Part IReading ComprehensionDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Time passed and my cards sold well. My enthusiasm for the greeting card business grew quickly. All along, I had been drawing fantasy art: clowns (丑角), dragons, castles, etc. With the birth of my first son in 1980, the content of my work underwent (经历) a pretty dramatic change. Fantasy went out of the window, and I began to illustrate(表现)reality. In the spring of 1983, we, The Mary Engelbreit Greeting Card Company, took our 12 little designs to New York to exhibit them at the National Stationery (文具) Show. I remember how big the show was. I just couldnt get over it. I had no idea there were so many different card companies. And it was exciting because our 12 little cards were getting a lot of attention in that huge place! Ive been told one of the reasons we had so much success at that show is because my card style was different than anything else at the market. I typically draw complicated details and use deep colors and amusing or profound (深刻的) quotations. By 1985, many greeting card publishers started noticing my art, and two of them approached me with licensing contracts that I was expecting. I have always believed if you choose a job you love, youll never work a day in your life. If you ask about the mystery of my success, all I can say is this: to imagine is everything! 1. Before the birth of her first son, Mary Engelbreits cards focused on _.A. realityB. daily lifeC. fantasyD. dragons2. The New York show was so big that Engelbreit _.A. couldnt walk through itB. couldnt believe itC. couldnt stay to the end of itD. couldnt understand it3. According to Mary Engelbreit, the key to success is _.A. devotionB. opportunityC. good luckD. imaginationPassage 2Throughout my childhood, I rarely heard about any kind of crime.Obviously I was going to have to behave (表现) a little bit differently in this new environment. Because of St. Ignatiuss view as an essential part of the community, people could not exactly be banned from walking around the campus during the day. This meant that I would sometimes see homeless people begging for money as I ran from class to class. One day I ran into someone begging on the corner near school. I decided to give the homeless person a dollar. At the time I saw no reason in my teachers warnings. For the next week straight, this man waited for me at the same place in the hopes that I would give him more money. He hassled me every day until I finally told him that I was not going to give him anything else. Because this may have been an unusual case, I did not want to make any conclusions about homeless people. However, I did learn from this experience that I should probably listen to my teachers more often on issues such as this one.Students lives become enriched simply by attending an inner-city school. For someone who had lived in the suburbs all his life, such as me, a new style of living can be experienced. If St. Ignatius High School were not in the middle of Cleveland, I would not have had so many opportunities to grow and mature(成熟)as a person. Going to school in the city helped me to overcome the childish views I once had, and I am now better prepared to take on the challenges which await me in life. (282 words) 1.Why did people there walk around the campus during the day?A. Because the local people came to learn here.B. Because his school was viewed as an essential part of the community. C. The curriculum of St. IgnatiusC. His life experience at St. IgnatiusD. His religious beliefPassage 3The next great land area that man hopes to colonize(殖民,开拓)is the moon. In size it is nearly equal to the area of North and South Americas. However, it presents a hostile(不友好的)environment. Temperatures range form +120 to -150 degrees Centigrade. There is no air, no water.Today there is considerable scientific speculation(推测)about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the lunar surface is still not determined. But experts believe that colonization will take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters. These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the colonizers themselves. Finally, colonies that are self-supporting will be established. The principal job of the early settlers will be to stay alive. They will have to plant crops under huge domes(圆顶)to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial development and to make discoveries important to science. The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human survival may make it ideal for certain kinds of manufacturing. Operations requiring a vacuum(真空), extreme cold, or sterility(无菌状态)are examples. Precision ball bearings, industrial diamonds or pharmaceuticals(药品)might be produced on the moon.1. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion (反叛). It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly(大胆地)on their own, most of them are clutching(抓)at one anothers hands for reassurance (放心). They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting thus-and-so is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity(流行)wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out (创建)a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you dont care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. Thats the only kind of popularity that really counts. 1. George liked his job and he liked the town he lived in, but his wife kept telling him that his pay was not enough to meet the needs of the family. That was why he was thinking of taking a job in Birmingham, a nearby city about 50 miles away. He really liked the place and didnt like the idea of moving somewhere else, but if he took the job in Birmingham, he would have to move his family there.Henry Manley was the manager of a small company manufacturing electric motors. Otherwise he would not get any orders at all. Even then, orders were still not coming in fast enough, so that there was no money for raises (加工资) for his workers. Somehow, he had to struggle along and keep his best workers as well. He sighed. Just then the phone rang. His secretary told him that George Strong wanted to see him as soon as possible.
