5、 confidence in me all through these years.AbstractThe Joy Luck Club is written by Amy Tan, a famous Chinese American writer. In this novel she mainly describes the complicated relationship between four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters. The thesis tries to analyze the mothe

6、r-daughter relationship in detail by presenting the cultural conflicts and blending. The author holds the idea that these conflicts between them are just the reflection of the cultural conflicts. Therefore, by analyzing the mother-daughter conflicts we can clearly find the cultural conflicts hidden

7、behind this relationship and have a discussion of the possibility and inevitability of the coexistence of different cultures.The thesis is pided into four chapters. In Chapter one, the writer makes a brief introduction to the research background, Amy Tan and The Joy Luck Club. In Chapter two, the wr

8、iter analyzes the conflicts and blending which exist in the Mother-Daughter relationships in detail. In The Joy Luck Club, different manners on expressions and different understanding on personal value and cultures make the conflicts happen. And the cultural concord is mainly represented by maternal

9、 love and daughters’ consciousness of racial and cultural identity. In Chapter three, a detailed analysis is made to explain the reasons why there exists so disharmonious relationship between mothers and daughters, and how the Chinese culture and Western culture reconnect with each other at la

She graduated from high school in Switzerla

12、nd, and received her masters degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University. She was surrounded by influences from both Chinese and American cultures all her life. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. In 1949, they left China for the United States, and both of them had unusual backgrou

13、nd which later provided Tan a lot of writing materials.Amy Tan started to get an intense interest in writing novels since 1985. She participated in a writer-training camp and soon some short stories of hers were published. The Joy Luck Club was written in 1987 after she took her mother to China to s

14、ee the daughters who have been forced to leave their mother forty years ago. This trip was a revelation for Tan, and it also gave her a new perspective of the relationship between her and her mother.Amy Tan, categorized as one of the most prominent Asian American writers, till now has written severa

15、l books, including The Kitchen Gods Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, Saving Fish from Drowning, etc. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. Among of them, The Joy Luck Club is the most successful one, it is a masterpiece in Chinese-American literature. Although a lot of resear

16、ch has been done on the theme of mother-daughter relationship, culture conflicts and concord, Chinese-American’s identity, feminist perspective, racism and narrative strategy, there is no doubt that mother-daughter relationship, the unique cultural elements and the conflicts and concord betwee

17、n China and America are the key elements attracting readers, to which critics have paid enough attention. Through detailed analysis of these two key elements in this thesis, we can understand Amy Tan and her novel The Joy Luck Club much better.2 Mother-Daughter relationships in The Joy Luck ClubThe

18、focus of The Joy Luck Club is surely on the relationship between the immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters. Although these four mothers have terrible experiences in China, they still love their motherland and cherish their Chinese identities and values. In addition, they try hard to de

19、liver the Chinese heritage to their daughters and want them to have Chinese values as well. On the contrary, the daughters are not interested in the past and their mothers’ teaching. Gradually, the generational gap turned into conflicts. But as time goes by, the daughters begin to understand a

20、nd appreciate their mothers’ past and accept their mothers in the end. In fact, it is just the maternal love The Joy Luck Club mothers give to their daughters that finally makes their daughters understand them and also the Chinese culture which they stand for.In The Cultural Significance of th

21、e Mother Image and the Mother-Daughter Relationship in Amy Tans Novels ,Cheng Ai-min indicates that “by artistically telling the stories of the Chinese mothers, Tan successfully creates the mother image” (2001:113). He concludes the image of the mother as “the carrier of Chinese cu

22、lture and tradition, the medium of history and memory, and the bridge of past and present” (2001:113). Therefore, the mother-daughter relationship implicates the conflicts and blending between Chinese and American culture. And then, the thesis will mainly talk about how these conflicts and con

23、cords between mothers and daughters presented in this novel. When people from the high-context culture and low-context culture live together, conflicts immediately appear. It can be seen in the conversation of June and her mother Suyuan,“My mother and I never really understood one another. We

24、translated each other’s meanings and i seemed to hear less than what was said while my mother heard more.” (Tan,1989: 27) .June looks for the meaning in what is stated and does not know that her mother does not point out important information because Suyuan thinks her daughter should hav

25、e known it; Suyuan, on the other hand, likes telling stories to her daughter, expecting her to get the meanings of her implications.The difference on the expressing manners, is decided by the characteristics of the low-context and the high-context cultures. And it leads to the misunderstanding and c

26、onflicts.2.1.2 Conflicts with Personal ValueIn The Joy Luck Club, another conflict is the different understanding on personal value. No matter why four mothers in the novel immigrated to the United States, their personal value and ways of cultivating children are deeply and totally affected by the early experiences in Old China.
