英语作文Two Educational PatternsIn the last decade, advances in educational reform have let to a hot debate over tow educational patternsthe exam-oriented and the quality-oriented. To answer the question which is superior, however, we should take the following factors into account. In general, exam-oriented educational gives priority to the scores of the students as well as the proportion of their entering schools of a high grade. Under this pattern, cramming method of teaching has found prevalence all over the schools. Contrast to the above, the quality-oriented education system provides to all the students opportunities to share equal education and they are supposed to enjoy all-round development actively rather than passively. In a word, what the educational pattern cultivates will not be merely elites in study, but citizens fit in health, rich in knowledge and tasteful in morality. To tell the truth, as a so-called elite produced by the traditional pattern of education, I believe that the quality-orientation is much superior to the old one. We ever squeezed into a narrow passage, shouldering too heavy pressure, enjoying no childhood. Strictly speaking, the exam-oriented education in itself bears no difference from the imperial examination system, which is root and branch out of tune with the modern melody. To my mind, knowledge can be sucked not only out of books but also from the lively society, to which the quality-orientation will build an expressway.Which Deserves PrioritySpeciality or Scores? When asked whether the student should be admitted by the university, some people, including college students say that if that happened, it would mean the destructs say that every student shares equal right in front of the Entrance Exam. Whats more, they argue that it doesnt accord with the nowadays-educational orientation, which puts great emphasis on students all-round development. However, those who are in fever of the admission argue that it is not scientific to assess a student only by means of his scores in the exam. In their eyes, students of specialities are rare and should enjoy some privilege, for if not, chances are a prospective elite in scientific research would be buried. In this case, history has taught us lessons. A good case in point is Wu Han, a well-known contemporary historian, whose scores in math were only 15 in a big exam.Considering the tug-of-war of the views on both sides, I would add weight to the latter. On the one hand, to open the door to talent differs from to those long for the admission lies in three aspects-morality, intelligence and physical fitness, not in school achievements alone, so to admit the student has little to do with the ruin of the educational policy; therefore talented students should be treated as such.Fast Economic GrowthGains or LossesThere is much discussion today about whether fast economic growth is desirable. And peoples views on it are varied. Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, and the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment. People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people. They maintain that only continue growth can create the capital need to improve the quality of life and provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization. There is certain some truth on both sides. Yet neither provides a satisfactory answer. To my mind, economic growth should meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, which holds the marrow of Sustainable Development. In China, both the economic development and the protection of natural resources need granting equal priority to. As such, sustainable development is the one-way route to follow.More Haste, Less SpeedThere is an old saying“more haste, less speed”. Its the experience of our forefathers; however, it is correct in many cases even today.Usually, if you act fast, you can reach your goal sooner. But it isnt always the case. If you emphasize only on speed but ignore the quality of your work, you will get the opposite effect. The more hasty you are, the slower you achieve completeness and success. In short, haste makes waste.Suppose that you are preparing for your final examination. There are a lot of exercise to do and many notes to remember. The fact that you have no enough time make you very worried. So you read and write continuously, without rest, without sleep, without relaxation. The result is that your brain is less and less efficient; your process is slower and slower. The situation goes from bad to worse. All your efforts lead to nothing. On the contrary if you do your preparations with a calculated plan and carry out the plan step by step, your work will be effective. Consequently, you will take part in the exams confidently with good preparations.Whatever you do, please remember the sayinghaste makes waste. If you understand it and apply it to your study or work, youll necessarily benefit a lot from it.Tour Fever Should Be Cooled DownTourism, as a new an expanding industry, is attracting more and more public attention. As a consequence, both arguments and counter-arguments concerning its development have emerged as time goes by. Economic benefits and increase in international understanding and friendship have always been two main arguments for tourism since its birth. Yet, Id like to focus my mind on its counteraction on social progress.First of all, the prosperity of tourism gives rise to the price fluctuation. And very often the price skyrocketing in the host regions is beyond the local peoples reach. As a consequence, their livings are worse off.Secondly, tourism sometimes leaves the local people psychologically unbalanced. Because it is usually people from better-off counties or regions that can afford to travel, their wealth only makes the hosts more aware of their own poverty. Again, owing to the language barrier, many tourists find it difficult to communicate with local people, to say nothing of mutual understanding.Thirdly, the exploitation of tourism is bound to destroy some natural resources and scenic areas. Environmental pollution is a case in point and its far-reaching harm is self-evident. It is true that every coin has tow sides, but taking into consideration as many things as we can, people may see clearly the side effects of tourism are much more than its blessings. Therefore, it is advisable to discourage rather than encourage tourism at the period when the worldwide economy has not got balanced development.Love Abuse in the Public Places公共场所爱情泛滥 There spreads a catchphrase among the youth nowadays that our society is becoming open for ones personality, so it is not uncommon that our eyes disobey us by catching young lovers kissing freely in the public places. When asked the reason for the behavior, they are most likely to say “we love to ”. True, no one could deny its nobility to express affection, for another person through a kiss, so long as it is in place, but out of place, it will become immoral in view of our national condition. Every nation has her own cultural tradition. The same can be side of china. Chinese people put great value on affections among them, yet the way to express feelings quite differs from that in western countries, where kissing is considered proper just as shaking hand in ours. To probe young peoples thought, perhaps the easy access to foreign cultures, to some extent, accelerates their blind swallow of the fresh living styles. However, they must neglect the truth that opening door to the outside world doesnt mean welcoming everything with exotic tastes. It is by no means a good thing for one to imitate something foreign to him and therefore couldnt make himself outstanding with dignity. In our eyes, love is private and should be treated as such. Everything that runs counter to the traditions should be considered immoral, no matter how much one may dislike to confess it. To put the wrong right, young people ought to learn not to be affected by vanity and to enable themselves to tell what is noble from the “imported” thinking and living styles. Perhaps when todays young people step into the middle age, looking back, they must be mocking at what they ever did.Reemployment of LaidOff Workers下岗职工再就业 Reemployment issue has emerged with large numbers of surplus laborers having been laid off. There is no doubt that it would lead to endless trouble if the surplus were not reorganized properly. In order to maintain the social stability and to secure peoples normal living standards, it is essential to work out solutions to the problem. To my mind, we may as well get down to the following approaches. Tertiary industry should be the first to stressed on, since it provides jobs without too many restrictions such as age , cultural back ground , gender differences and so on. Besides, we should set up various vocational training courses for laidoff workers option. A laidoff worker in one work unit is most likely to be competent in another field. In a word, to solve the problem is a twoway operation as far as governments and workers are concerned. On the one hand, governments at all levels should try every possible means to create a wide range of employment options open to laidoff workers; on the other hand, laidoff workers ought not to sit idle and wait for opportunities to come. So long as they dont lose heart and constantly to become stronger, they must have a bright future.A Letter to the university President about the University LibraryMay 27th ,2003Dear Mr. President: I am Li Ming, a junior student from the Department of Accounting. I am sorry to occupy your precious time, but I really want to talk about the university library. Our library seems to be getting worse ever since last semester. The books are so limited that they remain unchanged year after year. To make matters worse, the environment is becoming more than worrying at the moment. It is true that we large reading-rooms, but it is neither clean nor bright. It seems to us that no one ever wants to clean up the rubbish or repair the broken lights. The service is also far from satisfactory. The librarians are so indifferent and cold that they would rather stand still than help us readers. It seems to me that all they have to do is reading newspapers and chatting with e4ach other. The library is vital to the education of every student on campus. The deteriorating environment and unsatisfactory service have aroused concern from all the students. I hope you can help to put an end to this situation and restore our confidence in our university library.I am looking forward to your reply.Best regards.Sincerely yours,Li MingDuring the period between 1998 and 2002, pirated software users declined abruptly from 3,000 to 1,000, while authorized users increased sharply from 2,000 to more than 8,000.Several reasons can account for this phenomenon. Compared with pirated software, authorized software can guarantee both high quality and good after-sale service. Apart from that, authorized software are becoming cheaper and cheaper -more and more people can afford them as a result. However there are still a number of people who buy pirated software, generally for two reasons. On the one hand they take it for granted that pirated produces are cheaper than authorized ones. On the other hand, they dont realize that their behavior will do great harm to the whole software industry and national economy. Campus Cries out for Morl Education On campus, compared with intellectual education, which has been put great value on, moral education seems much less important. As such, for a long time people have witnessed the joy that Students feel from pursuing knowledge. Nevertheless, a student with a profound book learning does not necessarily mean he also has lived up to the moral standards necessary to meet the needs of the times. Moreover, recent years have seen many college students who have failed to resist to the temptation to place more emphasis on material comfort above shaping moral character and acquiring knowledge. Take students going business for example. Some of them have learnt to make money by foul means. Another case in point is that some girl students would rather take any risk of following with so-called “Dakuan”, who may own nothing but a fortune. If such behaviors continuing, the pure Ivory Tower may well lose its reputation and throw itself into the public gossip. The decline of moral standards in some of todays students and the blunt sense of moral education have evoked much worrying from people of insight, they think that the room should be made for moral education in the curriculum to cultivate students in an all-round wayintellectually, physically and morally.Teacher-student relationshipA good teacher-student relationship is able to effectively further the student to a higher level in study. The teacher with patience and understanding encourages the student instead of pushing or forcing him. The relationship of this sort makes learning so enjoyable and funny that the student would work hard willingly. However, a bad relationship seriously weakens the achievement of teaching. It discourages the student from learning, leaving him with a wrong and negative attitude towards studying. Thus, teaching also becomes an unpleasant task, which forms a vicious cycle. As I see it, the relationship between a teacher and a student should be attached much importance to. A good relationship makes the teachers job worthwhile while a bad one ill-affects the students development, even to the rest of his life.WasteEvery day we can see waste of all kinds around us. Let us have one example, many of the classrooms with nobody studying in are often lit brightly during daytime. Let us take another example, clean water jets out from the spoiled taps for days, even weeks before they are repaired. Let us take still another instance, may delicate instruments and machines become rusted or out of use because of careless maintenance. In an industrial society, some economists have argued that waste may help to stimulate production. This may be true so far as capitalist countries are concerned. What the bosses and the landlords aim at is noting but making more money. It is quite clear that they never care about the natural resources of their countries and the poverty of workers and farmers.Saving is a virtue, especially in modern time. Saving may be regarded as a form of raising production. To speed up the economic construction of a country, man should not only work harder than ever, but save the natural resources by fair means.Campus loveCampus love isnt a newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly against it while some others think its natural. I dont advocate it. The reasons are as follows.First of all, undergraduate are neither fully psychologically mature nor able to assume the responsibility, especially freshman and sophomores. Second, they may indulge in it, thus dilapidate their study, which isnt rare. Third, some just take advantage of it to kill time, avoid boredom with much time at their own disposal, have someone keep company, etc. whats more, some change dating “partners” frequently, holding a paradox opinion that they could shoe off their charm or accumulate experience, but more often than not, they leave a bad impression, such as lacking the sense of responsibility, on others, especially their former sweethearts. Last, the proportion of successful couples is too low. The overwhelming majority reach the same end-parting just before graduation, forced by reality, etc.So, look before you leap, discard campus love and make a wiser decision after graduation.ine the band 4 test was initiated several years ago, it has displayed its superiority in many aspects. With a clear, definite objective in mind, ss have worried harder than before. In order to pass the test, , many ss work late into the night, or even until small hours in the morning. teachers , of course, also contribute their share by improving their teaching methods, showing more concern for less advanced ss, etc. However, the test is not without its problems. At least three serious drawbacks can be readily identified. First, since the English composition accounts for only 15% of the total mark, this is not enough to motivate ss to invest enough time in writing practice. Second, as oral proficiency is not measured by the test mss and ts tend to ignore oral practice in class. Third, some ss do not continue their English studies after they have passed the test.To solve the problems, it is necessary to increase the proportion of writing in the test. The new test forms like dictation and short answer qs which test writing skills to a certain extent are helpful. Oral tests can be organized by each university itself. Through such efforts ss will learn English in a more balanced way.It is evident that life is inseparable from water. Really, you cannot imagine what will happen to you if you do not take in any water for a single summer day. In fact, water makes up a considerable part of your weight and it helps you survive just as it does plants and animals.Sometimes, water can be harmful or even destructive. For instance, you will have some trouble to do outdoor work if it rains for days. Plants such as cotton will suffer a lot if it rains too much. And a flood is
