Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area2008-11-16 9:40:58 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Situated in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, it has an area of 700km2, and is like a giant golden dragon stretching down, being famous for its colorful pools, snow-clad mountains, forests, gorges and waterfalls. Its main landscapes are concentrated within the Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Valley that is about 3.6km long, and there are calcium carbonate travertine covering all over the valley in a terraced-field arrangement, to enjoy reputation in the world with its abundant flora and fauna resources, being reputed as “World Wonderful Sight” and “Fairyland on Earth”. There are also giant pandas, golden monkeys, twisted horn gazelles and other rare and precious animals, being natural protection reserves for the giant pandas and golden monkeys. Among them the shortest linear distance between Lancangjiang River and Jinshajiang River is only 66km, while the shortest linear distance between Lancangjiang River and Nujiang River is less than 19km.5Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries-Wolong, Mt. Siguniang and Jiajin Mountains2008-11-16 9:37:07 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: The world natural heritage of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries includes the Wolong, Siguniang and Jiajin mountains with a total area of 9,245km2, and covers 4 cities and prefectures as well as 12 counties of Chengdu, Aba, Yaan and Ganzi. Living in the place here are over 30% of the wild giant pandas of the world, the largest and most integral habitat of giant pandas, and also one of the regions with richest plant species except the tropical rainforest. Once selected by the Nature Protection International as one of the 25 global bio-diversification popular attractions, it was determined by the Global Environmental Protection Organization as one of the global 200 ecological regions. In July 2006, it was inscribed in the “World Heritage List” as a world natural heritage.6South China Karst2008-11-16 9:35:07 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: The “South China Karst” is jointly composed by the sword-shaped, pillar-shaped and pagoda-shaped karsts of Yunnan Stone Forests, the cone-shaped karsts (peak forest) in Libo of Guizhou and the stereoscopic karsts with nature-created bridge, geo-crevice and heavenly pit groups as their representatives, which were formed from 500,000 years to 300 million years ago and in a total area of 1,460km2. The scenic attractions in these regions enjoy reputation both at home and abroad, e.g. the Stone Forest of Yunnan has been famous for its being “imposing, queer, perilous, elegant, serene, profound and spacious” and hence is reputed as “No. 1 Spectacle Under Heaven” and “Cream of World Karsts”; the Libo of Guizhou is a habitat of national minorities of Buyi, Shui, Miao, Yao, etc., and was elected the “most beautiful place in China” and the “ten most beautiful great forests in China”. They were included in the “World Heritage List” as a world natural heritage in June 2007.7Mount Sanqingshan National Park2008-11-16 9:33:35 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: In July 2008 it was put in the “World Heritage List” as a world natural heritage. Speaking highly of the Mount Sanqing (Pure Trinity) National Park, Jinagxi, the World Heritage Committee holds that it creates a world-unique landscape aesthetic effect by demonstrating its own special granite pillars and peaks and through the combination of abundant granite molding stones and multiple vegetations with the far and near changing landscapes and heart-shaking climate wonder within a relatively small region, to present an attractive nature . World Culture Landscape8 Lushan National Park2008-11-16 9:45:32 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Rising south of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province in Central China and close to the Yangtze River in the north and by Poyang Lake in the east, Mt Lushan has a total mountain-body area of 302km2 in a south-north long and east-west narrow shape. The whole mountain has more than 90 peaks in total, and the highest one is the Greater Hanyang Peak, which thrusts itself 1,473.4m high above sea level. Distributed among the peaks are gorges, crag caves, waterfalls and creeks, and their land forms and topography are complicated and diversified. The scenic sight of Mt Lushan is well-known in the world for its peculiarity, elegance, danger and grandeur, having ever-since being of the repute of “Kuan Lu (Kuan Yus hut, an alternative name of Mt Lushan) ranks first under heaven thanks to its peculiarity and elegance”. Now there are mainly 12 scenic areas, 37 scenic sites and 230 view landscapes. Mt Lushan has long been said to be the “hut of celestial beings”, and the vapor shrouded river and lake enable Mt Lushan to be cool in summer days with abundant rainfall and mist-cloud that spreads all over. The annual foggy days of Mt Lushan average to 191, and the spreading mists and clouds add much charming elegance and mysterious color to Mt Lushan. Mt Lushan is an ages-long famous mountain that integrates its scenic, cultural, religious, educational and political contents in its one combination. Cultural & Natural Heritage9 Mount Wuyi2008-11-16 9:43:47 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Towering in the southern suburbs of Wuyishan City, Fujian Province, it is a low mountain structured of red sandstone with an elevation of some 600m, being a concentration place of karst topographic landscape. There are thirty-six peaks, ninety-nine crags, Nine-bend Stream, Peach Blossom Fairland Cave, Flowing Fragrance Creek, Recumbent Dragon Pond, Dragon Howling Crag and other scenic spots as well as Chongyou Myriad Year Palace (Wuyi Palace), former address of Ziyang Academy of Classical Learning (Wuyi Fine Study) and inscriptions of successive dynasties on precipices. The Wuyishan State Key Natural Reserve is built in the bordering place among the three cities of Jianyang, Wuyishan and Guangze, and has been included in the international “Man and Biosphere” natural reserve network. The mountain was put in the “World Natural and Cultural Heritage List” in 1999.10 Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area2008-11-16 9:43:18 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Standing southwest of Emeishan City, Sichuan Province, Mt Emei, an elevation of 3,099m, has been reputed as “Emeis being elegant under heaven”. Said to be the site of Bodhisattva of Universal Benevolence to expound the texts of Buddhism, the place saw Buddhism flourishing with each passing day in the period of Tang and Song, with Buddhist monasteries and palaces covering every mountain here; there are over a hundred Buddhist niches and 40 caves, and moreover there are Wannian (Myriad Year) Temple, Baoguo (Serving the Country Worthily) Temple, Hongchun Plateau Qianfo (Thousand Buddha) Buddhist Monastery, Elephant Washing Pond, Gold Summit Huacang (Lotus Flower Sutra) Temple and other historic interest sites. Seated against riverside cliff of Qiluan (Phoenix Birching) Peak of Lingyun (Soaring to the Clouds) Mountain southeast of Leshan City, Sichuan Province, the Leshan Giant Buddha was completed from the first year of the Kaiyuan Period (713) to the nineteenth year of the Zhenyuan Period (803) of the Tang Dynasty, and has its head on a level with the mountain summit and its feet stepping on the river in a total height of 71m and shoulder width of 24m, hence its another name of Lingyun (Soaring to the Clouds) Giant Buddha, being the largest stone Buddha statue in the world. In 1996, it was inscribed in the “World Cultural and Natural Heritage List”.11Mount Huangshan2008-11-16 9:42:46 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: The bounded scope of the Huangshan Scenic and Historic Area totals 154km2, with its outlying protected belt amounting to 142km2; the peak forest inside the area is of a unique topography, and every peak is dangerously steep and loftily towering, which, matched with unpredictably changing mists and clouds, enables the natural beautiful scenery to change unendingly, and to structure its queer, grand, ever-changing and perilous spectacles. With 400-plus scenic sites inside the scenic area, it is well-known at home and abroad for its four “matchless” of queer pines, strange rocks, cloud sea and hot spring, being reputed as “No. 1 wonderful mountain under heaven”, In 1990, it was included in the “World Cultural Heritage List”.12Mount Taishan2008-11-16 9:42:20 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Towering in Taian City, Shandong Province, called Dongyue (East Sacred Mountain) in ancient times by the alternative names of Mt. Daishan and Mt. Daizong, stretches and undulates for approx 200km. Rising 1,532m above sea level, its main peak Yuhuangding (Jade Emperor Summit) thrusts itself towards the sky, being magnificent and majestic. From foot to top of the mountain, there are over 30 scenic and historic attractions, such as Wangmu (Western Queen Mother) Pond, Doumu (Mother of the Dipper Stars) Palace, Jingshi (Stone with Sutra Inscription) Valley, and Hutian (World in Pot) Chamber along the central way; as well as the Heilong (Black Dragon) Pond, Shanzi (Fan) Cliff, Changshou (Longevity) Bridge, etc. along the western way. After both the central and west ways join together, it is the place called Zhongtianmen (Mid-way Heavenly Gate), then one will ascend the natural barrier of eighteen bends, and there will be the Nantianmen (South Heavenly Gate), Bixia (Azure Cloud) Temple, Zhanlu (Overlooking Shandong) Terrace and Riguan (Sun Watching) Peak. And the Riguan Peak is all the more a place of scenic interest to watch the sunrise atop it. In 1987, it was put in the “World Natural and Cultural Heritage List”.Cultural Heritage13 Fujian Tulou (2008)2008-11-13 15:13:06 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: In July 2008, the “Fujian Tulou”of China, tamped-earth tower, was officially included in the “World Heritage List” at the 32nd Session of World Heritage Conference held in Quebec, Canada. Coming into being in Song-Yuan period, the Tulou of Fujian became mature in the period of late Ming as well as Qing Dynasty and Republic of China. The oldest and youngest Tulou among those included in the world heritages are both in the Chuxi Tulou group, with the 66m-diameter Jiqing Tulou being at an “advanced age” of 600 years and the 31m-diameter Shanqing Tulou having a history of only 30 years.14Kaiping Diaolou and Villages (2007)2008-11-13 15:12:31 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: With an earliest history dating back to late Ming and early Qing, the Kaiping Diaolou entered an unprecedented flourishing period in 20s-30s of 20th century along with a great number of overseas Chineses coming back to buy real estate. The Diaolous numbered more than 3,000 in their heyday, with still 1,833 of them preserved perfectly up to now. In June 2007 the 31st Session of World Heritage Conference adopted the inclusion of the “Kaiping Diaolou and Villages” of China in the World Cultural Heritage List.15Yin Xu (2006)2008-11-13 15:11:55 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: Yin Xu (Ruins of Yin Dynasty), the ruins of Shang Dynasty in Chinas Anyang, covers a land of approx 24km2, and is located around Xiaotun Village northwest of Anyang City, Henan Province, with a history of over 3,300 years. A capital city ruins of late Shang Dynasty of China that is famous both at home and abroad, the Yin Xu Site is the earliest capital city ruins in Chinese history that has literature for verification and has been proved by the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells and the archeological excavations. On July 13th, 2006, the inclusion of Yin Xu Site, Anyang, China in the World Cultural Heritage List was adopted by the 30th Session of World Heritage Conference.16Historic Centre of Macao (2005)2008-11-13 15:11:21 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: With the old city as its center, the “Historic Center of Macao” clusters more than 20 historic buildings through its neighboring plazas and streets. As an only item for China to apply for its becoming a world cultural heritage item in 2005, the “Historic Center of Macao” is approved to be included in the World Heritage List on the 29th Session of World Heritage Conference. The boundary of the historic center starts from the Wangyang (Sea Overlooking) Hill in the east, arrives at Xinmalu (New Highway) Road close to the Internal Port Pier in the west, starts from Mage (Mazu Chamber) Hill in the south and arrives at White Dove Nest Park in the north, being the most ancient, largest-scale, most integrally preserved and most concentrated historic city center with buildings of both Chinese and Western features in coexistence, and being the crystallization of the Chinese-Western cultural exchange and multi-element coexistence more than 400 years.17Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom (2004)2008-11-13 15:10:43 Font Size:LMS Select blackround-color: On July 1st, 2004, news from the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Conference held in Suzhou, China says that the “Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom in China”, main body located in Jian City, Jilin Province, has succeeded in applying for being included in the World Cultural Heritage List, thus the items of our country in the World Heritage List have increased to 30 pieces. The reasons for the places being included in the list are: the architectural art being superb, being worthy to be called the model for the technology of the same time; the artistic achievements being outstanding, especially the frescos inside the tombs being able to embody the exquisite artistic level; and the civilization connotation being rich in characteristic features, a great number of the precious cultural relics being able to reflect the unique-characteristic civilization of the Koguryo Period.
