participating in the threeday camp offered by the arlington county fire department located just outside of washington. firefighter clare burley is in charge of the program. “the purpose is to try to get young women interested in considering the fire service as a career,” she said.the free of charge, overnight camp is designed to let the girls experience what firefighters do in the line of duty to protect the community. they take classes and learn how to climb the ladder on a fire truck, operate emergency tools and rescue an injured person. they also do their share of cleaning the firehouse and the equipment.firefighting is still a maledominated service, but burley says with 32 women on its force of 320 the arlington fire department is above the national average of 4.5 percent. she joined the department seven years ago. “women are generally weaker than men physically, but we do everything that the guys do to the same standard. we are tested to the same standard. we are expected to operate at the same standard,” she said.the girls help the crew on duty prepare for dinner. it is also part of the program. “because the kitchen is a very important part of a firefighters life. we work 24 hours together, seven days a week. we cook here, we sleep here. we usually have breakfast and dinner together. thats how we build teamwork,” said officer robert beer. most of the girls say they had never thought about becoming a firefighter, but the camp was a great learning experience. “i think it is definitely not a job that only men can do. women can do it just as well as men can,” said michelle pawlaw. “i think i can help other people if they need help and know what to do in case i am at a fire myself,” said kayla ehrlich. and, the girls say, by spending three days together, schoolchildren is nothing new. yet for young people today there is a relatively new form of bullying: cyberbullying. cyberbullying is the use of technology to threaten or harm another person. cyberbullying involves using devices like mobile phones and computers. cyberbullying can happen at any time, no matter where you are. it is very hard to avoid. sometimes cyberbullying is easy to spot for example, a child receives a text message that is harsh. other acts are less obvious, like insulting a victim online or posting personal information, photos, or videos designed to hurt another person. it is found that 22% of teenagers in the uk have suffered from cyberbullying. as more and more young people have access to computers and cell phones, the chance of cyberbullying is likely to rise. cyberbullying has a bad effect on teenagers. severe cyberbullying can leave victims at greater risk for anxiety and depression. in some rare cases, some kids have even turned to suicide. the signs that a child is being cyberbullied vary, such as emotional distress(悲痛)during or after using the internet or the phone, avoidance of school or group gatherings, or slipping academic grades.if you discover that your child is being cyberbullied, talk to him or her about any experiences you have had in your childhood. this can help your child feel less alone. let your child know that its not his or her fault. reporting to teachers also may help. you can block the bully(欺人者)electronically as well. most devices have settings that allow you to electronically block emails, or text messages
