2014届高三英语二轮复习专题突破精品训练:阅读理解a a child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. it is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.a charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. to prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. as to fears, there are, i think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. often, however, this arises (出现) from the child having heard the story once. familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.there are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. i find such people, i must say so peculiar (奇怪的) that i do not know how to argue with them. if their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from new york to philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.no fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.1. the author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is _.a. repeated without any change b. treated as a jokec. made some changes by the parent d. set in the present答案解析:答案为c。 由第一段的 “it is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.” 2. according to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _.a. in a realistic setting b. heard for the first timec. repeated too often d. told in a different way答案解析:答案为b。 由第二段 “as to fears, there are, i think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once.” 3.the advantage claimed (提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _.a. makes them less fearfulb. develops their power of memoryc. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid ofd. encourages them not to have strange beliefs答案解析:答案为a。 由第二段的最后一句话 “familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.” 4. the authors mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that _.a. fairy stories are still being made upb. there is some misunderstanding about fairy talesc. people try to modernize old fairy storiesd. there is more concern for childrens fears nowadays答案解析:答案为b。 从第三段 “if their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from new york to philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.” 和第四段 “no fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.” 5. one of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _.a. they are full of imaginationb. they just make up the stories which are far from the truthc. they are not interestingd. they make teachers of history difficult to teach答案解析:答案为b。 从第三段的首句 “there are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist”可知,也有人反对神话故事是因为它们不是客观真实的,故答案为b。解答此题同样要注意同义句的转换, “not in favor of”与object to 同义;”not objectively true” 与 “far from the truth”同义。bwith the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the united states today is the death penalty (死刑). many argue that it is an effective deterrent (威慑) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders.the argument advanced by those opposed (反对) to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is tile mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime (罪行) anyway.in our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. but some are more dangerous than others.for example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher. thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. while it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. but the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. for example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in california, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100, 000 population. since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to10.4 murders for each 100, 000 population. the sharp climb in the states murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. it certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. if the law about death penalty is vetoed (否决), some people will be murdered- some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. this is really a life or death matter. the lives of thousands of people must be protected.1. the main purpose of this passage is to _.a. speak for the majority b. support a vetoc. speak ill of the government d. argue for the value of the death penalty答案解析:答案为d。 由第一段的 “many argue that , while others think .”和最后一段的首句 “the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion.” 2. which of the following is among the heated arguments across the usa besides death penalty?a. air pollution. b. the war against iraq.c. equal rights. d. election of president. 从第一段的首句 “with the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the united states today is the death penalty (死刑).” 3. the numbers in the last paragraph show that _.a. if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reducedb. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963c. the population of california has risend. death penalty is of little value答案解析:答案为a。 从最后一段的第二句 “but the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them.” 和最后三句 “if the law about death penalty is vetoed (否决), some people will be murdered- some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. this is really a life or death matter. the lives of thousands of people must be protected.” 由本段的第四句话 “for example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in california” 可知,1954年到1963年期间,死刑时不时地在california执行,并不是废除了,故选项b错误。 4. it can be inferred that the writer thinks that _.a. the death penalty is the most important problem in the united states todayb. the second type of murderers (in paragraph 4) should be sentenced to deathc. the veto of the law about death penalty is of little importanced. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed答案解析:答案为b。 细读第四段, 由“it is one thing blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan in the style of a butcher. thus, murder is a matter of different degree. while it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.” 从最后一段倒数第三句话 “if the law about death penalty is vetoed, some people will be murdered- some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect.” d选项与最后一段的首句 “the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion.” redheaded birthday boy jake balcom, newly 11, walked into the principals office at centennial lane elementary school in ellicott city ready for his big surprise. his name had been announced over the loudspeaker moments earlier. today was going to be special.back in the daylike, before fifth grade jakes parents would bring cupcakes to school in his honor. but this year, for the first time, his howard county school has forbidden parents from bringing “edible treats” for students birthdays. that means no more cupcakes, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, birthday cake, ice cream, rice krispies treats or pizza. instead, jake got a handshake from principal robert bruce and a colorful pencil and a card.“we hope that you have a terrific birthday,” the card read.jake just smiled, and went back to class.centennial lane is part of a movement across the washington area and the country to take the battle against childhood obesity to one of educations most beloved functions: the school party. but some are worried that the fight is going one step too farand taking some of the fun out of being a kid.schools, where many children eat two of their days meals, are being pushed to the front lines of the battle against kiddy bulge. a federal law requires schools to create wellness policies that encourage students to be more active and eat more healthfully. some schools in virginia have started exercise clubs. in maryland, schools are cracking down on vending-machine junk food.according to the centers for disease control and prevention (cdcp), the proportion of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has skyrocketed in recent decades, from 7 percent in 1980 to 16 percent in 2002. among 12 to 19-year-olds, the rate of obesity more than tripled, from 5 percent to 16 percent. health officials have called obesity a pandemic (流行病).at centennial lane, the principal said some parents have complained about the schools new policy, and others have adapted by bringing in nonfood treatssuch as rulers or erasers.jake balcom said he missed bringing treats to school. but he wasnt too bothered by their absence because he had celebrated his birthday with friends. they went to see the movie “wallace & gromit: the curse of the were-rabbit” and shared his birthday cake at his house.1. what is jake balcoms reaction to his gifts for his 11-year-old birthday from his school ? a. he felt puzzled by the gifts quite different from the former ones. b. he almost felt the same as before because he had celebrated his birthday with friends. c. he preferred chocolate chip cookies, birthday cake, ice cream than pencils and cards. d. he would rather have a birthday party than a handshake from the principal. 由第四段 “jake just smiled, and went back to class.”和最后一段 “but he wasnt too bothered by their absence because he had celebrated his birthday with friends.” 2. the underlined phrase “kiddy bulge” (in paragraph 6 ) means “_”. a. parents gifts b. childrnes parties c. kids overweight d. childrens exercises 答案解析:答案为c。 结合该词所在的下文 “that encourage students to be more active and eat more healthfully. some schools in virginia have started exercise clubs. in maryland, schools are cracking down on vending-machine junk food.” 和下一段的首句 “the proportion of overweight children ages 6 to 11 .” 3. which of the following is ture according to the passage?a. parents all agree that the fight against childhood obesity is going too far. b.according to cdcp, the proportion of overweight children has had a tendency of increasing. c. for this years halloween party, kids can enjoy what they like as usual. d. jake balcom is a primary school pupil in fourth grade. 由倒数第三段的数据 “from 7 percent in 1980 to 16 percent in 2002. among 12 to 19-year-olds, the rate of obesity more than tripled, from 5 percent to 16 percent.” 由第五段 “ to take the battle against childhood obesity to one of educations most beloved functions: the school party. but some are worried that the fight is going one step too farand taking some of the fun out of being a kid.” 由第二段 “that means no more cupcakes, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, birthday cake, ice cream, rice krispies treats or pizza. instead, jake got a handshake from principal robert bruce and a colorful pencil and a card.” 由第二段首句 “back in the daylike, before fifth grade jakes parents would bring cupcakes to school in his honor.” 4. which of the following is the measure taken by the centennial lane elementary school? a. starting exercise clubs. b. cracking down on vending-machine junk food. c. forbidding parents from taking the food to the school. d. taking all the fun out of being a kid. 由第二段 “has forbidden parents from bringing “edible treats” for students birthdays.” 和第五段 “centennial lane is part of a movement ”可知,c选项正确。由第六段 “some schools in virginia have started exercise clubs. in maryland, schools are cracking down on vending-machine junk food.” 第五段最后一句话提到 “but some are worried that the fight is going one step too farand taking some of the fun out of being a kid.” ba popular saying goes, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” however, thats not really true. words have the power to build us up or tear us down. it doesnt matter if the words come from someone elses or ourselves - the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. we all talk to ourselves sometimes. were usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. in fact, we really shouldnt be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.this “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. so in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. we should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. the next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “good job!”often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. but we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. for example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. and the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.words possess power because of their lasting effect. many of us regret something we once said. and we remember unkind words said to us! before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: is it loving? is it needed? if what we want to say doesnt pass this test, then its better left unsaid.words possess power: both positive and negative. those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. we can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. negative words destroy all those things. will we use our words to hurt or to heal? the choice is ours.1. the main idea of the first paragraph is that _.a. words have a lasting effect on us b. not sticks and
