They have stood for nearly 5000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look much as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage(破坏)has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin(废墟). These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever. It is most likely that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved. But, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramid themselves. As a result, we are only able to guess at the methods used. However, one thing is certain: there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to be overcome. The pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun sets. This was for religious reasons. The pyramid also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. The pyramid could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base which was not likely to crack under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, the pyramid had to be near the capital, or better still, near the kings palace so that he could visit it easily and personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body. 51. Most of the damage to the pyramids has been caused by _.A. stonesB. riversC. weatherD. men 52. Whats the meaning of the underlined word preserve? A. Damage.B. Protect.C. Build.D. Cover. 53. What was the first thing people had to do before they could begin to build? A. To follow the rules.B. To draw the pictures.C. To choose the right place.D. To find the workers. 54. To protect a pyramid from floods they could have built it a long way from the Nile, but _.A. it had to be built on the west side of the river Nile where the sun setsB. it was difficult to find a large enough rock base so far from the riverC. this would have been impossible because of religious reasonsD. this would have made it very difficult to transport the materials(C)“Track!” said my master.Like any good tracker-dog who has received the command(命令)he most loves, I gave a bark of excitement, put my nose down to the ground and sniffed. The ground was rich with smells. Even in the high-class housing area where we were working, the stones held traces of many sofe and confusing scents (smells). As I searched for the scent that would give me a clue to the tail of the guilty man, my tail wagged slowly, thoughtfully, delightedly. Work was like play to me; I enjoyed it.A small group of people gathered behind us. Among these onlookers was the old caretaker of the building next door to ours. He spoke in a scornful voice, “You actually think your dog might catch a thief three days after the event?” My master said nothing, but Im sure he must have smiled. I did not turn to look. I knew he would not speak unless it was to give me a new command.I needed to concentrate. My task was difficult. I had to pick out one scent among the many that lay about and then tracked it to its source.“Youre wasting your time,” said the caretaker. I looked at him without raising my head. He was running his hand over his fat stomach. His rough palm and smooth shirt combined to make a slight noise. It was part of my training to be awareoften it is only a little whisper of a noise that alerts(提醒)you to be drawing of a weapon. But of course the aging caretaker was going to do no such thing. There was no smell of fear or nervousness about him. He was merely being clever and talkative.“Ive seen many tracker-dogs in my time,” said the caretaker to the onlookers. “I served with the police years ago. We would never have thought of using a tracker-dog to find a car thief. Impossible. Everyone knows that dogs are useless in such matters.”In a sense he was right. Im sure theres no need to tell you that, just as a dogs hearing is much better than a human beings, so his sense of smell tells one thing from another far better than a great detective. If Sherlock Holmes could work out that a man had had an egg for breakfast by seeing the yellow stain on his mouth, a trained dog could tell you whether the hen that laid the egg was healthy or not.I know it sounds funny and I mean it to be. But Im not exaggerating. A dog can tell youif you understand a dogs way of communicatingall this and more without even setting eyes on the man he is investigating. 55. Who do you think the dog was tracking? A. The thief. B. The caretaker.C. The master.D. The onlookers. 56. How did the dog react to the command to track? A. It thought for a while and did what was asked.B. It was happy, even though it wasnt trained for the task.C. It was angry because there were so many smells.D. It was excited because it took pleasure in tracking. 57. In the dogs opinion, its sense of smell _.A. can give us fewer details about what a human has already discoveredB. can achieve more than what a humans only if the smell is not hiddenC. is particularly trained to pick out one scent among hundredsD. is better than its sense of hearing when it does tracking 58. The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold weather. They are not. They are caused by viruses(病毒)passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.If cold weather causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated Arctic regions explorers(探险者)have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with the outside world by way of packages and mails dropped from airplanes, During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches, cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starving, were extremely surprised to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in the experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on
