Cultural Conflicts: Each nation has its own conventions. Different nations have differe nt cultures. Whe n two cultures clash, problems in

In fact, knowing and un dersta nding the others culture is the resp on sibility of both sides, and both sides should be willi ng to compromise. 22、of gold.寸金难买寸光阴。III Text Structure AnalysisThe essay centers on the topic how American culture is different from other cultures in their treatme nt of time. It is an expository writi ng in that the writer tells us how America ns treat time as if it were someth ing almost real and what the cultural d

23、iffere nee is.The essay can be roughly divided into three parts.This is a piece of expositi on. The writer begi ns the essay with an in troducti on, which tells us what integrity means. Then the writer puts forward the problem that integrity is in short supply today and getting scarcer.This naturall

24、y leads to the questi on of how to test whether one has the value of in tegrity or not. Three prin ciples with examples or with expla nati ons are prese nted one by one. Thus the essay leads to its con clusi on about in tegrity. From this an alysis it can be see n that the writer uses the writing te

25、chnique called a general statementfollowed and supported by examples. Besides, the writer also uses different writing skills such as exemplification, figurati on and quotati on. All these tech niq ues make the essay convincing and vivid.The passage can be roughly divided into 3 parts.Part One (Paras

26、. 1-2)It tells us that Americans treasure two elements: time and labor and their reasonsParagraph 1 tells us that America ns treasure two eleme nts: time and labor. Paragraph 2 drops the topic of labor and starts to focus on the topic of time: Time is a precious resource. Many people have a rather a

27、cute senseof the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a pers ons hourglass, they cannot be replaced. Every min ute coun ts.Part Two (Paras. 3-7)It mainly tells us how Americans treat time. Paragraph3 is about America ns daily life which shows how every America n does things in

28、a rush un der the pressure of time. The reas on is that people value time highly, and they rese nt some one else wasting it beyond a certain appropriate point. Paragraph 4 is about one important aspect of America n life: doing bus in ess. America ns prefer to start talk ing bus in ess very quickly a

29、nd assess their bus in ess part ners professi on ally rather tha n socially. To America ns, time is always tick ing away in their ears. Paragraphs 5 to 7 are about how America ns save their time through labor-sav ing and time-sav ing devices. They use faxes, phone calls or emails to do all kinds of

30、thi ngs, in clud ing settli ng n ati onal or intern ati onal problems. To America ns, the impers on ality of electro nic com muni cati on has little or no relati on to the sig nifica nee of the matter at hand.Part Three (Para. 8)It brings out the cultural difference between America and other nations

People from other cultures might thi nk that it is impolite to work too quickly and that tasks are give n added weight by the passage of time while America ns believe that it is a sig n of skillfu In ess or being compete nt to solve a problem, or fulfill a job successfully, with speed. The purpose

32、 of putt ing more capital, en ergy, and atte nti on into some importa nt tasks does not mean to spe nd more time but to get the tasks movi ng with the shortest possible time.IV. Structured WritingA Paragraph of a General Statement Supported by Specific DetailsIn the passage,the writer presents his s

33、tatementsfirst and goes on to support his stateme nts with specific details. The n the writer briefly tells us the reas on.Take paragraphs 3 for an example.In Paragraph 3 we have the gen eral stateme nt: Every one is in a rush more ofte n under pressure. To support the statement, the writer tries to

34、 bring out details from differe nt aspects to prove how every one is in a rush: shopp ing in a rush, tak ing meals in a rush, driv ing in a rush, no brief excha nges with stra ngers, etc.(Turn to P. 15 and do Exercise XIII . Now fill in the same kind of chart for Paragraph 7, iden tify ing a gen era
