My marks in school were miserable and, the thing was, I didnt know enough to really care. My older brother and I lived with Mom in a dark multi-family house in Detroit. We watched TV every night. But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV. Our mother had only been able to get through third grade. But she was much brighter and smarter than we boys knew at the time. She had noticed something in the suburban houses she cleaned books. So she came home one day, snapped off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to read two books every week,” she said. “And youre going to write me a report on what you read.”We complained about how unfair it was. Besides, we didnt have any books in the house. But she explained that we would go to the library.”So pretty soon there were these two angry boys sitting in her old car on their way to Detroit Public Library. I wandered reluctantly among the childrens books. I loved animals, so when I saw some books that seemed to be about animals, I started leafing through them. The first book I read was about beavers. For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. The experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. Soon I began to look forward to visiting other worlds. I moved from animals to plants, and then to rocks. Between the covers of all those books were whole worlds, and I was free to go anywhere in them. Along the way a funny thing happened: I started to know things. Teachers started to notice it too. I got to the point where I couldnt wait to get home to my books. Now my older brother is an engineer and I am chief of a hospital. Sometimes I still cant believe my lifes journey, from failing and indifferent student in a Detroit public school to this position, which takes me all over the world to teach and preform critical surgery. But I know when the journey began the day Mom snapped off the TV set and put us in her car for the drive to the library.56.We can learn from the beginning of the passage that _.A.The author and his mother had done poorly in schoolB.The author had been very concerned about his school workC.The author had spent much time watching TV after schoolD.The author had realized how important schooling was.57.The mother was _ to make her two sons switch to reading books.A.hesitantB. unpreparedC. reluctantD. determined58.The author began to love books for the following reasons EXCEPT that _.A.he could go back to read the books againB.he could visualize what he read in mindC.he discovered another world in his lifeD.he realized that books offered him new experienceBCreating Life in A LabThe science world experienced a watershed moment last week that may finally lead to answers to lifes big questions: Why are we here, and is there a God?On May 20, in the pages of Science, scientist and billionaire Dr.Vraig Venter reported the creation the worlds first synthetic (合成) life form.Venter has artificially created a new cell that lives and reproduces naturally. To do this, he mapped the DNA sequence of a genome and then injected it into a cell to live and reproduce. “Its the first self-replicating cell on the planet,” said Venter. The discovery, which took 20 scientists more than 10 years and $40 million (273 million yuan) to achieve, is significant because it confirms the importance of our DNA code. It proves the DNA code is the basis of life.Philosophers and bioethicists are similarly complimenting the breakthrough. “Venter is opening the most profound door in humanitys history He is going toward the role of a god: creating artificial life that could never have existed naturally,” Julian Savulescu, professor of practical ethics at Oxford University, told the UKs Times. But some groups do not share this excitement. Eric Hoffman from Friends of the Earth believes strong regulation should be put in place to protect the environment from any artificial products. Meanwhile, security experts believe it could create a new era of artificial biological weapons. But answering big, meaning-of-life questions is not the purpose of the groundbreaking research. Venters synthetic cell could be used to create revolutionary vaccines, biofuels and prescription drugs.Venter has received funding from the oil company to look at ways to develop a range of fuels that do not produce carbon emissions.Making the discovery even more flashy is the reputation of Venter. Starting his career as a medic in the Vietnam War, Venter came to prominence(突出) in the 1990s. He attracted controversy as the “Bad Boy of Biology” going head-to-head with the US and UK governments in a race to map the human genome.A decade later and Venters rock star reputation is taking a back seat to his most recent work.59.The new cell Venter created _.A.is produced by the scientist aloneB. can self-reproduce naturallyC.gives the answer to lifes big questionsD. is used to protect environment60.The worry from some scientists about the new cell lies in _.A.creating new life on the earthB. inventing some medicinesC.producing biological weaponsD. researching the origin of human being61._ has helped Venters discovery attract evenmore attention from people.A.Scientists cooperationB. Long time devoted to the researchC.The splendid after-usage D. Reputation of Venter62.The authors attitude towards the discovery is _.A.objectiveB. negativeC.positiveD. skepticalCWEDNESDAY, April 4 (Health Day News) Really, really liking yourself may give you the edge in your next job interview, a new study suggests.Thats because narcissists, known to be extremely high on self-esteem, are better able to talk about and promote themselves, which projects confidence and expertise to interviewers, University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers explained. In their two-part study, narcissists scored much higher in a simulated job interview than equally qualified non-narcissists.This is one setting where its OK to say nice things about yourself and there is no disapproval. In fact, its expected, study co-author Peter Harms, an assistant professor of management, said in a university news release. Simply put, those who are comfortable doing this tend to do much better than those who arent. The study, which appears in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, first involved 72 people being videotaped as job applicants. While non-narcissistic people eased up on their self-promotion when challenged by expert interviewers, the narcissists actually increased their attempts to promote themselves, the researchers found. In the second part of the study, 222 expert interviewers rated videos of applicants with similar job skills and varying degrees of narcissism. The self-promoters - those who spoke quickly and at length and used such ingratiation(虚情假意,逢迎) strategies as smiling, gesturing and complimenting others received far more positive evaluations than equally qualified applicants who choose to be modest, the researchers reported. This shows that what is getting narcissists the win is the delivery, Harms said. These results show just how hard it is to effectively interview, and how fallible we can be when making interview judgments. We dont necessarily want to hire narcissists, but might end up doing so because they come off as being self-confident and capable. The findings also suggest that interviewers need to be aware of the strategies used by narcissists, Harms said.On the whole, we find very little evidence that narcissists are more or less effective workers. But what we do know is that they can be very destructive when dealing with other people on a regular basis, he said. And, he added, If everything else is equal, it probably is best to avoid hiring them. 63. We can learn from the passage that narcissists tend to_.A. be more qualified for a jobB. show talent in leading a groupC. be confident in their abilityD. win every interview they go to64. According to the researcher, it is true that_.A. narcissists usually get more chances to be hiredB. narcissists never fail to impress the interviewersC. narcissists are generally more effective workersD. narcissists do more harm than good to their jobs65. The underlined phrase “eased up” in the 5th paragraph probably means_.A. hide B. decrease C. display D. demonstrate66. The interviewers might end up hiring a narcissist because_.A. narcissists are usually creative and aggressiveB. narcissists have more tactics than modest peopleC. narcissists are good at hiding his/her intentionD. narcissists tend to leave positive impressionsDParents are often upset when their children praise the homes of their friends and regard it as a slur(诋毁) on their own cooking, or cleaning, or furniture, and often are foolish enough to let the adolescents see that they are annoyed. They may even accuse them of disloyalty, or make some spiteful remark about the friends parents. Such a loss of dignity and descent into childish behavior on the part of the adults deeply shocks the adolescents, and makes them resolve that in future they will not talk to their parents about the place or people they visit. Before very long the parents will
