hundred people came to a small room in geneva,switzerland there were presidents and kings, film stars and millionaires they came from the four corners of the world, east and west,north and south,and they spoke many languagesbut they all wanted one thingto buy some jewelleryit was the jewellery that a man called edward gave a woman called wallisone woman,mrs namiki from japan,paid $105000 for a gold ringwhy did you pay all that money?a friend askedyou can buy a gold ring in tokyo for half that moneybecause wallis and edward were special to me,mrs namiki replied i never met them but ill keep that ring all my lifein the next few hours, in that small room in geneva, the jewellery was sold for50000000 but who was wallis? and who was edward? and why was their love story so special?lets begin at the beginning1 a lonely childprince edward was born in 1894his father,king george v, was a tall, cold man who did not like childrenwhy does edward talk all the time?he once saidhes a very noisy child!his mother,queen mary, agreedit doesnt matter if edward is happy or unhappy, she saida child must be silent and strongthe family lived in buckingham palace,which had 600 roomsthere were 8 kitchens,19 bathrooms,24 toilets, 11 dining rooms, 17 bedrooms and 21 sitting roomsedward once told a story about the house :buckingham palace was very big, and people sometimes got lostone night my mother,my father and i were sitting in the dining roomwe were waiting for our dinnerwe waited and waited, but the food did not comeafter twenty minutes my father was very angry he stood up and went to the kitchenwhere is the cook?he shouted,and where is my food?but, sir, the cook replied,your dinner left the kitchen fifteen minutes agohasnt it arrived yet?no,it hasnt,my father shouted, and im hungrythe king left the kitchen and began to look for the foodten minutes later he saw a woman who was carrying three plates of meat and potatoeswhat happened to you?my father saidwhy didnt you bring us our dinner?i m sorry, sir, the woman replied there are a lot of dining rooms i couldnt remember where to gobut if you return to the table, sir, this time i can follow you to the right roomedward did not go to school with other children he stayed in buckingham palace where he had a special classroom just for himthis is how edward described his lessons:my teacher, mr hansell, was a thin man he never smiled and his nose was very redwe had lots of books but they were all very boring they were full of words and they didnt have any picturessometimes i stopped reading and looked out doormr. hansell got very angryhe took a stick and hit me on the armdont look out of the window,little boy, he shoutedlook at the bookhe hit me many times and my arm was redevery friday the teacher took me to my fathers roomand what has my son learnt this week,mr. hansell?the king askedand the answer was always:not very much im afraid,siredward doesnt like his lessons he never listens to what i saywhen mr hansell left the room,my father was angry with mewhats wrong with you, child?he saidare you stupid? why cant you learn anything?but the lessons are so boring, sir,i repliedand mr hansell hits mei dont understand you,edwardyoure a babyyoure so weakyoull never be a good king a king must be stronggo to your room and stay there until the morningi spent many days alone in my room,edward wrote lateri never played with other children and i didnt have any friends i lived in the most beautiful house in england but i was always lonely and sad i saw my mother once a day at dinner time and i saw my father three or four times a week,but they never gave me any lovei was afraid of them and everything i did was wrong2 the prince of walesin the spring of 1911 king george called edward into his room and said:next month ill make you prince of wales and these are your clothes for the ceremonythe king opened a small cupboard and edward started to crybut father,he said,im sixteen years old nowi cant wear soft shoes and a skirt ill look like a girl why cant i dress like other people?because youre different and special,his father replied,and one day youll be kingedward cried for the next two days, but there was nothing he could doand so, on 10th june 1911, the family drove to caernarvon castle in north wales and the ceremony beganthe king put a small gold crown on edwards headthere was music and dancing and the crowd began to shoutthe new prince of wales closed his eyesi feel terrible, he saidcan we go home now?not yet, the king repliedthe people want to see youedward walked to the front of the castle and looked down at the crowdhe was shaking and his face was redsmile, edward,the king saidyou are happy!a few hours later the family were driving back to windsorwasnt that a lovely day!queen mary saidedward took off his shoes and looked out of the windownever again,he thought never again!3 the royal starafter a year at oxford university, edward went to fight in the first world warhe wrote:i lived in a house with twenty-five other soldiers at night we talked about our lives and our familiesit was very interestingi could speak freely to different people-rich and poor,young and old but i also saw the blood and noise of warone day in 1916 my driver took me to the town of loos in belgiumi got out of the car and walked to the top of the hilldown below me there was heavy fighting and i felt very sadan hour later i returned to my carill never forget what i sawmy driver was dead while i was away,somebody shot him in the neckwhen the war finished in 1918, edward returned to buckingham palace one night he was talking to his father in the dining roomi dont understand why countries fight,the prince saidthe war has finished, but nothing has changedthere are still millions of poor and hungry people its not rightsomebody must do something!well,king george replied,you cant change the world if you sit by the fire you must travelmeet peopletalk to themlisten to what they say and then, when you are king, you can make the world a better placeand so,in 1920,edward left england again during the next five years he travelled 240 000 kilometres and visited 45 different countrieshe saw india, argentina, nigeria, mexico, new zealand, germany, and japanwhen he came to toronto,in canada, there were 500 000 people in the streets to meet himeverywhere thousands of people waited to see himthere were crowds of 190 000 in cape town, 300 000 in paris, 500 000 in new york, and 750 000 in melbourneedward is the first royal star,one newspaper wrote,and he is now the most famous man in the worldin the old days princes were cold and boredbut edward is different he gets out of his car and walks down the street every two or three minutes he stops and speaks with the crowdhe laughshe smiles he shakes a thousand hands he is a man of the people with a heart of gold4 the meetingin the autumn of 1930 edward went to stay with his friends lord and lady furnessthis is how he described that weekend in a book called a kings story:on saturday the weather was cold and windyit was raining heavily so we could not ride our horses we decided to stay in the house and have an early lunch with some of lady furness friendsat one oclock wallis arrived with her husband she was beautifully dressed and she smiled all the timeshe spoke with lord furness for a few minutes,and then lady furness brought her over to see mesir,i would like you to meet one of my dearest and sweetest american friends,mrs wallis simpsonhow do you do, mrs simpson,i saidplease come and sit downlady furness left us and we began to talki could see that wallis was not felling very wellshe had a bad cold and her eyes were red im afraid that our english houses arent very warm,i said we dont have american central heating herethere was a long silencemrs simpson turned her face and looked out of the windowthen she said:you have disappointed me,sirand why is that?i askedbecause everybody asks me about american central heatingi thought that the prince of wales would talk about something more interestingi began to laughwhats the matter,sir?wallis askedhave i said something wrong?no,i repliedim laughing because you didnt lie to meyou told me the truthbut why is that funny? doesnt everybody do that?one day ill be king of england, i repliedand people are afraid of meif i say that the sky is yellow, they say,“yes,sir,you are right” if i say that wednesday is the first day of the week, they say,“yes,sir,you are right” and if i say that scotland is bigger than canada,they say, “yes,sir,you are right”but you told me that i was boring! you told me the truthi like that!there was another silence and then wallis began to laughcan i say one more thing,sir?yes, mrs simpson,what is it?its your trousers,sirmy trousers?yes, sirthey are black and your shoes are brownthese two colours dont look right togetheri stood up and looked in the mirroryes,mrs simpson,youre righti look very strangethe next time we meet,i will be better dressedwhen lunch was ready,we walked through into the dining roomi sat at one end of the table and wallis sat at the other endi was watching her very carefullyi thought how beautiful her hands wereshe began talking to lady furness and then, a few minutes later, she turned and smiled at mei felt very happyafter lunch wallis came over to say goodbyemy husband and i have to leave now,sirwere going to another party in londoni wanted to speak to her but i could not find the right wordsi dont know why we shook hands and wallis walked awayi went into the next room and sat down near lady furnesstell me about mrs simpson,i saidwhat would you like to know?she askedeverything! i saidthen perhaps,sir,you would like to walk in the gardenwe can talk more freely therewe stood up and left the house by the back doorwe walked slowly through the trees,and lady furness told me about wallis5 wallisthis is how lady furness described mrs simpsons early life to edward:wallis was born in baltimoreshe never knew her fatherhe died when she was five months old but her mother was a strong and loving woman, and wallis was a happy childwhen she was twenty,she married a man called winfield spencerfor the first few years they were happy together but one day winfield lost some money in the streethe was very angry when he came home, he took a bottle of whisky from a cupbodrd and began to drinkthat night he hit wallis in the mouth she screamed and he hit her againthere was blood on her face and she was shaking like a leaf please, winfield,she saidno morebut winfield took her arm and pulled her up the stairsyoure my prisoner,he shouted at her,and youre not going to leavethen he pushed her into the bathroom and locked the doorthe next morning wallis went back to her familyi cant stay with him,she saidi want a divorcepoor wallis,edward saidbut what happened next,lady furness?well,said lady furness,a few months later she met a fine man called ernest simpson hes quiet, but interestingthey got married and they now live in a beautiful flat in the centre of londonand are they happy?asked edwardlady furness looked at the prince and smiledi dont know,sir,she saidi don t knowduring the next two years the prince saw wallis once or twice a weekthey had the same friends, and they often met at partiesmrs simpson knew a lot about life,edward once saidshe loved books, food, people, and travel she was very beautiful and her eyes were full of fire she was friendly and easy to talk to and,after a while,i opened up my heart we had no secretsi told her everythingand thats how it all beganhis eyes were always sad,wallis said about edwardand sometimes he looked like a child so young, so quiet, so weak he had no real friends perhaps people were a little afraid of him but he was a warm and kind man when he talked to me, i felt my heart jumpi wanted to be alone with him, but i knew that wasnt possibledid the prince love me in those early days? no,i dont think sobut each time we met,we just felt closer and closerin june 1933 edward gave a birthday party for wallis,and during the next few months he visited the simpsons flat in london almost every dayone evening, the prince asked wallis and ernest to go skiing in austriaim sorry, sir,mr simpson repliedi have to go to america on businessbut perhaps wallis and her aunt can come with youwe went to kitzbhl as friends,wallis wrote later,but when we came home, we were in love and a few months later the prince asked me to marry him it was just like a dream!6 the king is dead!long live the king!in january 1936 edward went to windsor for a few weeks he was tired of town life and he wanted to work in his garden and ride his horsesbut then,one afternoon,there was a phone call from queen maryedward,she said,you must come back im-mediately your father is very ill and i think hes going to diewhen edward arrived, he went straight to his fathers roomhe walked to the side of the bed and kissed his fathers white face the king opened his eyes and smiledthen he took his sons hand and said:be a good king,edwardand be good to your motheryes,father, i willthe king closed his eyes and did not speak again just after midnight he diedthen queen mary took edwards hand and kissed itmy child, you are now king,she said softlygod be with youhis three brothers came to him, one by one, and they each kissed his handthe king is deadlong live the king,they saidat one oclock edward left the room to telephone wallis“my father is dead,he saidim so sorry, siri must stay here for a while,edward went onbut ill phone you at the weekendnothing will change between you and mei love you more than ever,and you will be my queenlets not talk about that now,wallis repliedyou must go back to your familybut you are my family, wallis you are everything to megoodnightsleep wellwhen wallis put the phone down that night, she sudden-ly felt afraidedward is now king,she thought,but what will happen to me?7 the churchin the spring of 1936,mrs simpson wrote a letter to her husbanddear ernest,she wroteyou have been very kind to meyou are a good and strong manbut i must tell you that our marriage is finishedi am in love with the king and i want a divorcedont be angrythere is nothing you can doill never forget you, but i have to be freeernest replied immediately:your letter arrived this morning i will do what you ask, but ill never stop loving youand if you need me,ill always be herethat night the king and wallis met at a small restaurant in piccadilly edward read ernests letter again and againthats wonderful news,he saidnothing can stop us now!the next day, when edward came down to breakfast,gordon lang, the archbishop of canterbury,was waiting for himgood morning, gordon,the king saidhow nice to see you again and what can i do for you?for a minute the archbishop said nothing then he opened a small black bag and took out three newspapersi have come to see you about mrs wallis simpsonn,he beganthe newspapers say that you want to marry her are these stories true,sir?yes,gordon, wallis is going to be my wifebut thats not possible,the archbishop repliedyou know what the church thinks
