3、l start at 2:45, and finish about 5:30.OK, tha nks.门I make sure I get there early to get s good spot.The festival will be officially opened by the mayor.Hell just speak for a few minu tes, welcomi ng every one to the festival.All the tow n coun cillors will be there, and of course lots of other peop

4、le. Right.Then therell be a performa nee by a band.Most years we have a childre ns choir, but this year the local army cadets offered to perform, and theyre very good. Uhuh.After that, a com mun ity group from the tow n will perform a play theyve writte n themselves, just a short one.Its about Hele

5、n Tun gate. I dont know if youve heard of her.I certa inly have. She was a scie ntist years ago.Thats right. She was born in Kenton exactly 100 years ago, so were celebrati ng her centen ary.Im a biologist, so Ive always bee n in terested in her. I did nt realise she came from Kenton.Yes. Well, all

6、that will take place in the after noon, and later, as the sun sets, therell be a firework display.You should go to the park to watch, as youll get the best view from there, and the display takes place on the opposite side of the river.Its always one of the most popular events in the festival.Sounds

7、great.And whats happe ning on the other days?There are several eve nts that go on the whole time.For example, the stude nts of the art college have produced a nu mber of videos, all conn ected with relati on ships betwee n childre n and their gran dpare nts.That sounds in teresti ng. Because the art college is in use for classes, throughout the festival, the videos are being show n in Han dsworth House.How do you spell the n ame?H-A-N-D-S-W-O-R-T-H.Ha ndsworth House. 10、ket in the town centre - the outdoor one, not the covered market.And its on at 2 and 5 every after noon of the festival, apart from the first day.Lovely. 13、ve now almost succeeded in finalising plans for our tour, so Ill bring you up todate with what I know.As you know, were flyi ng first to Muni ch, on Mon day the 4th.The flight is at 11:30, so its too early to have lunch at the airport.I suggest we meet there for coffee at 10, which should give us pl

14、enty of time forbreakfast before we leave home.Whe n we arrive in Mun ich, well be met at the airport by Claus Bauer.Claus works for a tour operator, and hell look after us for the time well be inGerma ny.Hes already liaised with the managers of the theatres were going to visit,and hes also arranged

15、 for an officer of the National Theatre in Munich to show us round the theatre one after noon duri ng our stay.Now last time we discussed this trip, I did nt have the precise cost for hotel rooms, but now I have.The normal rate at the hotel where were staying is 150 euros a night for a double room.I

16、d hoped to get that down to 120 euros, but in fact Ive been able to negotiate a rate of 110.Thatll be reflected in the final payme nt which youll n eed to make by the end of this week. On Tuesday, the day after our arrival, I had hoped we could sit in on a rehearsal at one of the theatres,but unfort

17、un ately thats proved very difficult to arran ge,so in stead well have a coach trip to one of the amaz ing castles in the mountains south of Muni ch.On Tuesday eve ning, well all have dinner together in a restaura nt n ear our hotel.From talk ing to you all about your prefere nces, it was clear that

18、 a typical local restaura nt would be too meat-orie nted for some of you.Some of you suggested an Italia n restaura nt, but I must con fess that I decided to book Leba nese one,as we have ple nty of opport un ities to go to an Italia n restaura nt at home.On Wedn esday after noon the director of the

19、 play were going to see that eve ning will talk to us at the theatre.Shell describe the whole process of produci ng a play, in clud ing how she chose the actors,and, as the play were going to see is a modern one, how she worked with the playwright.IRight. Now Id just like to make a few points about

20、the plays were going to see,partly because it might in flue nce your choice of clothes to take with you.The play were see ing on Wedn esday eve ning is a moder n one, and were going to the premiere,so itll be quite a dressy occasi on, though of course you dont have to dress formally.I gather its rat

21、her a multimedia production, with amazing lighting effects and a soun dtrack of electro nic music,though unfortunately the playwright is ill and is uniikely to be able to attend.On Thursday were see ing a play that was first performed last year,when it was commissioned to mark a hundred years since

22、the birth in the town of a well-k nown scie ntist.Were going to see a revival of that production, which aroused a lot of interest.Fridays play will really make you think hard about what clothes to pack, as itll be in the garde n of a palace.Its a beautiful setting, but Id better warn you, there wont

23、 be much protection from the wind.On Saturday were going by coach to a theatre in ano ther tow n, not far from Muni ch.This will be the ope ning of a drama festival, and the mayor and all the other dignitaries of the town will be attending.After the performanee, the mayor is hosting a reception for

24、all the audienee,and therell be a band play ing traditi onal music of the regi on.And after hav ing a day off on Sun day, our final play is on Mon day,and its in the stunning sett ing of the old Town Hall, which dates back to the 14th cen tury.The performa nee marks the fifty years that the lead act

25、or has bee n on stage, and the play is the one where he made his first professi onal appeara nee, all those years ago.And the day after that, well be flying back home. 31、g at the mome nt will be replaced by more specialised courses.Oh, and by the way, if youre interested in watching Danish television programmes theres going to be a course on that the term after next.That sounds good.Have you started thi nking about the literature paper that you have to write in the

32、n ext few weeks?Yes, my first choice would be to do something on the Icelandic sagas.Hmm. The trouble with that is that a lot of people choose that topic, and it can be difficult to get hold of the books youll n eed.Why no t leave that for ano ther time? Right.You might find modern novels or 19th ce

33、ntury playwrights interesting.rve read or see n several plays in tran slatio n, so that would be a good idea.Fine.门I put you dow n for that topic.Right. So what would you advise me to aim at in the paper?First I suggest you avoid tak ing one writer and going into a great deal of detail.That approach

34、 certa inly has its place, but I thi nk you first n eed to get anun dersta nding of the literature in the con text of the society in which it was produced who it was written for, how it was published, and so on.I also think thats more fruitful than placing it within the history of the genre.OK, that

Have you decided yet what to write about?No, I have nt. Theres so much that seems in terest ing - Viking settleme nt in other coun

36、 tries, trade, mythology.Well, what I suggest is that you read an assig nment a stude nt wrote last year, which is kept in the library.Its short and well focused, and Im sure youll find it helpful.Ill give you the details in a moment.Textbooks usually cover so many topics, it can be very difficult t

37、o choose just one. OK.Ive got a DVD of the film about the Vikings that came out earlier this year.Should I watch that aga in?If its the one I am thinking of, hmm, Id ignore it - its more fan tasy tha n reality.But Ive got a recording of a documentary that you should watch.It makes some interesting a

38、nd provocative points, which I think will help you to focus your topic. Right. So the n should I work out an outl ine?Yes. Just head ings for differe nt secti ons at this stage.And the n you should start look ing for suitable articles and books to draw on, and take no tes which you orga nise accord

39、ing to those head in gs.I see. Then put short phrases and senten ces as bullet points un der each head ing.Make sure that this skeleton makes sense and flows properly, before writing up the paper in full. OK. 40、rs have cha nged con siderably.After all, there was a time when workers had no rights at all, and laboured in appalling_Lcon diti ons.Con diti ons have improved a lot, but con flict in the workplace is still com mon.And huma n resources man agers no wadays n eed to be able to deal with it whe nn ece

41、ssary.What is con flict in the workplace?Definitions vary, but Im taking it to refer to a whole range of behaviours that the victim finds un acceptable,from minor, harmless arguments to - at the opposite extreme - physical violenee.Much of this is covered by the term bullyi ng,by which I mean one or

42、 more people behav ing abusively or aggressively aga inst ano ther who is in a weaker positi on.Although all behaviour like this is a form of conflict, not all conflict can be described in these terms. As with all human behaviour, there are numerous reasons for it.But ofte n its caused by some one w

43、ho feels the n eed to show their superiority over some one else, in order to, feel that they arent at the lowest level in a hierarchy or a group of people.In some cases one pers on simply dislike the other on the basisthat the pers on ality of one is in some way in compatible with that of the other

44、pers on.A general habit of optimism in one person could make them intolerant of a colleague whos con sta ntly pessimisticnot that that justifies treating them badly, of course.Some con flicts arise whe n people are more in terested in promoti ng themselves and their team than in the company as a who

45、le.These con flicts are called structura l and could come about, for example,whe n a sales team believe they are the only people in the bus in ess who do any useful work, and look dow n on beh in d-the-sce nes adm ini strators.Conflict obviously affects the individuals concerned - the situation is l

46、ikely to be very stressful for victims,result in their abse nee from work, possibly for mon ths.For the company, if no effort is made to deal with conflict, it can spiral out of control, and eve n lead to the breakdow n of the bus in ess.Some in terest ing work with chief executives - CEOs - has un

47、covered some of theIreas ons why they may treat colleagues badly.Many CEOs comb ine two oppos ing characteristics: con fide nce - that is, the belief thatitheyre capable of great achieveme nts with a high level of an xiety, a fear of miss ingitargets, whether set by themselves or by the directors of the compa ny.This comb in atio n can make them resp ond badly to anyone who questi ons their decisi ons.In a high pressure work en vir onment, such characteristics become problematic.And its
