atemperature is measured by means of a thermometer (温度计). one general form of thermometer depends upon the fact that most solids and liquids expand as their temperature rises. there are one or two exceptions. there is, for instance, a kind of steel called invar (from “invariable”) which does not change its dimensions as temperature changes; it is valuable for making pendulums (钟摆), since, if the length of a pendulum changes, its time of vibration changes. it is also used for making very accurate measuring scales. in both cases, then, changes of atmospheric temperature have no effect if invar is used. another exception is that very odd liquid, water, which has many strange properties (特性). as water gets colder it contracts (收缩), which is ordinary behavior, until it reaches the temperature of 30. above freezing point. after that, as it gets colder, it expands. this is fortunate-for considering the freezing of a pond. as the water on top gets colder, it shrinks; and so, volume for volume, it becomes heavier and sinks. this goes on until all the pond is at 30, but after that, as the water becomes colder it expands. therefore the colder water stays on top and freezes, covering the pond with ice. if the water went on contracting down to the freezing point, the pond would become a solid block of ice in the end. this would not worry people who live in hot climates, but it would be very serious for those who live in cold climates, especially for those who want to break the ice and catch fish which live in the cold water beneath.1. invar is valuable for making pendulums because _.a. it can hardly change its shape or size as temperature changes. b. it will change its dimensions without the change of temperature.c. its time of vibration doesnt change if its length changes. d. its time of vibration does change if its length changes.2. as water gets colder after reaching the temperature of 30. it will _.a. contract b. shrink c. expand d. freeze3. which of the following statements is true, according to this passage?a. only invar can be used to make a thermometer. b. only water can be used to make a thermometer.c. both invar and water can be used to make a thermometer. d. neither invar nor water can be used to make a thermometer. 4. the best title of this passage is most likely to be _.a. temperature measurement b. two exceptionsc. uses of invar d. properties of water【参考答案】(a) acdb 【2013界广东省韶关市】-dacross the planet there are millions of people who engage in some type of meditation, the practice of concentrating and clearing the mind to bring the body into a state of peace, at least a semi-regular basis. for some, particularly among practitioners of eastern religions such as buddhism and hinduism, this is part and parcel of their religious practice. for others, particularly in western cultures, meditation tends to be a response to stress. with the world economy approaching meltdown and people worried about their job or their ability to keep their home, its a way for people to attain a state of peace of mind and well-being. for those interested in taking up the practice, instruction in meditation for beginners can be found in literally thousands of sources. ww w.x kb1.c omone of the most popular styles of mediation in the west, with classes offered in most major cities, is called transcendental meditation. tm, as it is known among its practitioners, first came to worldwide attention when the beatles began practicing it in 1967. for direct, guided, personal instruction in meditation for the beginner, tm may be the hallmark. part of the confusion about how to practice meditation effectively is due to the fact that there are literally hundreds of techniques championed by various groups and individuals. as a general principle, it might be said that all meditation techniques seek to have the practitioner attain a state of consciousness that is different to our ordinary state of awareness. they attempt to train people to clear their minds and achieve a sense of inner peace. it sounds simple enough, but of the huge number of people experiment with meditation, very few are able to maintain its practice over the long haul. in most cases, this is due to frustration over the inability to experience any dramatic, instantly recognizable effects. this is quite a sad state of affairs, that so few these days are willing or equipped to persist in something that doesnt provide immediate life-changing results. it reflects a culture in which demands for discipline and sustained effort are considered unnecessary or even unfair. it is no surprise therefore that many people abandon their efforts at meditation before they have a chance to bear fruit. but for anyone who does decide to take up this worthwhile practice, please remember. you must clear your mind, relax and “take it as it comes”. maintain the practice with a sense of discipline and devotion, and eventually benefits of inner peace and calm will be yours. 41. the underlined part “part and parcel of” in paragraph 1 is nearest in meaning to _. a. closely associated with b. very different to c. usually sent from d. an important
