakes. I was at the top of my class for two years. When I went to senior middle school, I was eager to continue studying English; however, my experience in senior school was very differe
5、nt from before. While my former teacher had been patient with all the students, my new teacher quickly punished those who gave incorrect answers. Whenever we answered incorrectly, she pointed a long stick at us and, shaking it up and down, shouted, “No! No! No! ”It didn ttake me long to lose my eage
6、rnessto answer questions. Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but also I totally lost my desire to say anything at all in English. However, that state didn tlast long. When I went to college, I learned that all students were required to take an English course. Unlike my senior middle
7、school teacher, my college English teachers were patient and kind, and none of them carded long, pointed sticks! However, the situation was far from perfect. As our classes were very large, I was only able to answer a couple of questions in each class period. Also, after a few weeks of classes, I no
8、ticed there were many students who spoke much better than I did. I began to feel frightened. So once again, although for different reasons, I was afraid to speak. It seemed my English was going to stay at the same level forever. The Importance of Setting Goals Why is setting goals important? Because
9、 goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen. Successful and happy people have a vision of how their life should be and they set lots of goals to help them reach their vision. By setting go
10、als you are taking control of your life. It s like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind (her goal) which is laid out for her on a map.She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other dr
11、iver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be? Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. Winners decide wh
12、at they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren t difficult to set and they arent difficult to reach. It sup to you to find out what your goals, ideals and visions really are. You are the one who must decide
13、what to pursue and in what direction to aim your life. Research tells us that when we write a goal down, we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract with yourself, they are harder to neglect to forget. Also when you write your goals
14、 in a particular fashion, you are able to stimulate your subconscious to be continuously alert to situation that will further your goal. Key Factors to Success No adult, everyone wishes to be successful in life. In discussing this, three fundamental principles should be born in mind: diligence, devo
15、tion, and persistence. The first key factor to success is diligence, which simply means no waste of time. Diligence can help us remind ignorance, which simply means no waste of time. Diligence can help us remove ignorance and overcome difficulties. Diligence can make a fool wise, and a poor man rich
16、. If we idle away our time now, our future life will be a failure. If we are diligent now, we will surely be successful in future. Devotion, which means concentration of our mind and effect in doing things, is another key factor to success. Whatever job we are doing, we must love it and do it whole-
17、heartedly. Only when we set our minds on the job can we do it well. Furthermore, perseverance or a strong will, is also necessary in order to make success a certainty. If we study or work day after day there is nothing that cannot be achieved. Without a strong will, on the other hand, we are likely
18、to give up when we are confronted with some difficulties. To conclude, all great men achieve success through diligence, devotion, and perseverance. Just as the famous English saying goes, “No pains, No gains.” Pain Past Is Pleasure That was the situation until a couple of years later, when I was off
19、ered an opportunity to study English through an online course. The communication medium was a computer, phone line, and modem. I soon got access to the necessary equipment, learned the technology from a friend and participated in the virtual classroom 5 to 7 days a week. Online learning is not easie
20、r than regular classroom study; it requires much time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course. I worked hard to meet the minimum standards set by the course and to complete assignments on time. I practiced all the time. I carried a little dictionary with me everywhere I wen
21、t, as well, as a notebook in which I listed any new words I heard. I made many, sometimes embarrassing, mistakes. Once in a while I cried with frustration, and sometimes I felt like giving up. But I didn t feel intimidated by students who spoke faster than I did because I took all the time I needed
22、to think out my ideas and write a reply before posting it on the screen. Then, one day I realized I could understand just about everything I came across, and most importantly, I could “say”anything I wanted to in English. Although I still made many mistakes and was continually learning, I had finall
23、y reaped the benefits of all that hard work. Learning a foreign language has been a most trying experience for me, but one that I wouldn t trade for anything. Not only did learning another language teach me the value of hard work, but it also gave me insights into another culture, and my mind was op
24、ened to new ways of seeing things. The most wonderful result of having learned a foreign language was that I could communicate with many more people than before. Talking with people is one of my favorite activities, so being able to speak a new language lets me meet new people, participate in conver
25、sations, and form new, unforgettable friendships. Now that I speak a foreign language, instead of staring into space when English is being spoken, Ican participate and make friends. I am able to reach out to others and bridge the gap between my language and culture and theirs. June 15,2002 Dear Pres
